Given how rapidly the rest of the compact saloon segment has progressed, this updated Giulia merely maintains its position rather than challenging for class superiority. That said, anyone searching for an engaging drive should still have one on their list alongside the 3 Series and Jaguar XE.

Alfa Romeo Giulia and Stelvio gain improved interiors (and infotainment)
Alfa Romeo has made significant changes to the interiors of its Giulia and Stelvio models, showing off the updates at AutoMobility Los Angeles.
The sedan and the SUV each boast what the Italian firm describes as an “enhanced premium interior”, along with new equipment, fresh safety features and a new 8,8-inch touchscreen display.
The updated cabin incorporates a new centre console, which gains a machined-knurled aluminium-look rotary dial, upgraded knob materials and increased storage capacity. There’s also now an Italian flag badge affixed to the base of the gear-shifter, while a new phone storage area (with optional wireless charging) makes its debut. The Giulia, furthermore, gains larger cup holders.
Both the Giulia and Stelvio also score a new leather-wrapped gear-shifter and a “race-inspired” steering wheel, the latter complete with push-button start.
And that new touchscreen? Well, Alfa says it offers a selection of “interactive widgets” and a horizontal scroll layout that provides additional personalisation options and “enhanced interactivity and visibility”.

According to unnamed Fiat Chrysler Automobiles sources cited by MoparInsiders.com, the Italian firm plans to boost its 2,9-litre V6 from the 375 kW offered in the current Giulia QV to a whopping 460 kW in the rumoured GTA.
While it’s not yet clear whether this power upgrade would be accompanied by an all-wheel-drive system, whatever the case the claimed zero to 100 km/h sprint time would surely fall from the current model’s 3,9 seconds.

Alfa Romeo is plotting a high-performance flagship version of its Giulia Quadrifolgio performance saloon with more than 600bhp, reports suggest.
US site Mopar Insiders reports that the Italian firm could revive its historic GTA nameplate for the new model, which is also expected to weigh around 20kg less than the standard model.
The new Quadrifoglio GTA is likely to use an uprated version of the standard model’s 2.9-litre twin-turbo V6. A quoted power figure of 612bhp represents a 114bhp boost over the current Quadrifoglio, and would give the new model a significant power advantage over its BMW M3 and AMG C63 rivals.

Alfa Romeo’s product development plans may have been scaled back drastically, but according to a report, the Milanese marque is reportedly planning to resurrect its famed GTA badge when it unveils a beefed-up and lightened version of the Giulia Quadrifoglio super sedan around mid-year.
Under the leadership of the late Sergio Marchionne, there were bold plans for Alfa Romeo. Apart from the production version of the Tonale compact family car and another upcoming SUV, the Italian firm had plans to flank the Giulia business class sedan and Stelvio executive SUV with a new Giulia-based GTV sports coupe and a successor to the 8C supercar. Indeed, there were even rumours of an all-new Giulietta, a Premium SUV to rival the likes of the Audi Q7, BMW X5, Mercedes-Benz GLE and Volvo XC90, plus an executive sedan – Alfa Romeo’s first since the underappreciated 166.
