Alfa Romeo Giulia awarded Top Safety Pick+ by IIHS

The 2017 Alfa Romeo Giulia has received the Top Safety Pick+ award from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) in the United States … when equipped with the optional front crash prevention and curve-adaptive headlamps, that is.

In order to achieve this rating, a vehicle has to score five stars in all of the crashworthiness tests, which include small overlap front, moderate overlap front, side, roof strength and head restraints evaluations. This rating was awarded to the Mazda CX-5 not too long ago.

This score applies to Giulia models built after May 2017, which benefit from a reinforced front structure, door hinge pillar and door sill. This improves the Italian sedan’s occupant protection in the small and moderate overlap front crashes. Other changes made to the safety of the Giulia include revised head restraints and front crash prevention system, as well as the factory readjustment of the headlamp aim.

With its optional front crash prevention system, the Giulia was able to secure a superior rating as it avoided a crash in the 12 mph (19,3 km/h) IIHS track test. This system also benefits from a forward collision warning that adheres to National Highway Traffic Safety Administration criteria.

The aforementioned optional curve-adaptive headlamps earned a good rating, which is an improvement over the standard headlamp’s “poor” rating.

Alfa Romeo Apparently Working On Middle Variant Of The Giulia

The Alfa Romeo Giulia has turned out to be a winner for the brand and if the internet swirling rumors are correct, set to unleash a new warm variant of its Giulia sports sedan into showrooms.

We say warm because it is understood to sit between the hardcore Giulia Quadrifoglio and the regular models.

This information was discovered by a journalist after coming across some juicy information on Fiat Chrysler’s website recently and if the information is accurate, the newcomer will develop 260kW from a familiar 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo-petrol engine.

Such a model would do direct battle with the likes of the Mercedes-AMG C43 and Audi S4 with something along the lines of a sub-five-second 0-100 km/h time.

1. Refined and efficient

This new Alfa Romeo chassis and powertrain has pleased the pundits. A 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder is on duty and it pushes out 147 kW and 330 Nm. Power goes to the rear wheels via an 8-speed automatic gearbox. It may be a bog-standard automatic but it has been mapped to feel like a sportier dual-clutch gearbox. It’s a refined and responsive setup.

Despite its performance capability, the Alfa Romeo Giulia is also fuel efficient and is claimed to consume just 5.9 L/100km.

2. Tech and safety galore

The Alfa Romeo Giulia comes to market with substantial tech as standard. Dual-zone climate control is a nice standard feature and the 8.8-inch infotainment system connects quickly via Bluetooth and USB ports – it's one of the better phone-to-car systems we’ve used. Navigation is available too.

One of the biggest drawcards of the Giulia is the safety spec. There’s a full complement of airbags and stability control systems, the Giulia features an integrated brake system, forward collision warning with autonomous emergency brake and pedestrian recognition, lane departure warning and cruise control with speed limiter. A blind-spot monitoring system, meanwhile, is an optional extra.

3. Driving bliss

The Giulia was conceived as a performance car first with the chassis designed and tweaked specifically for it. The engine moves the Giulia along effortlessly and is quick to respond to throttle inputs. There’s plenty of torque in reserve if you need to overtake at freeway speeds and acceleration from standstill to 100 kph is claimed at 6.6 seconds.

It’s great fun to coax through your favourite twisty section and provides astounding confidence to push and find the limits. Grip levels are high, thanks to the 17-inch wheels.

#Drive360 Awards: The very best car of 2017 is...

The Suzuki Ignis is the overall winner of Independent Media’s 2017 Drive360 Awards.

The compact crossover vehicle was selected from 34 shortlisted cars chosen by Independent Media’s motoring journalists, and announced at a prize-giving ceremony in Rosebank, Johannesburg, on Friday afternoon.

The judges are from Drive360, a motoring supplement appearing weekly in The Star, Pretoria News, Daily News, The Mercury and Cape Times; and from the IOL Motoring website.

“The Ignis is a small car that punches above its weight in a very competitive market segment,” said Drive360 editor Denis Droppa, who was one of the judges.

“The competition was fierce this year from amongst the dozens of new cars, bakkies and SUVs launched in 2017, but our judges were unanimous in selecting the Ignis as their overall winner. With its sassy styling and appealingly modern cabin, along with surprisingly perky urban performance, this little urban adventurer goes above and beyond what is expected at the price, which starts at R170 000.

“It’s refreshing to see a budget car winning the title. Value for money is a very important criterion in our awards, and the Ignis was unbeaten in this regard. It’s a budget car with real appeal and desirability, rather than just something you settle for on affordability,” he added.

The Suzuki Ignis, which also won Drive360’s Compact Car category, was launched in South Africa in June in a range of three 1.2-litre derivatives priced between R169 900 and R204 900, packaged with a three-year/100 000km warranty and two-year/30 000km service plan.

Equipment levels across the range are generous, with the flagship GLX version boasting keyless starting, fully automatic climate control, rear park distance control, and a six-speaker audio system with Bluetooth connectivity. Range-wide safety comprises dual front airbags and ABS brakes.

