I just think no matter what country you're in, if it has dangerous areas (yes that one can get raped and murdered in) I'm pretty sure that the locals upon hearing news of some naive foreigner coming to their fate in such an area would be quite blaze about it too.

It depends - do those locals appreciate (intellectually) the influx of money that comes with tourism, or not? If yes, they will take care of their tourists.

In my travels, I have found myself in some dodgy places on occasion too and I guess I might have become a statistic as well. Unfortunately, a lot of people 'switch off' some of their natural warning instincts when on holiday, because they are relaxed and maybe also because they crave a little something out of the ordinary.
 
do any of us really care about a tourist spending their money in Sandton or the Waterfront if we are living in a township or leafy suburb? We only care about them if they come to our door and buy something.

If a person in a township or suburb has a eatery or B & B they are the ones that will look after the tourists but it's the neighbour down the street that has squat that will also be eyeing out that tourist but for different reason.

Ludicrous reasoning.

I do not gain anythying PERSONALLY and DIRECTLY from tourism, but I do not commit crimes against them.
 
What is going to happen to guys who did this after they get caught?
Nothing. If it is proven against them, then they will get free food and bed for 20 or 30 years.
If it is not proven against them they will commit crimes again until they get free food and bed.
Policies must change.

I think most South Africans are ready for policy changes, just most people are too afraid to pressure the politicians and their fellow South Africans.

Would you also like the free prison food and bed in exchange for your freedom? If yes then commit a serious crime and hand yourself over to the police...simple.

We can change things, but we have to be interested in it first. The SAPS doesn't want to release statistics, and neither do other bodies like the TMNP (Table Mountain National Park). Our local CPF doesn't answer e-mails, and the residents association is a shower.

What to do?

This has most likely happened over the years, and its sad. But i believe this type of punishment should be brought back in. Rapists, murderers, etc.. Sorry but they do not deserve to breath air and live off tax payers, plus its population culling.

So you basically say that if innocent people are executed, it is just tough luck and they are collateral damage? Wow.

Yes in a nut shell i am, because throughout history that has happened perhaps so many times you can count on one hand, as opposed to executing the correct people.

Edit: I am not going to debate with you on this, you are entitled to your views on the subject as am i. I have been in a situation before, and i would love those individuals brought to justice and executed.

The innocent person who is executed is 100% as much a victim as is the victim of the actual crime that took place.

I thought about it, and it still does not change my views on the subject. Yes there are victims what about the thousands of other people who get raped or family members murdered, only for the person doing the crime to get off free ? Lets face it the justice system in this country is beyond a joke. Prisons are overflowing with these skum.
