Leaked pics are out ahead of the unveiling. It Inherits lots of tech & design touches from the new A8.

2018 Audi A6: images leak online ahead of official showing

Fifth-generation Audi A6, due in the UK in April, will be equipped with Level 3 self-driving technology, as first seen on Audi's range-topper

Leaked images of Audi’s fifth-generation A6 suggest the upcoming four-door will inherit design and technical features from its bigger sibling, the A8.

Three pictures of the BMW 5 Series rival have surfaced online before Audi could pull the wraps off, showing that the saloon will feature a front and rear heavily influenced by the A8 when it arrives on roads this April.

At the front, the A6 in the leaked images sports angular headlights either side of a wide-mouthed grille, while at the back, a chrome strip stretches across the width of its rear. The smaller A6 does, however, have more emphasised rear wheel arches than the more discreet A8.

Audi has refrained from commenting on the leaked pictures, but the car’s clear relation to the A8 suggests it will have a similarly clutter-free design for its dashboard. A dual screen Virtual Cockpit system, like the one in the A8, is likely to be included inside as well.

Autocar understands that the A6, which will be on display at the Geneva motor show next month, will also be equipped with the same self-driving technology that was pioneered on the A8.

This should garner the saloon with Level 3 autonomous driving abilities where permitted. Level 3, according to the six-level scale of self-driving capability established by automotive engineering organisation SAE International, means 'conditional automation'.

In this state, the car is able to control most aspects of driving and monitoring the road, but the driver must be ready to intervene when necessary. The A8 was the first production car to feature such technology when it was launched earlier this year.

New Audi A6 guns for 5 Series with mild-hybrid power and A8 cabin tech

All-hybrid line-up, clever infotainment and Level 3 autonomy all feature in the new A6

Audi believes its all-new A6 saloon is finally the car to usurp the BMW 5 Series as champion of the ultra-competitive executive saloon class, thanks to its complete reinvention inside and out, with a new look, fresh technology and a bolstering of its sporting appeal.

The eighth-generation A6, on sale in June, will be available with mild-hybrid engines only – much like the recently launched A7 – and will later offer a plug-in hybrid as “bridge technology” to pure electric.

For now, the new executive saloon will be offered with four engine options: a V6 3.0-litre TFSI petrol and three diesels, a 2.0-litre TDI and a 3.0-litre TDI in two states of tune.

The 3.0 TFSI and 2.0-litre TDI use a 48V electrical system, which has a lithium ion battery positioned in the rear axle and a starter/generator at the front of the car. This mild-hybrid system switches off the engine and cruises between the speeds of 34mph and 99mph. When decelerating, it switches off the engine between 4mph and 14mph.

The two 3.0-litre TDI powertrains instead use a 12V electrical system that does not offer these features. The 12V system allows CO2 to be reduced by 4g/km and the 48V system cuts CO2 by 10g/km.

Although the mild-hybrid line-up is currently unusual in the car market, many manufacturers will soon offer the same in order to meet ever-demanding CO2 and air quality targets.

Audi also says a smaller petrol unit, a 2.0-litre TFSI, will arrive in the UK at some point in response to the growing demand for petrol, as diesel sales continue to fall.

Although there is no confirmed date for a plug-in hybrid A6, Audi said the chassis accommodates it. “We believe a plug-in hybrid will be bridge technology to electric,” said a spokesman. “Maybe there’s a surprise coming up.”

The new A6 is now offered with an automatic transmission only. Demand for manual transmission in its predecessor was less than 5% and Audi also recognises that adaptive cruise control works much better with an automatic gearbox. It also allows for some of the A6’s 37 driver assistance systems, such as parking a car remotely from a smartphone app, which is an updated version of its existing Parking Assist system.

The UK will have two trim levels for the A6 – SE and S line – and Audi’s quattro four-wheel drive will be standard on all 3.0-litre models.

The A6 is 7mm longer at 4939mm, 12mm wider at 1886m and 2mm taller at 1457mm than its predecessor. That makes it fractionally longer and wider than the 5 Series but 22mm lower. Wheel size has alsoincreased and ranges from 17in to 21in. The largest wheel size available on its predecessor was 20in.

