New all-electric Audi supercar looks likely

The rumoured electric supercar is set to follow in the Audi R8 e-tron's footsteps which was only in production for 19 months

Audi is considering the launch of another electric supercar to follow its previous limited-run R8 e-tron.

“You can very well imagine that at some point in time we will have an electric supercar,” said Peter Mertens, Audi’s new R&D boss, at the Formula E race in Berlin earlier this month.

First mooted as far back as 2009, the R8 e-tron had a tortuous development, one that became mired in Audi’s internal politics. It was cancelled by Audi’s then development boss Wolfgang Dürheimer back in 2013 on the basis that battery technology was insufficient to deliver the targeted performance. Then Dürheimer’s replacement, Volkswagen’s engineering supremo, Ulrich Hackenberg, ordered that the e-tron be put into very limited production, with sales lasting just 19 months until the death of the first-generation R8 last year.

Audi E-tron electric SUV to arrive in 2018 with 310-mile range

Hackenberg has since departed, following the Dieselgate scandal, but Mertens — newly arrived from Volvo — made it clear that he is keen for Audi to have another halo electric model, although plans for such a car are still at an early stage.

“The question is ‘would I like to make it happen soon?’ and the answer is yes, of course,” he said. “For a brand like Audi, a supercar is always interesting and it’s a segment in which we have been playing. We have been a very serious player.”

Mertens has committed Audi to the development of e-tron models that will shadow the full line-up of the brand’s combustion-powered offerings.

However, his insistence that electric Audis will be distinct models in their own right suggests any range-topper would have a unique design rather than being another R8 spin-off like the e-tron.

Mertens said technical collaboration with Porsche is likely on fast EVs, and a super-sports version is likely to feature high-performance 800V electrics in place of the 400V system of lesser Audis.

He said: “800V puts a significant extra cost on the bill. We need to evaluate whether customers will be prepared to pay that… In segments like super-sports cars, the answer will be yes, no doubt about it.”

Audi R8 performance parts

Even more distinctive, sportier and faster: The new Audi Sport performance parts take dynamic handling to a wholly new level for the Audi R8 sports car and the Audi TT. The retrofit range will be available in dealers in late summer 2017 and features numerous components.

"With the Audi Sport Performance Parts we are tapping into a new business segment," says Stephan Winkelmann, Managing Director of Audi Sport GmbH. "Our wealth of experience garnered over many years of building sports cars is incorporated into every component we offer. Along with our expertise from motor racing, which is still the best test bed for volume production."

As part of the sales launch of the retrofit range in late summer 2017, the product lineup will initially be available in Germany and other markets for the current Audi R8 and Audi TT models (TT, TTS and TT RS) only. Additional model series will follow gradually. The Audi Sport performance parts cover four areas to date: suspension, exhaust system, exterior and interior.

For suspension requirements, the range covers sport brake linings, which are more powerful and less prone to fading than standard brake linings. Linings are available for steel discs and for the optional ceramic brakes. Their carrying plates are painted in fluorescent red and are made out of ultralight titanium on the Audi R8, making this model a kilogram (2.2 lb) lighter overall.

Steel front brake discs with multiple bolt mountings are available for the Audi TT RS. Various brake cooling kits can be obtained for the Audi TT, TTS and TT RS. They help the compact athlete achieve even better braking performance.

A two- or three-way coilover suspension is available for the Audi TT models and both Audi R8 variants. The fully milled, black 20-inch wheels - for all R8 and TT models too - are also taken straight from motor racing. They reduce weight by up to 7.2 kilograms (15.9 lb) on the Audi TT and up to 8 kilograms (17.6 lb) on the Audi R8. The associated sport tires come in the sizes 245/30 R20 (R8, front) and 305/30 R20 (R8, rear); 255/30 R20 tires are fitted all round on the Audi TT. For the TT coupés with quattro drive, the retrofit range includes a cross-member reinforcement bar on the rear axle. It improves rigidity and makes handling even more precise. Audi TT RS owners can also subsequently increase their car's top speed to 280 km/h (174.0 mph).

