The Audi A6 Thread

Rumours Of C8 Audi RS6 Sedan Spark Rendering

The last Audi sedan to wear an RS6 badge was the C6 model that packed a 5.0-litre V10 engine and it proved to be a quite prudent alternative to the E60 BMW M5 and the E63 AMG Mercedes. Then came the C7 RS6 with an equally potent twin-turbo V8 that made the station wagon a really cool car but it also meant that Audi no longer had a direct competitor to the BMW M5. Now though, there are rumours that the next generation RS6 will be offered in both Avant and sedan guise.

It has become mandate that when such news come out, Photoshop experts see an opportunity to showcase their craftsmanship. In this instance, Photoshop artist Tobias Büttner has come up with an idea of what the next RS6 Sedan could look like. And having seen the new design language on Audi’s latest products such as the RS3, RS4 and RS5, Büttner’s rendering does look much like a possible new RS6 especially when taking into consideration the similarity of the German automaker’s design throughout the models’ family tree, particularly those from the RS division.

Reports suggest that the RS6 Sedan is being brought back to life to cater for those markets less eager to have station wagons, markets such as China and the USA.

The next generation RS6 is also rumoured to have as much as 650 hp (485 kW) in its most potent form, with the base model packing 605 hp (451 kW) which is on par with the obvious rivals from BMW’s M division and Mercedes-AMG.

Audi A6 Avant 40 TDI Sport 2018 review

Should I buy one?

It depends what you want from an executive estate. Charm and character are in short supply here - the Volvo V90 and Jaguar XF serve you better in that respect. But the Audi corners with much more control than the Swede, and knocks the Brit for six when it comes to perceived quality, tech and space.

There’s a tougher distinction to make when it comes to the E-Class, which matches the A6 for cabin wow factor, and beats it for space and long-legged comfort. While a back-to-back test will confirm for sure, we reckon it’s the ever-dominant 5 Series that poses the biggest threat to Ingolstadt’s offering.

Age-old rivalries aside, there’s no doubt that the A6 is finally the true all-rounder its maker intends it to be, particularly with the more modest diesel engine. In almost every respect it is an improvement on the old car.

However, given their dominance in the cabin, the new infotainment screens are a major bugbear for this tester, particularly given Audi’s exemplary reputation with ergonomics. With many rivals featuring easier control systems, it’s a blot on the A6’s copybook that shouldn’t really exist.

Audi A6 2018 UK review

Should I buy one?

So capable is the A6 50 TDI that it’s easier to list the reasons why you wouldn’t buy one.

For one, unless this car’s particular brand of clean-cut droid-chic appeals, you’re unlikely to find it as likeable as many of its rivals, notably the Volvo S90. Perceived quality within the church-like expanse of the cabin is so great that it does yield a cosiness, mind.

For another, despite the broad competence of the chassis, the Audi is not as satisfying a steer as a BMW 5 Series or Jaguar XF. This is old news, but we’re not talking only about committed driving here – simply the subtle, sporting stance those cars take through corners, even at moderate speeds.

The controls in those rivals are more naturally weighted and the chassis palpably pushed from the rear axle. As such, if you enjoy not only arriving in comfort and style but also the act of driving, you’re courting disappointment in the A6.

Where the Audi excels is the manner in which it isolates its occupants on threadbare British roads. In fact the ambience is comparable to the previous generation of flagship saloons, such as the A8. Air suspension and the cultured, muscular efforts of the V6 are not cheap – £9000 more than for the entry-level 40 TDI – but together they raise the game of A6 to opulent heights.

See how the Audi A6 sedan handles the dreaded ‘Moose Test’…

The folks over at Spanish publication km77 have put the latest Audi A6 (due in South Africa in the first quarter of 2019) through the dreaded Moose Test, with the Ingolstadt-based brand’s sedan earning a “good” rating.

In the video below, the eighth-generation A6 – in this instance, the 50 TDI quattro tiptronic derivative, with optional rear-wheel steering – is subjected to one of the toughest handling tests out there, designed to simulate an animal suddenly running in front of a moving vehicle.

As we’ve pointed out before, though, whereas the Swedes usually perform the evaluation at about 60 km/h, this test from the Spaniards is conducted at higher speeds.