The new A6, which weighs from 1575kg, is 5kg-25kg heavier than the old one due to the mild-hybrid systems. “The lithium ion battery and starter/ generator add 25kg,” said A6 project manager Renald Lassowski. “We focused on overall consumption rather than reduced weight. We did try to improve other areas, though, such as reducing the weight of brake calipers.” Along with more sporty styling, Audi has also worked on the A6’s suspension to make it “as agile as a sports car, as manoeuvrable as a compact model”. The all-wheel steering’s ratio changes depending on the car’s speed, with the rear wheels able to turn as much as 5deg by a spindle drive. At high speeds, this is intended to improve stability. At low speeds, the aim is to make the car feel more agile and reduce its turning circle.

There are four suspensions available: standard suspension on SE models; sport suspension on S line cars; optional suspension with adaptive damper control; and fully adaptive air suspension, also an option. Inside, Audi claims there is more head room, shoulder room and rear leg room than before. Although boot space stays the same at 530 litres, the car maker says the boot has a wider aperture and can accommodate two golf bags horizontally.

Audi is positioning its infotainment system as a key selling point for the A6, describing it as a “futuristic operating concept”.

There are two central touchscreens, both 8.6in as standard, with a 10.1in upper screen available as an option. The system, known as MMI, allows vehicle functions, shortcuts and favourite buttons to be dragged and dropped, akin to a smartphone.

The top screen controls infotainment and navigation and the lower screen is used for climate control, convenience functions and text input. It has been designed so the driver’s wrist can rest on the gearlever.

Designer Philipp Römers said: “We see touch systems as the future. But we are not a big fan of iPads in the interior. That’s why we designed the black panel on A6 in a more driver-oriented position than in A8. So the panel is broken in the middle and angled to the driver.

“People are used to working touchscreens today in every part of their lives. We’re giving them what they know, making it easier for them to handle the car in the way they handle their smartphone.”

The new navigation includes a self-learning function based on driven routes, which generates intelligent search suggestions. For example, the system knows your daily route to work and will suggest another way if it knows there has been an accident. The nav also uses vehicle-to-x technology with other Audis for traffic and hazard information.

Among 37 driving assistance systems, bundled into three packages “to help avoid customer confusion”, there is the Level 3 autonomous driving system introduced on last year’s A8. Although the technology is available, the A6 faces the same issue as the A8: the legislation is not yet in place to allow the use of Level 3 on a public road unless it is for manufacturer testing.

This package of technology, new styling and mild-hybrid powertrains is what Audi hopes will help claw sales back from the 5 Series. The current 5 Series, launched in 2016, has achieved a growing advantagein sales over the older A6, with BMW selling almost 50% more 5 Series than Audi achieved for the A6 in Europe in 2017.

The 5 Series has long been rated the better car by Autocar in terms of both driving and all-round appeal but the A6 is highly rated too.

Premium executive saloons are one of the few segments not yet negatively affected by SUV growth – 2017 global sales were up 14%, according to Jato Dynamics – so Audi is in a good position to capitalise with the new A6.

Its pricing is expected to rise above the current model’s starting price of £33,160 to around £37,000. The most popular model in the UK is likely to be the 2.0-litre TDI S line S tronic.

An estate version, the A6 Avant, will be revealed later, and a hot RS6 version is very likely but unconfirmed. Audi will also offer a long-wheelbase version of the A6 for the crucial Chinese market.

Audi A6

With the new A6, Audi is presenting the eighth generation of its successful full-size Sedan and brings numerous innovations to the segment. Whether in terms of digitalization, comfort or sportiness - the elegantly sculptured Audi A6 is the multitalent in the luxury class. The all-digital MMI touch response system provides intuitive operation. The extensive connectivity and assistance solutions demonstrate networked intelligence. The interior systematically adopts digitalization and is groundbreaking in its segment. The suspension combines smooth ride comfort and high stability with enhanced sportiness. All engines have a mild-hybrid system as standard equipment for convenience and efficiency.