Awards were also handed out in the following categories:

Family Car

The Peugeot 3008 was voted Drive360’s family car of the year, the judges citing its striking new exterior and class-leading cabin, which features some of the classiest looking materials and design details seen in this segment.

Luxury Car

The BMW M760Li xDrive got the Luxury Car award. “BMW’s ludicrous new limo takes the ‘more is more’ philosophy to the absolute extreme. Its twin-turbo V12 makes it the fastest BMW on the market, but it’s indulgently luxurious,” said the judges.

Adventure Vehicle

The Range Rover Velar scooped the Adventure Vehicle prize in a hotly contested category, the judges saying: “This right-sized luxury SUV packages the brand’s well-known offroad ability into the most modern and high-tech Range Rover yet seen.”

Performance Car

The Porsche 911 GT3 walked off with the Performance Car title. “It may not be the fastest 911 but it’s arguably the most exciting. With an engine that howls to 9000rpm, this purist Porsche lays on the emotion several layers thick.”

Coolest Ride

The Alfa Romeo Giulia QV took the Coolest Ride category, voted by readers of the Drive360 motoring supplement and IOL Motoring.

Alfa Romeo Giulia Veloce

"Veloce" is a glorious name that is evocative of the Alfa Romeo tradition, established in 1956 with the Giulietta model and ever since illuminating the brand's outstandingly sporting and original versions. Today, the name Veloce glorifies another Giulia, to satisfy the needs of customers yearning for contents packed with personality.

Distinctive style and exclusive equipment

The exterior of the new Alfa Romeo Giulia Veloce stands out both for its refined styling features, such as the specific bumpers and glossy black door trim, as well as for various sports contents such as the special rear extractor which incorporates a double exhaust pipe and the optional 5-hole 19" alloy wheel rims. The same sporty feel reigns inside, where new black leather Sport seats dominate, plus a sports steering wheel with an original grip, aluminium inserts on the dashboard, central tunnel, door panels and Xenon headlights.

This distinctive interior and exterior style houses a wealth of standard equipment, including dual-zone climate control, the Alfa DNA system and 6.5" Connect infotainment system, as well as the new efficient active safety systems such as Forward Collision Warning (FCW) with Autonomous Emergency Brake (AEB) and pedestrian recognition, the Integrated Brake System (IBS), Lane Departure Warning (LDW) and cruise control with speed limiter.

Two new engine versions

The Alfa Romeo Giulia Veloce heralds the début of the new 2-litre petrol engine - a 4-cylinder engine made entirely of aluminium - which generates 280 horsepower at 5,250 rpm and a maximum torque of 400Nm at 2,250 rpm. In addition to the MultiAir electro-hydraulic valve activation system, the particular features of this engine include the "2-in-1" " turbocharger system and direct injection with a 200-bar high pressure system which combine to deliver a particularly quick response to accelerator commands at all speeds while permitting highly efficient consumption levels.

Alternatively, the Giulia Veloce can be fitted with the new 2.2-litre Diesel engine which develops a maximum power of 210 HP at 3,500 rpm and a maximum torque of 470 Nm at 1,750 rpm. A special note: the 2.2-litre turbo diesel engine on the Giulia is the first diesel engine in Alfa Romeo history to have been built entirely in aluminium. With four cylinders in line, this engine stands out for its latest-generation injection system with MultiJet II technology and Injection Rate Shaping (IRS), along with operating pressures of 2,000 bar. The electrically-operated variable geometry turbocharger offers state-of-the-art mechanics and minimises response times while also guaranteeing benefits in terms of efficiency. The most sophisticated driving satisfaction and comfort levels are also guaranteed by the use of a balancing countershaft.

Both the new Alfa Romeo Giulia Veloce models come with 8-speed automatic transmission and are powered by engines made in Italy in the plants in Termoli (petrol) and Pratola Serra (diesel), in areas dedicated exclusively to Alfa Romeo engines, using state-of-the-art processes and methods which place them at the top of their categories for performance and efficiency.

What's more, the innovative "AE" - Advanced Efficiency - version will soon be available. Distinguished by a specific badge on the tailgate, this version - which is available on the Giulia and Giulia Super trim levels, is based on the 180 HP 2.2-litre Diesel engine with 8-speed automatic transmission.

The Advanced Efficiency variant achieves extraordinary results in terms of fuel consumption and emission levels: 4.2 l/100 km and just 99 g/km of CO2 in the combined cycle.

These results are obtained thanks to specific technical solutions, through the implementation of a low-pressure EGR valve that improves engine efficiency, an air-water intercooler, a secondary engine cooling circuit in addition to the primary circuit, and specific gearbox ratios. On top of this, thanks to a reduction of approximately 5 millimetres in the height of the car body and to exclusive, specifically-designed alloy wheel rims, the CX has been reduced to 0.23 for improved aerodynamic efficiency. Last but by no means least, the Giulia "AE" Advanced Efficiency is fitted with specific 205/60 R16 tyres for reduced rolling resistance.