The A6 (here running on 20-inch alloys wrapped in Pirelli PZero rubber, in the 255/40 form) was put through the test first at 77 km/h. And, according to km77, it performed “brilliantly”.

The highest entry speed at which the driver completed the test successfully was 79 km/h.

Watch the clip below, which includes a slalom test, to see just how the Audi A6 performed (take note that the commentary is in Spanish, but has the option of English subtitles).

I actually prefer the full article being in the thread with the video link.
I also appreciate @FiestaST keeping us abreast of everything automotive.

@FiestaST don’t listen to this troll. Keep up the good work.

FiestaST has been providing an informative service for a long time. Maybe a tiny bit of appreciation before voicing criticism would give a better response.

New Audi A6 Allroad spied ahead of imminent launch

Audi's rugged 4x4 estate is expected to be revealed in the coming weeks, ahead of it going on sale later this year

Audi is expected to pull the wraps off its new A6 Allroad in the coming weeks, and new spy images show the model testing on the road with light disguise.

The jacked-up estate moves into its fourth generation this year, sticking close to the original brief of offering the same level of practicality as a standard A6 Avant, but with added off-road capability. It's closest rivals are the Mercedes E-Class All-Terrain and Volvo V90 Cross Country, alongside the wide variety of conventional SUVs.

Body camouflage on this test mule prevents us from seeing the bodywork additions, but expect protective plastic lower body cladding and metal skid plates front and rear. The car's ride height doesn't appear greatly increased, though this is likely because the air suspension has been set in a lower mode to help disguise the car.

Expect to see few changes to the standard A6's interior, bar some unique upholstery choices and new off-road modes for the Drive Select system. Engines will reflect the current A6 range, with a range of four and six-cylinder petrol and diesel engines making use of 12v or 48v mild-hybrid technology to boost efficiency. The firm's latest 'quattro with ultra' all-wheel drive system will feature, making use of the front wheels for the majority of the time but reacting quickly to traction changes.

Autocar understands the A6 Allroad is meant to be revealed globally in the coming weeks, so it looks increasingly likely that the car's first public debut will be the Geneva motor show. It will go on sale soon after the covers come off.

I don't know why, but for me the A6 always looked better than the A8.

New Audi S6 and S7 revealed … with 700 N.m diesel engines!

Audi has whipped the covers off its new S6 Sedan and S7 Sportback models (as well as the S6 Avant, for some markets), with the pair of performance models interestingly being offered with 3,0-litre V6 turbodiesel engines in Europe.

In the United States, Asia and the Middle East, however, the S6 and S7 will be fitted with a version of Ingolstadt’s TFSI-badged 2,9-litre V6. It’s not yet clear which powertrain will be offered in South Africa (we are, of course, still awaiting the arrival of the standard A6 and A7).

So, back to that TDI engine, which is mated to all four corners via an eight-speed automatic transmission. Audi says the powertrain, like that of the recently revealed SQ5 TDI (which is unfortunately not destined for SA), employs an electric powered compressor along with a 48-volt primary electrical system. As a result, the 3,0 turbodiesel six-pot delivers some 257 kW and a towering peak torque figure of 700 N.m (the latter on tap between 2 500 and 3 100 r/min).

That’s enough, says the German firm, to send the S6 Sedan from standstill to 100 km/h in 5,0 seconds, with the S7 Sportback taking one tenth of a second longer to reach three figures. The top speed of each is electronically limited to 250 km/h.

All-wheel steering will be offered as an option, while the S sport suspension will come with damping control as standard. This suspension arrangement lowers the body of the S6 by 20 mm and that of the S7 by 10 mm (resulting in the same ride height for both). Adaptive air suspension will be optionally available, as will a sport differential for the rear axle.

The uprated braking system will include six pistons on each wheel gripping steel discs (or optionally ceramic items) measuring 400 mm up front and 350 mm at the rear. A set of 20-inch wheels with 255/40 rubber will ship standard, while 21-inch versions will be offered as an extra.

Inside, standard features include MMI navigation plus (including Audi’s virtual cockpit with its 12,3-inch display), four-zone automatic air conditioning and Alcantara sport seats in the S6 (with “super sport seats” reserved for the S7).
