The Audi A6 Thread

This is the ‘classic’ new A6 saloon: the slipperiest ICE-powered Audi ever built

Just what the world needs: a sensible, quiet, refined four-door that isn’t an SUV

Audi describes it as a ‘classic’, and while we’d normally insert the obligatory ‘it looks upset about something’ gag about now, there’s nothing upsetting about a simple, four-door saloon with internal combustion. ‘Classic’, you might say.

So welcome to the new Audi A6 saloon, which just happens to be the slipperiest combustion-engined Audi ever built. It boasts a drag coefficient of 0.23, though if you boast about it, those dinner party invites might get lost in the post. No matter, you’ll go further on a tank.

Much like they did with the recent A6 Avant, Audi’s designers have worked hard to force the air around, under and through the car more efficiently. This has been achieved via ‘air curtains’ at the front, new intakes, a front spoiler, additional underbody panels, a rear 'notchback' on the boot, and a wider rear diffuser, among other things.

Which means the petrol and diesel engines won’t have to work as hard. There are three units available – a turbocharged 2.0-litre four-pot petrol sending 201bhp to the front wheels, a turbocharged 2.0-litre 4cyl diesel with the same power available with either FWD or quattro, and a meaty 362bhp 3.0-litre turbo V6.

Sleek new Audi A6 revealed as firm's most aerodynamic ICE model ever

Audi has ripped the covers off its all-new, internal combustion-engined A6 saloon, and it could be the last of its kind.

This, of course, is not to be confused with the all-electric Audi A6 e-tron, which makes use of the electric-only PPE platform that was developed in conjunction with Porsche.

It also follows Audi’s about-turn on its revised naming strategy, which would have seen electric vehicles donning even model names and internal combustion models using odd letters. Thus, the ICE-powered A6 that you see here was originally set to be called the A7.

Nonetheless, the new A6 saloon comes to the party as the brand’s most aerodynamically efficient ICE model ever, boasting a drag coefficient of just 0.23.

Its sleek and low-slung design follows the design idiom first seen on the new A5 Sedan, which is likely to revert back to the A4 name.

Slippery slope: across Austria in the Audi A6 e-tron

The British ski team needed a ride to Kitzbühel... we had just the car for the job

Kitzbühel is pumping. Heaving. It hums and vibrates, shimmers with life and energy in a way that’s entirely explained by the 100,000 people who have crammed themselves into this small medieval Tyrolean town (usual population 8,300). Frosted breath steams into the chilled air as the crowds cheer and chant, cowbells swing frantically, Europop blares, beer sloshes, flares and flags wave erratically and bratwurst is consumed.

This is the Hahnenkammrennen, the most famous weekend on the Alpine calendar, the jewel in Austria’s ski racing crown, and all the excuse necessary for an almighty party. The stumbling and unsteadiness has nothing to do with the snow and ice underfoot. For many here the ski racing is entirely incidental.

But not for me. It’s rapidly approaching 6pm on Saturday evening, I’ve got British slalom skiers Laurie Taylor and Billy Major in the car and we’re stuck in traffic. This is bad. They need to be at the bib draw that sorts the start order for tomorrow’s race, I’ve got the right pass which eases us past the police, but cuts no ice with the crowds. We proceed at stumbling pace. If I had an engine, I’d rev it.

The Audi A6 Avant e-tron is our sort of electric car. By which I mean it’s not an SUV. How refreshing. It’s the most aerodynamic Audi there’s ever been, slipperier through the air than a ski gliding over snow. And zero emissions means we’re not causing the snow to melt – a literal hot topic in these parts. So how to put it to the test?