Drivetrain

As part of the launch in the European markets, Audi offers the new Audi A6 with two powerful, smooth engines - one diesel and one gasoline unit. The gasoline unit (combined fuel consumption in l/100 km: 7.1 - 6.7 (33.1 - 35.1 mpg); combined CO2 emissions in g/km: 161 - 151 (259.1 - 243.0 g/mi)) is a 3.0 TFSI. The V6 turbocharged engine accelerates the business sedan from 0 to 100 km/h (0 - 62.1 mph) in 5.1 seconds with 250 kW (340 hp) and 500 Nm (368.8 lb-ft) of torque; the electronically limited top speed of 250 km/h (155.3 mph) is a mere technicality. The 3.0 TDI with 210 kW (286 hp) produces similar performance (combined fuel consumption in l/100 km: 5.8 - 5.5 (40.6 - 42.8 mpg); combined CO2 emissions in g/km: 150 - 142 (241.4 - 228.5 g/mi)), it delivers 620 Nm (457.3 lb-ft) of torque to the crankshaft. While the 3.0 TDI is paired with an eight-speed tiptronic, the 3.0 TFSI is coupled as standard with a seven-speed S tronic. The two engines are equipped as standard with the quattro all-wheel drive, whose design varies depending on the specific setup. In conjunction with the tiptronic it comes with the self-locking center differential; in tandem with the S tronic the setup features even more efficient ultra technology, which always activates the rear-wheel drive instantly whenever needed. All gearshifts are automatic.

In conjunction with the tiptronic transmission the optional sport differential lends the A6 even more dynamic handling by actively distributing the power between the rear wheels. Like the dynamic all-wheel steering, the controlled damping and the adaptive air suspension, it is integrated into the control function of the electronic chassis platform. These systems are closely networked for innovative precision. The driver can select various driving profiles via the Audi drive select system - the wide spread from comfort through sportiness is even more pronounced than in the outgoing model.

The exterior design - technical and elegant

Like the A8 and A7 Sportback models, the A6 is the expressive ambassador of the new Audi design language. With taut surfaces, sharp edges and striking lines, the business sedan unmistakably conveys its character: sporty elegance, high tech and sophistication.

The exterior stands out with its balanced proportions - long hood, long wheelbase and short overhangs. The Audi A6 is 4,939 millimeters (16.2 ft) long, i.e. 7 millimeters (0.3 in) longer than its predecessor. The width has been increased by 12 millimeters (0.5 in) to 1,886 millimeters (6.2 ft) while the height at 1,457 millimeters (4.8 ft) is now 2 millimeters (0.1 in) more than on the outgoing model. The wide, low-slung Singleframe grille, the flat headlights and the powerfully contoured air inlets exude sportiness.

In the side view, three striking lines reduce the car's visual height. The powerfully taut contours, which are drawn over the wheels, are testimony to Audi's quattro genes. The taut roof line, which tapers into flat C-pillars, characterizes the silhouette. The short trunk lid ends in a curved separating edge for optimized aerodynamics. A striking chrome strip accentuates the three-dimensional sculpture of the rear and connects the rear lights.

The paint range for the new A6 offers a choice of 14 colors, seven of which are new. In addition to the basic version, customers have a choice of the two sport and design exterior trim lines as well as the S line exterior package. They differ in many details, for instance with the Singleframe or the side air inlets. All lines and all colors use the play of light and shade on the outer skin, thus accentuating the sculptured impression.

The lighting design - technology brought to life

The lighting design emphasizes the technical character of the A6. Audi supplies the headlights in three different versions. With the top-of-the-line version, the HD Matrix LED headlights, five horizontal lines form the daytime running light signature; they emphasize the width of the front. Above them are the dipped beam modules that look like pupils. Optionally, the lighting signature of the tail lights is made up of a single horizontal line and nine vertical segments for each unit; the brake light fills the areas in between. The dynamic indicator is included with the top-of-the-line equipment. When unlocking and locking the doors, a pulsing coming and leaving home function brings to life the combination of design and technology that is the hallmark of Audi.

Audi offers two different lighting packages for the interior: the ambient lighting package and the contour ambient lighting package. Both subtly animate the space, the volume and the materials. The ambient lighting makes the dashboard and center console appear to float. The contour lighting reproduces the clear lines of the interior architecture and can be set to 30 different colors.

The interior - futuristic design

The interior of the new A6 features a black-panel design - a cool look which expresses the technical competence and digital character of the business sedan. This creates a relaxed lounge atmosphere in a design language that comes across as reduced and matter-of-fact. The sleek instrument panel and the calm, continuous horizontal body line create an airy sense of spaciousness.

The center console in the new Audi A6 is directed at the driver; the top MMI touch response display is also tilted slightly to the left. With its black-panel look, it almost disappears into an aluminum clip when switched off. The display is activated when opening a door; its graphical user interface appears reduced, matching the interior design.