The specialist supplier of exhaust systems, Akrapovic d.d., has designed a sonorous, ultralight muffler made of titanium including trims specifically for the Audi TTS and the Audi TT RS.

The most spectacular offers in the Audi Sport performance parts are the Aero kits, which were developed in the Audi wind tunnel. For the Audi R8 and the Audi TT they add clear-cut highlights on the front air inlets, the side sills and the diffuser. They also substantially improve downforce: On the Audi R8 the downforce is 250 kg (551.2 lb) at 330 km/h (205.1 mph), an increase of over 100 kg (220.5 lb). The effect at 150 km/h (93.2 mph) is even more pronounced - the downforce is doubled at this speed to 52 kg (114.6 lb) thanks to the Aero kit. There is also a splitter and flics at the front as well as a large fixed rear wing. An engine hood with large air vent is also available for the Audi TT. All parts are made out of carbon fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP) for the Audi R8 and for the Audi TT out of CFRP and plastic; all of them feature the Audi Sport logo.

Attractive parts for the interior round off the range. A sport contour steering wheel with multifunction plus is available for the Audi R8 and for the Audi TT; its Alcantara-trimmed rim features a red 12 o'clock marking. CFRP shift paddles are available for the models fitted with seven-speed S tronic. Audi Sport has developed a strut cross brace specifically for the TT - also made out of CFRP. It replaces the rear seats, reduces the weight by some 20 kilograms (44.1 lb) and enhances the torsional rigidity. The brace improves handling particularly when cornering at speed.

Audi spices up TT and R8 with racy new parts

Audi will be giving its customers some cool new ways to spice up their cars with a range of retrofit Audi Sport parts for its performance models.

Initially the bits and bobs, which comprise suspension, braking and exhaust parts as well as various exterior and interior components, will only be available in Germany and other select markets. However Audi SA tells us that the parts packages are under consideration for our market.

For now only TT and R8 owners will be blessed with such options, but Audi has promised to gradually roll out components for other vehicles in its vast range.

Here’s what’s on offer so far:

Aero kits

Audi reckons the most spectacular items in its new Performance Parts portfolio (which don't include any actual engine-performance-enhancing parts for now) is its wind-tunnel-developed Aero kits for the TT and R8.

The kits, featuring components made from carbon fiber-reinforced polymer and a little plastic in the TT’s case, include front splitters, various accents for the front air inlets, side sills and diffuser and large fixed rear wings.

The parts also significantly improve downforce, according to Audi, in fact even doubling it by the time you get to 150km/h in the R8.

Suspension and wheels

Coilover suspension kits (two- or three-way) will be available for TT and R8 ranges, along with lightweight, black 20-inch wheels that claim to shave off up to 8kg.

TT owners can also opt for a crossmember reinforcement bar for the rear axle, which improves rigidity.

Exhaust

Akrapovic has designed a titanium muffler for TTS and TT RS models and it’s said to deliver a “sonorous” exhaust note. Given our previous experiences with Akrapovic exhausts, we have no trouble believing that one.

Brakes

Track day enthusiasts will no doubt enjoy Audi Sport's range of brake linings which are said to be less prone to fade. They’re available for both steel discs and ceramic brakes.

Audi will also offer brake cooling kits for the TT, TTS and TT RS, while the latter’s braking system can be beefed up further with upgraded steel front brake discs featuring multiple bolt mountings.

Interior

The cabin catalogue highlight for most will be the new Alcantara-rimmed steering wheel for the TT and R8, marked out by a red 12 o’clock marking, but more dedicated drivers will most appreciate the CFRP cross brace, for the TT, which replaces the rear seats and shaves 20kg off the car’s kerb weight while also making it more torsionally rigid.

CFRP shift paddles are also on the menu for S-Tronic models.

Rear-wheel drive Audi R8 heading to Frankfurt motor show

Audi has shown that a rear-wheel drive R8 is destined for the Frankfurt motor show in a new preview video

A preview video released by Audi Sport has suggested that a rear-wheel drive R8 is heading for the Frankfurt motor show next week.

