Nearly-new buying guide: Audi A6 saloon (2011-2018)

This desirable exec four-door looks quite a bargain. We show you which ones to go for

To paraphrase Henry Ford, you can have any Audi A6 saloon of 2011-18 you like, so long as it’s diesel. In fact, make that a 2.0-litre diesel, or 2.0 TDI as Audi has it. We exaggerate, of course, but only a little. The fact is that A6 2.0 TDIs outnumber any other A6 saloon variants of the same generation by a huge margin.

It’s not surprising, given the A6’s target market and the company car tax structure when it was new. Then there’s the engine itself, which bows only to the BMW 520d in terms of civility. The 2.0 TDI Ultra, launched in 2014, is extremely economical, too.

This emphasis on diesel could seem less of a draw for used car buyers, whose mileage might not appear to justify choosing an oil-burner and for whom benefit-in-kind tax savings are irrelevant. However, for these people, there are still good reasons to choose an A6 2.0 TDI or its siblings, the 3.0 TDI and high-performance 3.0 BiTDI. They include the sheer pleasure to be gained from driving such a comfortable, well-appointed and well-engineered car that is also economical and inexpensive to tax. Perhaps of greater appeal, though, is that most A6s are attractively priced, not least because buyers are favouring SUVs over executive saloons.

Audi A6 Avant 55 TFSI e quattro

Beautiful station wagons are called Avant - and are now also electrically driven and have zero local emissions. Following the A6 Sedan, the Audi full-size station wagon is now entering the market as a plug-in hybrid (PHEV). The intelligent drive management with a predictive operating strategy enables the new Audi A6 Avant 55 TFSI e quattro to achieve a high electric range, low fuel consumption and dynamic performance. The Audi A6 Avant PHEV has a comprehensive range of standard equipment on board, including the S line exterior package, Audi virtual cockpit, Matrix LED headlights as well as sport suspension and sport seats.

Audi is now also offering its successful full-size station wagon A6 Avant as a plug-in hybrid: The new Audi A6 Avant 55 TFSI e quattro has a system output of 270 kW (367 PS). Its drive concept combines a 2.0 TFSI engine with 185 kW (252 PS) of output and 370 Nm (272.9 lb-ft) of torque with a powerful electric motor. The permanently excited synchronous machine has a peak output of 105 kW and a peak torque of 350 Nm (258.1 lb-ft). Together with the separating clutch, it is integrated into a seven-speed S tronic, which uses ultra technology to transfer the drive torque to a quattro drivetrain. The Audi A6 Avant PHEV thus has an efficient and permanently available all-wheel drive for an equally high level of traction and dynamic handling. The system torque already reaches its maximum of 500 Nm (368.8 lb-ft) at a speed of 1,250 rpm.

The electric range of the Audi A6 Avant 55 TFSI e quattro is up to 51 kilometers (31.7 mi) in the WLTP cycle. This means that it is eligible for a 50 percent company car tax reduction in Germany. The A6 Avant PHEV accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h (62.1 mph) in 5.7 seconds. Its top speed is 250 km/h (155.3 mph) - in electric-only mode, the plug-in hybrid can reach a speed of up to 135 km/h (83.9 mph).

Audi A6 Avant 55 TFSIe quattro PHEV arrives with 362bhp

Four-wheel-drive petrol-electric estate offers more than 30 miles of electric driving at speeds of up to 84mph

The new Audi A6 plug-in hybrid is now available in estate form, following the recent unveiling of the saloon variant.

The A6 55 TFSIe quattro, first revealed at the 2019 Geneva motor show, takes its power from a 249bhp 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol engine, with a 141bhp electric motor integrated into the gearbox for a combined output of 362bhp. This powertrain also features in plug-in hybrid versions of the Q5 and A7 Sportback.

Power is sent to all four wheels through a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox, with maximum torque output rated at 369lb ft. The saloon will accelerate from 0-62mph in 5.6sec (0.1sec quicker than the estate), with both variants capable of a 155mph top speed.

A less powerful variant, the 50 TFSIe, is set to arrive later, offering 295bhp and 332lb ft.

The 55 TFSIe can run on electricity alone at speeds of up to 84mph for 33 miles on the WLTP combined cycle in saloon form, and 31.7mph in the estate. Audi claims “customers can do most of their daily driving electrically”.

Audi A6 (2020) Specs & Price in South Africa

Audi South Africa took to digital platforms to showcase the new A6 to the local media. Here's how much it will cost, as well as details regarding the S6.

Taking the fight to the BMW 5 Series and the Mercedes-Benz E-Class is the new Audi A6. It has been on sale since early 2020 but with its official launch being delayed by the local lockdown, this is the big sedan's official debut and introduction of a new engine to the range.

The Audi A6 is available in 2 engine variants, both diesel. The A6 40 TDI S tronic (7-speed dual-clutch) features a 2.0-litre TDI which produces 140 kW and 400 Nm. Audi is claiming a sprint time of 8.4 seconds and it'll run to a top speed of 237 kph. This model is also exclusively front-wheel-drive. The second model is the 45 TDI (available from June 2020), which features a 3.0 TDI producing 183 kW and 600 Nm. The engine is mated to a tiptronic gearbox (8-speed torque converter) with all-wheel-drive. The 2 models are further diversified with Matrix lights as standard on the 45 model while the 40 model makes do with LED lights.