Colors and materials - a range of equipment for all tastes

The wide range of colors and materials available for the new A6 deck out the interior design with very different characteristics, from elegant through sporty, from technical through futuristic. Five versions are available: basic, sport, design, design selection and S line sport package (with 19-inch wheels and sport suspension). Each variant is associated with different color concepts. The choice and use of materials - from the open-pore wood trim through the leather upholstery on the instrument panel - attest to the uncompromisingly high quality of the new Sedan. Audi offers the S line exterior package as an option for all equipment lines.

The new Audi A6 is due to roll off the assembly line at the Neckarsulm site and will launch on the German market in June 2018. The basic price as the Audi A6 Sedan 50 TDI quattro (combined fuel consumption in l/100 km: 5.8 - 5.5 (40.6 - 42.8 mpg); combined CO2 emissions in g/km: 150 - 142 (241.4 - 228.5 g/mi)) is 58,050 euros.

Say hello to the new, eighth-generation Audi A6…

Audi has lifted the covers off its new A6 ahead of the official public debut of the eighth-generation version of the sedan at the Geneva International Motor Show.

Like the new A8 and A7 Sportback models, the A6 gains Audi’s latest design language. But, as has become the norm at Ingolstadt, the styling updates are evolutionary. At 4 939 mm, the new A6 is a 7 mm longer than its predecessor, while width and height have been increased by 12 mm and 2 mm, respectively.

Inside, the German automaker says the new A6 beats the outgoing model and “core competitors” (which include the BMW 5 Series and Mercedes-Benz E-Class) on rear legroom, adding that the luggage compartment now offers more loading width (even if the claimed capacity remains unchanged at 530 litres).

Audi says that its new A6 is “noticeably sportier” than the outgoing model, chiefly thanks to “innovative solutions” for the suspension. The new model gains dynamic all-wheel steering, a variable steering ratio and redesigned wheel suspension fashioned largely from lightweight aluminium. Audi will offer a choice of four variants for the suspension setup: the conventional steel spring suspension, the sport suspension, the suspension with damper control, and the adaptive air suspension, also with controlled damping.

All engines in the new A6 will come with the brand’s new mild-hybrid technology, pairing a belt alternator starter with a lithium-ion battery. The start-stop function kicks in up to 22 km/h, with the engine being restarted from standstill “predictively” when the vehicle in front of the sedan starts moving. During deceleration, the system recovers up to 12 kW of energy, which Audi says will help to reduce “real-world” fuel consumption by up to 0,7 L/100 km.

While local powertrain options have yet to be revealed, the new Audi A6 will be offered with two engines (one diesel and one petrol) at launch in Europe. The 3,0 TFSI is the brand’s familiar turbocharged V6, which hustles the A6 from standstill to 100 km/h in a claimed 5,1 seconds thanks to its 250 kW and 500 N.m outputs. The 3,0 TDI, meanwhile, makes 210 kW and 620 N.m, and is paired with an eight-speed tiptronic transmission (the 3,0 TFSI is mated to a seven-speed S tronic). Both feature all-wheel drive as standard.

Audi promises that the latest MMI touch response system (with haptic and acoustic feedback) in the new A6 “sets new standards” in terms of intuitive operation and personalisation. The all-digital system allows central vehicle functions to be placed in the required position in the MMI screen using a drag-and-drop function.

The driver manages the infotainment system on the top display, which has a 10,1-inch screen diagonal if MMI navigation plus (which also adds the Audi virtual cockpit, with its 12,3-inch display) has been specified. The lower 8,6-inch display, sited in the console in the centre tunnel, is used for the climate control and other “convenience functions”.

New driver assistance systems, such as “parking pilot” and “garage pilot”, which autonomously manoeuvre the A6 into and out of a parking space or garage, will also be offered.

New Audi A6 Revealed

Audi’s new A6 full-size business sedan has been revealed and it’s brimming with technology and edgy styling. Take a look at what the new A6 has to offer!

The current Audi A6 isn't quite a match for the new Mercedes-Benz E-Class and BMW 5 Series, but the Ingolstadt-based firm has now revealed an all-new, eighth-generation A6 that will take the fight to its rivals.

With its exterior design taking inspiration from the A8 and A7 Sportback, the new A6 is sportier and more sophisticated than its predecessor. It’s also bigger in all directions and now stands 4 939 mm long (+7 mm), 1 886 mm wide (+12 mm) and 1 457 mm high (+2 mm).

Design details

The new A6 is bigger than before and shares styling cues with the new A7 and A8.

The new A6 wears a wide, single-frame grille with large air intakes. Shapely angular headlights are fitted and buyers can opt for HD Matrix LED headlights with striking daytime running lights for maximum visual effect.

