The Asic thread

Haha! Noooo.... I'll hold on to my L3+, but that S9 is looking pretty sweet.

Ah yes... I would also consider that for a bit of variety. Definitely a better buy than the D3 IMO.
Sorry - just realised I saw S9 and read L3+ lol.

I see Baikal is doing presale on the next batch of X10 and the expected delivery date is 20-30th of December. Anyone getting one?

But with my luck I will buy one, and then profits go for a ball of snot again the moment I eventually get it.

I have enquired and the price is $1399 a unit, then this morning the profits dropped to R380p/d, but has since recovered to over R500p/d so its a tough one to decide on.

Edit: Just received an Email stating delivery cost will be $310 to SA :wtf:

Just got this too...

Anyone ordering? It's very tempting.
@dj I asked for pricing right after you posted it, sorry lol. For some reason I totally overlooked that. Price is not bad for what it is IMO.

I'm wary to buy into the hype (again) like with the D3. Sure, it has a little bit more variety than the D3 in terms of algo, bit still. Don't know if I can justify dropping another R30k-odd on yet another maybe.

Edit: I'm really tempted though.

It makes next to nothing on the X11 algo. Profitability is all on quark and qbit. I'm going to likely pull the trigger on 3.

For anyone wondering how reliable Bitmain hardware is... I've been uber impressed with the PSUs in general, but today one of my PSUs' fans packed up. It literally just stopped working. I didn't notice until I went into the room and saw the lights off on the machine and the PSU was hot to the touch. I took it apart, tested the output to the fan and got 12v, then tested the fan on another PSU and confirmed it was faulty. Luckly my local electronics supplier had an identical 60mm fan - it's probably marginally less powerful, but it's working fine - the PSU doesn't get that hot on the inside. R70 repair.

So there you go - stuff happens when you run anything 24x7. That was way sooner than I had hoped to be honest.

I am a bit bugged that it doesn't appear to have it's own auto shutdown - it's pretty simple... unless the fact that the machine was off is an indication that it does indeed have a temperature sensor and auto shutdown... not sure. I'm going to use my Pi Zero and DH-22 sensors to monitor and shut it down in future.

Well, I just realized, I can just cancel my D3 order. Having gone through the terms and conditions, there is nothing stipulated regarding the terms under which an order can be cancelled, other than attracting a nominal cancellation fee. If by some miracle I get this done (I'm fully expecting some push-back), I'll be laying out for an S9 or Baikal instead.

Hold thumbs!

Let us know...

Do you think they will easily enough incorporate additional algos, which seems to be a big selling point? And how easily will they be able to do this?

That's a little disappointing, really. I honestly expected the PSU and associated components to outlast the miner. I suppose there are a lot of variables that influence the longevity, glad you got it sorted easily enough.

I suspect it was something as simple as an IC on the tiny round board that controls the fan. Gone are the days that a 12v fan is a simple electromechanical device.

I requested an invoice for 3x Baikal Giant X10s and got a dear John letter to say no more are available for preorder.

I hope you can. S9 or L3+ are way better right now. Profitability on Nicehash reports a negative for the past 24 hours :/

Yeah they haven't responded to my request yet, but yeah, like I said, I fully expect some resistance...