The clip, which shows an R8 performing donuts, is accompanied by the hashtag AudiIAA; Internationale Automobil-Ausstellung, or Frankfurt motor show.

It’ll be the first time a purely rear-wheel drive R8 has been created, and follows in the footsteps of the closely-related Lamborghini Huracan rear-wheel drive. That model ditched its LP580-2 signifier as Lamborghini seeks to simplify its naming strategy.

Since Audi made the 5.2-litre V10 the only option in the R8 lineup, it’s almost certain that the 532bhp version of the engine from the standard R8 will feature in this model. The 602bhp version from the R8 V10 Plus hasn’t been ruled out, however.

Autocar uncovered last year that the R8 would gain a new V6-engined variant, sharing its engine with the Porsche Panamera and RS4, RS5 and RS Q5. This will replace the discontinued 4.2-litre V8 which was offered in the model’s first generation. It’s unlikely that this engine will feature in the rear-drive R8, however.

The introduction of the rear-wheel drive variant will mark the fifth variant in the supercar’s lineup, although it’s not yet confirmed where the rear-wheel drive model will sit amongst the V10 coupé and Spyder, and the Plus-badged variants. It’s likely to be an entry-level offering, however.

Decals on the car’s bonnet, engine cover and roof suggest that it could be a limited-edition model, or that a special ‘Launch Edition’ could be offered.

In a video that emerged on Sunday afternoon, the wreck of an Audi TT S in Sandton, Johannesburg, is captured from all sides.

The front part of the car, housing the engine, is completely missing, with car parts strewn across the pavement. The passenger side looks completely crushed, but the driver was fortunate in that the right side of the car’s structural integrity appears to have survived the accident.

The person taking the video says the driver, believed to be a black woman, not only survived but is completely fine, not even suffering any pain.

He says she was able to get out of the car on her own and call emergency services.

“She’s in the hospital. Yeah, man. This really shows you that God lives.”

The particular details of the crash are not known.

Wow unbelievable, the speed must have been pretty fast and luck is on her side.

Audi teases tail-happy rear-wheel drive R8

Audi has teased an Audi R8 doing some doughnuts which suggests a rear-wheel drive variant.

The Audi R8 is a supercar that is well known for its grippy quattro all-wheel drive system but a recent teaser from the German manufacturer’s Instagram page suggests that the mid-engined V10 performance car may go rear-wheel drive.

The video is short but it shows the R8 doing something an all-wheel drive car might struggle with; a smoking doughnut. This teaser doesn’t come with any audio from the car which means it’s difficult for us to guess what engine is behind the rear seats. There is a shot of the engine as the R8 exits the frame but the image is too blurry for us to confirm if it is the naturally aspirated 5,2-litre V10.

Seeing as the Audi R8 and Lamborghini Huracan share the same platform it may to safe to anticipate a 426 kW and 540 N.m of torque variant of the 10-cyinder FSI (as found in the rear-wheel drive Huracan) to make its way into this model.

Given that Audi has confirmed an entry-level R8 with the twin-turbo 2,9-litre V6 currently found in the RS5, it could also be safe to assume that the video above is a teaser for this model.

An official announcement is expected to be made during the course of this week’s Frankfurt Motor Show.

Limited production-run RWD R8? Sounds like a plan!

Audi R8 V10 RWS

The Audi Sport GmbH is extending its R8 model series to include a new derivative with rear-wheel drive. The Audi R8 V10 RWS comes in a limited series of 999 units with both Coupé and Spyder variants. It will be rear-driven (Rear Wheel Series) and be built exclusively by hand at the Böllinger Höfe R8 factory.

"The R8 V10 RWS is made for purists," said Stephan Winkelmann, CEO of Audi Sport GmbH. "A limited-edition special model for customers with an appreciation for essential driving enjoyment, the R8 V10 RWS is an absolutely exclusive offer. With its mid-mounted V10 engine and rear-wheel drive, it successfully brings the driving concept of our R8 LMS racing car to the streets."