Pronounced character lines seen in the side profile give the new A6 a more purposeful look. At the rear, the new A6 features a short boot lid with an integrated spoiler with a striking LED taillight design that comprises 9 vertical elements and chrome strip to finish off the look.

A total of 14 exterior colours will be offered with a choice of various exterior trim lines including Sport, Design and S-Line.

Interior details

Audi's Virtual Cockpit makes its way into the new A6. The interior is plush with quality finishes.

The new A6’s interior is very similar to that found in the A7 with high-quality materials and finishes. The A6 will offer a large 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster as well as a 10.1-inch infotainment system as well as an 8.6-inch display that will take care of in-car convenience functions such as air-conditioning and seat settings. The front seats feature heating, ventilation and massage functions for added comfort.

In terms of connectivity, the new A6 is equipped with an MMI touch response system which operates much like a smartphone with drag-and-drop functionality. With a flat menu structure, the system is easier to use. MMI navigation is standard while MMI navigation plus will be offered as an option.

The larger A6 affords passengers more space and legroom, headroom and shoulder room is said to be more generous than before. The boot offers 530 litres of space, which is unchanged from the outgoing A6 and the boot lid can be opened with a kicking motion.

As you can expect, Audi will offer an extensive options list for the new A6 and various interior trims will be available.

Engine choice

Two engines with mild hybrid technology will power the new A6.

All engines offered in the new A6 will feature mild hybrid technology which consists of a belt alternator starter (BAS) which works in conjunction with a lithium-ion battery, contributing to a reduction in fuel consumption by 0.7 L/100km.

In Europe, the new A6 will be powered by a petrol and diesel engine. The turbocharged 3.0-litre V6 petrol engine will offer 250 kW and 500 Nm of torque resulting in a zero to 100 kph sprint time of 5.1 seconds using a 7-speed S tronic transmission. Top speed is limited to 250 kph.

A 3.0-litre turbodiesel will also be offered with 210 kW and 620 Nm of torque, coupled with an 8-speed tiptronic transmission and quattro all-wheel drive will be standard for both engines. The suspension and steering systems have been enhanced and according to Audi, the new A6 is more sportier than the outgoing model.

A wide range of sensors and cameras will enable advanced driver assistance in the new A6.

In terms of driving assistance, the new A6 can be equipped with parking pilot and garage pilot which will allow for autonomous parking using the myAudi app on your smartphone while standing outside the vehicle. These features form part of the Park Assist Package.

Audi A6 Avant

The new Audi A6 Avant combines dynamic design with superb everyday utility and excellent adaptability. The rear has a striking design, yet offers a flexible luggage compartment concept with 565 to 1,680 liters (20.0 - 59.3 cu ft) of capacity. The drive and suspension are designed with comfort and sportiness in mind. The standard mild hybrid system boosts efficiency while the dynamic all-wheel steering enhances maneuverability and agility. With its intuitive operation, the fully digital MMI touch response operating system offers a high level of convenience for driver and passengers.

Aesthetics and functionality - the exterior design

Attractive station wagons go by the name of Avant - the new A6 Avant continues this aspiration of the Audi brand. With sharp lines, large surfaces and the distinctive low-profile rear window, the exterior design reflects new design language of the brand. At just under five meters (16.4 ft) long, the Avant exudes elegance, sportiness and sophistication with its long front end and gently sloping roofline.

A wide, low Singleframe grille dominates the front, while the elongated silhouette and trapezoidal window surfaces dominate the side view. Distinctively shaped blisters, which visually emphasize the quattro drive, extend over the wheel housings. The muscular roofline flows into the low-profile D-pillar. The roof edge spoiler extends the silhouette and underlines the sporty look of the A6 Avant. At the rear, a decorative trim provides a link between the lights. In addition to the twelve paint colors, customers can choose from the optional sport and design exterior equipment lines as well as the S line exterior package.

Inviting - body, spaciousness and luggage compartment

The new Audi A6 Avant is 4.94 meters (16.2 ft) long, 1.89 meters (6.2 ft) wide and 1.47 meters (4.8 ft) high. Its interior is even larger than on the predecessor model. It beats the competition with front and rear elbow room as well as with knee room in the rear seat area.

2018 Audi A6 Avant revealed with 'dramatic' new look

Audi’s E-Class Estate rival adopts sleek sloping roofline without sacrificing practicality

The new Audi A6 Avant’s aggressively sloping bootline has been achieved without compromising load space and negates the need for the company to produce a shooting brake version of the car “like some of our competitors”, according to its head of exterior design, Helmut Jung.