The more performance-focused Audi S6 makes do with a 3.0-litre turbocharged V6 petrol engine with 331 kW and 600 Nm, which petrolheads will recognise as the same outputs as the RS4/RS5. Audi Sport claims 4.5 seconds to 100 kph, with a limited top speed of 250 kph. If you're wanting even more, well you're going to have to wait for the thundering Audi RS6 Avant which is due later in 2020. To further enhance the comfort and efficiency of the Audi S6, it is fitted with a 48V mild hybrid system. The S6 can coast between 55 and 160 kph and the start-stop kicks in from 22 kph. In real-world driving, the system reduces fuel consumption by up to 0.7L/100 km.

Wicked wagon! ABT reveals 300 kW tuning package for Audi A6 Allroad

ABT Sportsline has revealed a new tuning package for the A6 Allroad 55 TFSI and TDI, handing the lifted wagon up to 300 kW.

In certain parts of Europe, there’s still a market for performance wagons (and Audi’s certainly got things covered with its S6 and RS6 Avant models, which deliver 331 kW and 441 kW respectively). But ABT’s kit for the A6 Allroad is just as interesting.

By fitting its in-house engine control unit to the twin-scroll turbocharged 3,0-litre V6 petrol mill, ABT has increased the peak outputs of 250 kW and 500 N.m of torque to 300 kW and 550 N.m. The diesel engine, which boasts the same displacement, sees increases from the standard 257 kW and 700 N.m to 282 kW and 760 N.m. In addition, the A6 Allroad’s exhaust system can be fitted with the ABT Sound Control unit for additional volume.

REVIEW | Well, hello there! Reacquainted with Audi as we drive the new A6

• Audi A6 40 TDI impresses with good all-round package.

• 2.0-litre diesel engine has plenty of oomph.

• This Audi has a theoretical range of more than 1000km.

In summary

I knew that this Audi would impress, but just how much I could not predict. Though sports cars are just about everyone's default choice, this car could not have been a better reintroduction to Audi and its products. The svelte nature of the car impressed endlessly, and the cabin is a classy affair.

The three-year break ended on a, dare I say it, perfect note with the arrival of the A6 40 TDI because in this case absence made the heart grow fonder.

Verdict

All Audi's models are accomplished, even if the brand's sedan offerings tend to err on the side of understatement. It's going to take quite the offering to separate the good from the great in this segment, but this S6 is exceptional, inside and out. The keyword here is balance. If you want a luxurious, refined, and sophisticated sedan to commute in (often gridlocked) traffic, the big Audi will do that with ease. If you're looking for a vehicle with which to undertake long-distance journeys in absolute comfort, the S6 fits the bill.

But, if you like to occasionally break free from the rigours of everyday life and carve up a twisty set of corners with your chariot – which emits a captivating V6 soundtrack no less – the S6 delivers. Not only does the Audi cocoon its occupants in a beautifully finished interior, it effortlessly balances luxury and comfort with performance and handling.

And do you know what's the best part? The majority of SUVs can't blend those attributes nearly as well as the S6. Even though Audi's S and RS engineers are trying their utmost to engineer corner-carving ability into the Q range, a sedan will always be one step ahead dynamically. The executive sedan segment will soon heat up – an updated Mercedes-Benz E-Class is on the way and the facelifted BMW 5 Series is due to make landfall before the year is out, but the new Audi A6 presents a strong alternative.

If you want even more presence and performance than the S6 offers, you'll have to wait until early 2021, when the Audi RS6, which churns out 441 kW and 800 Nm (courtesy of its 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8) is set to make its arrival in the local market. It'll have its drawbacks, however. The RS6 will be offered in Avant (station-wagon) guise only, which limits its appeal, plus its performance will probably be overkill, given the limitations of South Africa's road network. The S6 is the next best thing, but far from a piecemeal derivative.

Audi A6 40TDI S Line (2020) Review

Fast Facts

Price: R919 500 (August 2020)
Engine: 2.0-litre turbodiesel
Power/Torque: 140 kW / 400 Nm
Transmission: 7-speed dual-clutch
Fuel economy: 5.2 L/100km
Boot capacity: 530 litres

Price and warranty

The Audi A6 40TDI S Line is priced from R919 500 and is sold with a 1-year/unlimited km warranty and a 5-year/100 000 km maintenance plan.

Verdict

There is so much to like about this A6 40TDI and, in S Line trim, it certainly looks the part. Equipped with the best in-car technology that Audi has to offer, the A6 is transformed into a classy tar-munching machine with all the comfort and entertainment features you could want from a car in this class, provided that you are prepared to pay for them…

Prospective buyers who want a heartier diesel engine may want to consider the A6 45 TDI quattro (it offers 183 kW and 600 Nm), but this 40 TDI derivative hardly lacks in terms of performance; it’s very much on par with its equivalent rivals. In fact, we think this A6 strikes a convincing balance between performance and fuel economy.

With a starting price of R919 500, the A6 40 TDI S Line undercuts rivalling products from BMW and Mercedes-Benz and is competitive in terms of its standard specification as well. You will, in all likelihood, be ticking off a few options and we advise that you do this with the utmost of care. Our test unit was heavily loaded with optional features that amounted to nearly R260 000 over and above the initial asking price, bringing the total price to almost R1 180 000.

Current trends indicate that buyers are increasingly favouring SUVs over sedans in the premium segment and the executive-class sedan market is, therefore, contracting in accordance with this shift in demand. Nonetheless, if you are in the market for an executive-class sedan, of which the well-balanced and eminently tasteful (if very understated) A6 is a shining example, then the 40TDI S Line is right up there with the best of them. You would be doing yourself a disservice by not having it on your shopping shortlist.