Matt black design elements, optional films

The puristic character of the new R8 variant is underscored by the matt black grille of the Singleframe and the matt black air apertures at the front and rear of the car. The upper sideblade (of the Coupé) is finished in gloss black, the lower blade in the body color. Similar to the R8 LMS GT 4, the Coupé is available with an optional red film running over the hood, roof and rear end. Inside, the driver and passenger sit in sport seats covered in leather and Alcantara. Bucket seats are available as an option. The dashboard bears an emblem "1 of 999," indicating the limited number of units.

5.2 FSI engine - one of the last naturally aspirated engines in its segment

The mid-mounted V10 engine of the Audi R8 V10 RWS produces 397 kW (540 hp). It delivers its peak torque of 540 Nm (398.3 lb-ft) at 6,500 rpm. The 5.2 FSI engine accelerates the Coupé from 0 to 100 km/h (0 - 62.1 mph) in 3.7 seconds (Spyder: 3.8 seconds) and beyond to a top speed of 320 km/h (198.8 mph) (Spyder: 318 km/h [197.6 mph]). With the top closed, average fuel consumption of the R8 V10 RWS is 12.4 liters per 100 kilometers (19.0 US mpg), corresponding to 283 grams CO2 per kilometer (455.4 g/mi). With the top open, these figures are 12.6 liters (18.7 US mpg) and 286 grams CO2 per kilometer (460.3 g/mi).

Specially tuned chassis setup allows controlled drifts

The Coupé weights 1,5090 kilograms (3,505.3 lb) (without driver). 50 kilograms (110.2 lb) less than the R8 Coupé with all-wheel drive which needs additional components like propshaft, multi-plate clutch and center differential. The Spyder is 40 kilograms (88.2 lb) lighter than the R8 Spyder V10, weighing in at 1,680 kilograms (3,703.8 lb) (without driver). The axle load distribution of 40.6:59.4 (Coupé) and 40.4:59.6 (Spyder) together with chassis and handling tuning specially adapted for rear-wheel drive provide for incredibly fun driving.

The chassis setup and control systems allow controlled drifts if the driver chooses "dynamic" mode in the standard Audi drive select dynamic handling system and sets the Stabilization Control ESC to "Sport". The ESC intervenes reliably at the limit. The electromechanical power steering is completely free of torque steer and enables precise handling. The Audi R8 V10 RWS rolls standard on black-finished, 19-inch, cast aluminum wheels in a five-spoke V-design, with 245/35 tires up front and 295/35 at the rear.

The Audi R8 V10 RWS will be available for order in Germany and other european countries from autumn 2017, and from the beginning of 2018 the first units will hit the streets. The Coupé starts at 140,000 euros, the Spyder at 153,000 euros.

532bhp Audi R8 V10 RWS is model's first rear-drive variant

Limited edition 199mph R8 V10 unveiled at Frankfurt show is based on race car and designed for 'purists'

Audi Sport has launched a new lightweight version of the R8 V10 that swaps the quattro four-wheel drive system of the standard model for a new rear-wheel-drive set-up mirroring that of the company’s R8 LMS race car.

Unveiled on the eve of the Frankfurt motor show, the new R8 V10 RWS (denoting rear-wheel standard drive) is planned to be produced in a limited run of 999 examples in both coupé and open-top Spyder bodystyles. The UK order book for the new model is planned to open during the fourth-quarter of 2017, with deliveries due to get unde rway early next year.

“The R8 V10 RWS is made for purists - a limited edition model for customers with an appreciation for essential driving enjoyment,” said Audi Sport boss Stephen Winkelmann. "With a V10 engine and rear-wheel drive, it brings the driving concept of our R8 LMS racing car to the street."

Power for the R8 V10 RWS comes from the same mid-rear-mounted, naturally aspirated 5.2-litre V10 petrol engine used by the R8 V10 quattro. It produces 532bhp at 6800rpm and 398lb ft at 6500rpm.