The effects of these innovations can be seen in the overall performance of the engine, starting at low revs, with prejudice to its outstanding performance levels: a top speed of 230 km/h and 7.2" to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h.

Four-wheel drive with Q4 technology

The new Giulia Veloce offers the début of the innovative all-wheel drive system with Q4 technology, designed to handle vehicle traction in real time, and to guarantee outstanding levels of performance, efficiency and safety.

The architecture of the Q4 system fitted on the Giulia Veloce includes an active transfer case and a front differential designed to accommodate the specific technical requirements of Alfa Romeo, in order to handle a high torque extremely promptly with a particularly compact and light-weight design (the increase in weight is just around 60 kg). The transfer case uses advanced active clutch technology that provides extremely dynamic driving while at the same time guaranteeing reduced fuel consumption. Speedy response and accurate torque distribution are guaranteed by the Next-Gen integrated actuator, depending on the drive mode selected on Alfa DNA.

In particular, the Q4 system continuously monitors multiple parameters to guarantee optimum torque distribution between the two axles depending on how the car is used and on the available road surface grip. This technology is capable of foreseeing loss in wheel adherence, relying on the information gathered by the lateral and longitudinal acceleration sensors, and by steering wheel angle and vehicle yaw speed sensors. Under normal conditions, the Alfa Romeo Giulia Veloce with Q4 system behaves like a rear-drive vehicle: 100% of torque is distributed to the rear axle. As it reaches the wheel adherence limit, the system transfers up to 60% of the drive torque to the front axle in real time, thanks to a dedicated transfer case. To ensure maximum speed of response in re-distributing torque, the system exploits a high mechanical over slippage (up to 2.5%) between the two axles, which translates into segment-beating vehicle control in terms of traction and directional stability on bends.

The Q4 system on the new Giulia Veloce therefore provides all the benefits of all-wheel drive - in terms of stability, traction and safety - while also guaranteeing reduced fuel consumption, extra responsiveness and all the driving satisfaction of a car with rear-wheel drive.

Porsche Panamera Turbo PDK Yes, another plus-sized sedan. This 404 kW 4,0-litre twin-turbo V8-powered executive sedan has no issues with getting up to speed. With power delivered to all four wheels through an eight-speed automatic, there’s not much out there that can keep up with it.

Porsche 911 GTS PDK Many consider the 911 the perfect sportscar. While the GTS isn’t quite the flagship, its turbocharged 3,0-litre flat-six (mated to a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission) churns out 331 kW and 550 N.m … and that’s enough to beat even the manufacturer’s claimed time.

5. Jaguar F-Type 400 Sport Supercharged: 2,72 seconds

Hefty 380 mm front and 376 mm rear ventilated carbon-ceramic brakes combined with the Continental ContiSport Contact P5 tyres proved to be a winning formula for this big cat when it came to stopping sharply.

4. BMW M530d Steptronic: 2,71 seconds

This premium diesel sedan comes fitted with 374 mm front and 345 mm rear ventilated brakes and Michelin Primacy 3 tyres. And that results in a pretty impression braking time.

3. Peugeot 3008 1,6 THP GT-Line Auto: 2,70 seconds

Bet you didn’t expect to see this SUV here. To be honest, it surprised us as well. Peugeot’s stylish 3008 boasts 283 mm front ventilated and 268 mm solid rear discs, which is pretty much standard issue in this segment. Those Michelin Primacy 3s may just have given it the edge here.

2. Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio Verde: 2,62 seconds

The, er, “standard” Quadrifoglio Verde may not have the Race Edition’s carbon-ceramic brakes, but those Pirelli Corsa tyres work well enough to help the 390 mm front and 360 mm rear ventilated discs bring everything to a stop in a racecar-rivalling time.

1. Porsche 911 GTS PDK: 2,59 seconds

The 911 GTS comes fitted with 350 mm front and 300 mm rear ventilated discs and Pirelli P Zero tyres, which means it can get from 100 km/h to 0 in a face-bending time.

Here's How An Alfa Romeo Giulia Performs In A Crash Test

Watching crash tests of newer cars can be a great way to learn about which car would be the safest for you or your family. It’s also an excuse to watch YouTube videos of expensive cars plowing into barriers at 40 mph without worrying about the occupants.

It’s a win-win. You learn valuable safety information and you get to see some automotive destruction. For this test, the IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety), slammed a 2017 Alfa Romeo Giulia into a wall and called it science. This trial was called the “moderate overlap test” and it tested the Giulia’s ability to protect its occupants in case of an accident.

I’ve always wanted to know if I would be safe if I accidentally threw my Giulia into the corner of a 7-11 at 40 mph and the IIHS has answered my question. According to their test, the Giulia had a “Good” performance but I’m sure it won’t be driving again anytime soon with the front right side of the car shaved off.

Crash tests are full of automotive schadenfreude. It’s a time-honored tradition to watch a car get obliterated in the name of safety. The IIHS channel on YouTube is full of crash test videos and can be found here.
