Alfa reveals ‘Ring editions of Giulia and Stelvio QV

Alfa Romeo currently holds the Nürburgring lap record for SUVs (with its Stelvio Quadrifoglio), having earlier claimed the fastest time for a sedan (the Giulia QV has since lost the title to the Jaguar XE SV Project 8). And now the Italian automaker has released a pair of special-edition models to celebrate its on-track achievements.

Both the sedan and SUV are lathered in carbon-fibre bits, with each furthermore featuring a dark grey paint scheme and special “NRING” badging. Alfa says it will build just 108 examples of each, adding items such as carbon-ceramic brakes, Sparco racing seats, a Mopar automatic shifter and a steering wheel clad in leather and Alcantara with carbon inserts. Additionally, the Giulia sedan is fitted with an exposed carbon-fibre roof. No changes have been made to the turbocharged 2,9-litre V6 that does duty in both the Giulia Quadrifoglio and the Stelvio Quadrifoglio.

In addition, there are a few more packs revealed for the rest of the Alfa line-up. The Stelvio Super, which boasts the 147 kW/206 kW turbocharged 2,0-litre four-cylinder engine, can now be fitted with a performance pack, adding active suspension, self-locking rear mechanical differential and solid aluminium paddle shifters.

Furthermore, Alfa has announced that the 206 kW Giulia Veloce (which is scheduled to arrive in South Africa in the second quarter of 2018) will soon be available in Ti (“Turismo internazionale”) trim. This adds a black roof, 19-inch five-spoke alloy wheels and red brake calipers, while the cabin gains a leather-clad dashboard with carbon inserts, leather and Alcantara seats with black stitching, and backlit branded kick-plates.

Lastly, Alfa Romeo has revealed Competizione and Italia versions of its 4C Coupé and Spider. The two new variants of the mid-engined performance car gain a matte Vesuvio grey paint with carbon-fibre accents, 18-inch front and 19-inch rear dark-finish five-spoke alloy wheels and Akrapovič titanium exhausts. Inside each, you’ll find a set of leather and microfibre seats, a steering wheel with red stitching and a plaque of authentication. Just 108 units of each model will be produced.

Alfa Romeo Giulia and Stelvio Quadrifoglio NRING editions on show

Nürburgring-inspired special editions pay tribute to the brand’s effort in breaking Nordschleife records; Alfa will take a variety of tweaked models to the show

Alfa Romeo has unveiled NRING editions of its Stelvio and Giulia Quadrifoglio models at the Geneva motor show, in celebration of its record-setting laps of the Nürburgring for a four-door saloon and an SUV.

Performance is unchanged, so both cars retain the 503bhp 2.9-litre twin-turbo V6 engine used by the respective standard variants. That means a top speed of 191mph and 0-62mph time of 3.9sec for the Giulia, and 176mph and 62mph in 3.8sec for the Stelvio.

108 of each NRING edition will be made, one for each year of Alfa Romeo’s history, with collectors and loyal Alfa Romeo customers targeted for the limited-run cars.

Carbon-ceramic brakes, Sparco carbonfibre seats, carbonfibre interior trim, a Mopar-branded gear shifter and Mopar floor mats are included, while the cars are differentiated on the exterior by 'NRING' badges as well as carbonfibre mirror caps and side skirts. The Giulia gets exposed carbonfibre on its roof, too.

Equipment is upgraded to include adaptive cruise control and a premium sound system.

The Stelvio’s SUV lap record of the Nürburgring of 7min 51.7sec, revealed back in September, broke the Range Rover Sport SVR’s record of 8min 14sec, while the Giulia set a lap record of 7min, 32sec. The Jaguar XE SV Project 8 has since deposed the Giulia QV with a time of 7min 21.2sec.

The two variants will sit on Alfa Romeo's Geneva show stand alongside the Stelvio, which gets a new Performance Pack adding a locking rear differential, aluminium paddle shifters and Alfa’s active suspension system.

A Giulia Veloce Ti edition, which adds a extra equipment and 'Turismo Internazionale' badging to Alfa’s warm Giulia is also on show, as are Competizione and Italia versions of the 4C Coupé and Spider.

Alfa Giulia coupe to pack 641bhp with F1 hybrid tech

Energy recovery system is tipped to make the coupé Alfa’s most potent road car yet

Alfa Romeo is developing a new Giulia coupé that features a Formula 1-style energy recovery system (ERS), according to Autocar’s sources.

Two powertrains are said to be under development using the system. One is based on the 276bhp 2.0-litre turbo petrol engine used in the Giulia Veloce saloon. The other uses the 2.9-litre turbo petrol V6 of the Giulia Quadrifoglio.

The 2.0 version develops around 345bhp combined, and the 2.9 V6 a mighty 641bhp to create the most potent road- going Alfa Romeo yet, with an output only 20bhp short of the 661bhp Ferrari 488.

Among its potential direct competitors, BMW’s M4 DTM produces 493bhp (454bhp in CS form), the Audi RS5 444bhp and the Mercedes-AMG C63 S Coupé 503bhp.

The Giulia coupé could appear towards the end of this year and go on sale in 2019.

Rumoured in some quarters to be badged Sprint – although GTV would be historically more appropriate – the coupé is derived from the Giulia saloon (pictured below).

The forward set of exterior panels are likely to be carried over, but there will be a new rear roofline, different rear quarter panels and longer doors to ease access to the rear seats. Alfa will likely be keen to provide good rear-seat accommodation. Its previous GT model provided excellent accommodation for a coupé and sold better as a result. A new nose design, to distinguish the coupé from the saloon, is also likely.

The Giulia coupé will probably have a conventional boot, but it’s conceivable that Alfa might develop a five-door hatch version to compete with the Audi A5 Sportback and the BMW 4 Series Gran Coupé, a derivative that would significantly widen its appeal.

A conventional Giulia engine range is also likely to be offered, consisting of the 197bhp and 276bhp 2.0 turbo petrols and the 503bhp Quadrifoglio V6. The 148bhp diesel is also a possibility.

The ERS may well be a development of the HY-KERS set-up developed by Ferrari and Magneti Marelli for the LaFerrari, which, the company claims, is more advanced than the type used in its F1 cars. It is performance rather than economy and emissions oriented, the electric motor’s ample low-end torque complementing the petrol engine’s torque curve, which is fatter at higher revs.

Nevertheless, the ERS powertrains will produce fewer emissions and better fuel consumption than conventional engines of similar outputs. Installation of the system is likely to present Alfa Romeo with quite a packaging challenge. The motor, control systems, inverter and battery pack will all need to be accommodated and there might also be a liquid cooling system to optimise battery performance and durability, as with the LaFerrari.

The launch of these high- performance hybrids should do much to bolster Alfa Romeo’s already improving reputation for competitive hardware, potentially helping to give the brand the kind of technological lead it enjoyed in the 1960s.

Is it really necessary to post the same article in multiple threads?

This Alfa comment was only posted in the Giulia & Stelvio threads, both kind of important vehicles to Alfa for obvious reasons.

It was not posted in the Giulietta & 4C threads as that would fall under spamming.

problem lies with Alfa South Africa, no marketing, not offering buy back options, no customer support, zero interest in the Alfa brand.
And then general public are very brand loyal in this country. Tell a Hilux buyer just to look at the Nissan Nivara, they just simply wont for no reason at all.