The deletion of the propshaft and drive system within the front axle saves 50kg, endowing the coupé version of the new Audi Sport model with a kerb weight of 1590kg and a corresponding power-to-weight ratio of 335bhp per tonne.

By comparison, the 1640kg R8 V10 quattro coupé boasts 324bhp per tonne.

Despite the reduction in weight and a superior power-to-weight ratio, the rear-wheel-drive R8 V10 RWS can’t match its four-wheel-drive sibling for outright acceleration. Its claimed 0-62mph time of 3.6sec is 0.2sec off that of the R8 V10 quattro in coupé guise, but at a claimed 199mph, the new model matches the existing R8 for top speed.

A series of subtle styling tweaks help to set the R8 V10 RWS apart from the R8 V10 quattro, includeing a matt black grille insert and air vents up front. The upper section of the car’s so-called sideblade is also finished in gloss black, with the lower section in body colour – a treatment similar to that seen on the R8 LMS GT4. Buyers can also specify a visual package consisting of red stripes across the bonnet, roof and rear in the coupé.

Inside, the rear-wheel-drive model comes with standard sport seats in leather and Alcantara. It also receives an emblem denoting its build number.

The chassis and steering system of the R8 V10 RWS has been reworked in line with the switch to rear-wheel drive. It rides on standard 19in wheels shod with 245/35 front and 295/35 rear tyres.

In Germany, the R8 V10 RWS is priced at €140,00 for the coupé (£128,000) and €153,300 (£140,000) for the Spyder. UK pricing was not available at the time of writing.

Audi's rear-wheel drive supercar: R8 V10 RWS

Audi Sport is extending its R8 model series to include new derivatives with rear-wheel drive. Limited to 999 units globally, the Audi R8 V10 RWS and R8 Spyder V10 RWS will be exclusively rear-driven (Rear Wheel Series). It will be revealed at the 2017 Frankfurt motor show today.

Design and engine

The new R8 variant has a matt black grille and black air vents at the front and rear. The upper sideblade (of the Coupe) is finished in gloss black, the lower blade in body colour.

Similar to the R8 LMS GT 4, the Coupé is available with an optional red accents along the bonnet, roof and rear. Inside, the driver and passenger sit in sport seats covered in leather and Alcantara. Bucket seats are available as an option.

The dashboard bears an emblem “1 of 999,” indicating the limited number of units.

The mid-mounted V10 engine of the Audi R8 V10 RWS produces 397kW and 540Nm. The 5.2 FSI engine powers the Coupé from 0 to 100km/h in 3.7sec (Spyder: 3.8 seconds) and beyond to a top speed of 320km/h (Spyder: 318km/h).

Specially tuned chassis setup allows controlled drifts

The Coupé weighs 1590kg, 50kg less than the R8 Coupé with all-wheel drive which needs additional components like propshaft, multi-plate clutch and centre differential. The Spyder is 40kg lighter than the R8 Spyder V10, weighing in at 1680kg.

The chassis setup and control systems allow controlled drifts if the driver chooses “dynamic” mode in the standard Audi drive select dynamic handling system and sets the Stabilisation Control ESC to “Sport”. The ESC intervenes reliably at the limit. The electromechanical power steering is completely free of torque steer and enables precise handling.

The Audi R8 V10 RWS is fitted as standard with black-finished, 19, cast aluminium wheels in a five-spoke V-design, with 245/35 tyres up front and 295/35 at the rear.

Audi R8 goes Rear-Wheel Drive with RWS version

All R8s are quattros, right? Not anymore, Audi's introduced its supercar with rear-wheel drive. What's special about it?

It's called the Audi R8 V10 RWS and it's limited to just 999 units. Both coupe and spyder convertible derivatives will be made available. Visually, it's different to the standard Audi R8 with the addition of matte black detailing, but the real difference lies in the rear-wheel drive setup.

