The 80's

The death of LM Radio.

Gather round children. A long time ago, in the days of the dinosaurs when 8-track tapes were on the cutting edge of technology, I was doing my military service at the time of the Frelimo take-over in Mozambique. We were choppered-in to the Kruger National Park to prevent any of the Mozambique fracas from spilling over into SA (the SA/Mos. border is there). LM radio (in Mozambique) was a popular music station. We were so close that reception was outstanding. Over the radio you could hear someone pleading for SA assistance. Then the door burst open. Machine gun fire. Silence. Then a Frelimo broadcast – no cause for panic, everything was under control.

I was appalled. I asked my mom (when I got back) if she had heard it. Apparently not. It must have been only a short-range broadcast. No one else in SA had heard anything untoward on LM radio.
Lorenco Marques (LM) was renamed Maputo. LM radio and a good music station died back in the day.

90's was the music era for me...
however i do still sing jenny jenny 8675309 and we can dance if we want to, we can leave our friends behind!!!

You have a number of artists from the 70's in that list

Yeah, and some are even from the 60's !!! It's that they still released songs in the 80's... check those same lists for their songs in the 80's. :D (and 90's and 21st century!!!)

Going to fire off a few personal nostalgic classics if I may :)

Lest we not forget Yazoo. Upstairs at Eric's (1982) and You and Me Both (1983) were excellent albums. Vince Clarke and Alison Moyet were brilliant!

All cried out by Alison Moyet is an awesome song.

Heehee.

The thread title brought to mind Jack Parow's song, "I miss" - check it out if you haven't heard it already :D

Maybe I'm just old and feeling nostalgic but those were the days.

I love the music but the music videos from that era really kick ass, you don;t see that schit anymore.

I think it's time to start a 80's music thread ;) What do the rest of you think?

The 80's were magical. Best ever time to grow up :)

Nice thread – I often wondered what it would have been like to have grown up in the 60’s, but I didn’t mind the 80’s at all. I enjoyed the music from the 70’s through to the 90’s, but must admit it went a bit pear shaped for me after that.

I remember:

Watching e-void and others at the ( Ottery I think) Hypermarket parking lot

Barny Simon at the Doors in JHB

Dancing at midnight to “just cant get enough” at (s)limelight in Pretoria

Staying up to listen to the Rock Professor ( Oom Chris, how I miss your show!) Saying I learnt a lot from him would be a major understatement.

Visiting Rocky Street in it’s hey-day, in Yeoville

Bumping away at Bella’s in Hillbrow, and eating disgusting boerewors rolls on the pavement at 4am

The exhilaration & apprehension when visiting that “alternative” club in Woodstock – anyone remember the name, was it the Galaxy maybe? Sjoe, was it Tramps in Voortrekker Road those days? What was the names of the clubs in Cape Town – their names elude me now, but I think they were in or near Riebeek Street.

Grabbin chow at 2am at the Diz in Cape Town

Visiting the Southern Sun and buying a southern comfort & lemonade and being *** SHOCKED *** at the price of R16 – I still clearly remember this!

Ya, that was a good era to grow up in.

The Pixies single handedly saved the 80's and made it all worth while ^_~

I love that band! I need to find my THE PIXIES Death To The Pixies Limited edition double CD....

Wonder if it's in the same place I found my Clash cd a while back?

Also liked The Smashing Pumpkins ;)