The remark – likely referring to Mercedes – highlights Audi’s confidence that it has produced a car that will appeal to buyers both for its practicality and its looks. “This is a car that delivers on both fronts,” saidJung. “Usually such a dramatic line as the slope we have from the roof to the boot brings compromises but, because of the extended length of the car and some clever design work, we have exactly the same boot space as before.”

The A6 Avant’s boot volume extends from 515 litres to 1680 litres depending on whether the rear seats are up or down. Further practicality is added by functions that allow the seats to be laid almost flat at the push of a button and an optional feature that enables the boot to be opened by the key holder waving their foot under the rear bumper.

The boot capacity has also benefited from the car being 12mm longer than before. Additional packaging gains mean the boot length is 27mm longer, and cabin space is also enlarged in the front and rear as a result of a longer wheelbase. The cabin gains are said to particularly benefit elbow room throughout and rear knee room, which was criticised in the previous-generation model.

As with the saloon version of the A6, Jung highlighted the inspiration of the Audi Quattro in the styling, particularly for the blistered wheel arches. He also noted a personal goal of giving the car the visual impact of the 100 Avant. “The goal was a sporty, clean, progressive look,” said Jung. “It had to invoke the spirit of Quattro but also look timeless – we are in the business of creating cars that will look good in 10 years’ time, not just in this moment.”

Elsewhere, the A6 Avant follows the themes set by the saloon, such as its interior look and technology, including Audi’s new MMI and voice control systems. An all-wheel steering system is also available, to boost stability at speed and reduce the near five-metre-long car’s turning circle to 11.1 metres – one metre less than that of the outgoing car.

The A6 Avant will likely launch in the UK with the V6 pairing of the 286ps 50 TDI diesel and 340ps 55 TFSI petrol, both linked to an eight-speed automatic gearbox and mild hybrid system. Four-cylinder options will be launched at a later date.

Audi A6 Avant continues wagon heritage

The latest generation of the Audi A6 Avant has broken cover, bringing with it impressive boot and utility space, as well as a sleek aerodynamic design.

Based on the current A6 sedan, the Avant’s 4 940 mm long and 1 470 mm tall frame incorporates 565 litres of boot space and 1 680 litres of utility space.

A loading width of 1 050 mm, as well as standard fitment 40:20:40 electrically folding rear seat backs and an electrically operated tailgate, make access to the Avant’s spacious innards a cinch. The luggage compartment also has a railing system that owners can use to individually position four lashing points to secure cargo.

Estates are not renowned for being aerodynamically slippery, but the A6 Avant a sports an impressive drag coefficient of just 0,27. The Avant’s body retains the steel and aluminium composite construction utilised by the A6 sedan.

The Avant also inherits all of the A6 Sedan’s engines, including a new 48 V mild-hybrid system that pairs a belt alternator starter with a lithium-ion battery.

Given South Africans’ general disdain for Estates, it’s unlikely that we’ll see the A6 Avant reach our shores but, as with the previous generation, there’s always room for the smoking RS6.

New Audi A6 review - does the BMW 5 Series have a fight on its hands? - Auto Express

Audi A6 2018 review

Should I buy one?

There are several very good reasons for buying an A6. For a certain sort of person, the almost bleak sophistication of such a high-grade cabin will be dynamite, while the capability of the infotainment is superior to any rival. The car feels ahead of the curve, no question.

Ride quality is the acid test in this arena, however, but even on the 20in wheels, cruising refinement is generally outstanding, even if the air suspension has a jittery side to it. Again, British roads might paint a different picture – one we’ll aim to reveal in a few months’ time.

The BMW 5 Series, alas, remains comfortably the more rewarding steer but is less cultured in general. You might argue that this rather simplifies the buying decision depending on your outlook and intended usage.

The E-Class comparison is more complicated. Both are pretty exceptional tools if you’re talking big mileage, and any ground the Mercedes loses in terms of perceived quality and technology, it reclaims in its ability to soak up almost any road you point it down.

Overall, the A6 is convincing effort, even if this most potent of engine variants will remain a rare sight on the road. Indeed, it’s the 2.0 TDI ‘40’ that’ll be the mainstay, and there’s an argument for specifying that car with as little optional hardware – the dynamic steering, air suspension, and so on – as possible.
