Chippa mark top-flight return with a win

Chippa United marked their return to the Absa Premiership with a 2-0 win over Platinum Stars at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium on Saturday evening.

First-half goals from Andile Mbenyane and David Zulu secured all three points for the Chilli Boys, who move to the top of the log table on goal difference.

As for Dikwena, the result is a disappointing comedown, after their impressive win over league champions Mamelodi Sundowns in the MTN8 quarterfinals last weekend.

Good game. Feisty too - 7 yellow cards and a red.
Chippa played really well, the crowd was small, probably 7 000, hopefully it picks up as the season progresses. The groundstaff did brilliantly though, less than 24 hours after the rugby, and the surface looked great.

Round 1 results:

Sundowns 1-1 Maritzburg
FS Stars 0-1 Chiefs
Tuks 0-1 Polokwane
Chippa 2-0 Platinum Stars
Pirates 1-2 Swallows
SSU 0-1 Wits
Celtic 1-1 Black Aces
Amazulu 0-0 Ajax

Mid-week fixtures:

Tuesday
19:30 SuperSport United vs Chippa United Lucas Moripe Stadium
19:30 Wits vs Tuks Bidvest Stadium (SS4)

Wednesday
19:30 Moroka Swallows vs Amazulu Dobsonville Stadium (SABC1)
19:30 Ajax CT vs Mamelodi SUndowns Cape Town Stadium
19:30 Platinum Stars vs Free State Stars Royal Bafokeng Stadium
19:30 Bloemfontein Celtic vs Orlando Piartes Free State Stadium (SS10)
19:30 Mpumalanaga Black Aces vs Kaizer Chiefs Mbombela Stadium (SS4)
19:30 Maritzburg United vs Polokwane City Harry Gwala Stadium

Big news from SuperSport, the PSL will now have a youth league. Some speakers call it an u19 league others an u20 one. Either way it is still good. Details still coming through as the broadcast progresses.

The Chiefs/Aces game was very exciting to watch. It was end to end stuff and both teams impressively kept up this tempo from the first to the last whistle. Was good watch instead of the usual lethargic affairs we tend to witness more so what happened to Chiefs in the run-in last season when they effectively handed Downs the title.

After the international week, there was a full round of fixtures:

Moroka Swallows 0 - 2 Chippa United
Bloem Celtic 0 - 1 Mamelodi Sundowns
Ajax Cape Town 2 - 1 Free State Stars
Orlando Pirates 1 - 0 Wits
SuperSport United 3 - 1 Platinum Stars
Polokwane City 2 - 2 AmaZulu
Maritzburg Utd 0 - 0 Black Aces
Kaizer Chiefs 2 - 1 University of Pretoria

Chiefs stay top with a prefect 18 points from 6 games. Ajax are second with 14 and Pirates third with 11.

In true PSL fashion, there are no league games this week, due to the MTN 8 final on Saturday. The league resumes on 26th.