It's a radical departure from the strict "we are quattro" ethos which Audi has adhered to with its sportscars and ex-Lambo boss Stephan Winkelmann, CEO of Audi Sport said, "a limited-edition special model for customers with an appreciation for driving enjoyment, the R8 V10 RWS is an absolutely exclusive offer. With its mid-mounted V10 engine and rear-wheel drive, it brings the driving concept of our R8 LMS racing car to the streets."

Power comes from a 397 kW and 540 Nm naturally-aspirated V10 engine. It'll sprint to 100 kph in a claimed 3.7 seconds for the coupe, while the spyder is 0.1 seconds slower. Both derivatives can achieve top speeds in excess of 300 kph.

For the driving purists, the rear-wheel drive setup now means that some drifting action is now possible. If the driver selects Dynamic mode, controlled drifts are possible with the electronic stability control (ESC) only stepping in at the limit. Deliveries of the R8 RWS will commence at the beginning of 2018. At this stage, it's unknown if the Audi R8 RWS is confirmed for South African introduction, however.

IT’S OFFICIAL! AUDI SPORT REVEALS REAR-WHEEL-DRIVE R8

Yes, the rumours were true. Audi Sport has indeed built a rear-wheel-drive version of its R8, revealing the limited edition model at the Frankfurt Motor Show.

Limited to just 999 units worldwide, the newcomer will be offered in two forms: the R8 V10 RWS and the R8 Spyder V10 RWS. For the record, that three-letter suffix stands for “Rear Wheel Series”.

The Ingolstadt automaker has opted to stick with its silky smooth, naturally aspirated 5,2-litre mid-mounted V10, which produces a familiar 397 kW and 540 N.m in RWS guise (leaving the 449 kW V10 Plus coupé at the very summit of the range). That translates to claimed 0-100 km/h times of 3,7 seconds for the coupé and 3,8 seconds for the soft-top. Top speeds, meanwhile, come in at 319 km/h and 317 km/h, respectively.

Audi says the new model’s “specially tuned chassis setup” allows for “controlled drifts”. In addition, without the added weight of an all-wheel-drive system, the coupé tips the scales at 1 590 kg, which is about 50 kg less than the four-paw version. The Spyder V10 RWS, in turn, is around 40 kg lighter than the Spyder V10, weighing in at 1 680 kg. The Audi R8 V10 RWS is fitted as standard with five-spoke, 19-inch black alloys, with 245/35 tyres up front and 295/35 at the rear.

“The R8 V10 RWS is made for purists,” said Stephan Winkelmann, outgoing CEO of Audi Sport. “A limited-edition special model for customers with an appreciation for essential driving enjoyment, the R8 V10 RWS is an absolutely exclusive offer. With its mid-mounted V10 engine and rear-wheel drive, it successfully brings the driving concept of our R8 LMS racing car to the streets.”

This limited edition variant is visually set apart by matt black treatment for the grille and air apertures at the front and rear of the car. The upper sideblade of the coupé, meanwhile, is finished in gloss black, with the lower blade in the body colour.

The coupé version is furthermore available with an optional red film running over the bonnet, roof and rear end. Inside, the driver and passenger sit in sport seats covered in leather and Alcantara, although bucket seats will be offered as an option.

No word yet on whether any of the 999 units are destined for South Africa.

Audi reveals 'sideways special' RWD-only R8 RWS

It may come as a bit of a surprise that a brand such as Audi, which prides itself on high performance cars with quattro all-wheel drive, would develop a special edition model with power delivered to the rear wheels only. But indeed it has, with a new limited edition R8 RWS.

It’s important to remember, however, that the fleet of of R8 LMS and GT4 race cars doing duty on tracks around the world are rear-wheel driven (despite quattro insignias), as per modern touring car rules. So, technically speaking, the RWS is the closest thing any road-going civilian will get to driving a slick-shod fire-breather like the one South African driver Kelvin van der Linde took to victory at this year’s Nurburgring 24 Hour race.

The R8 RWS (Rear Wheel Series) is limited to just 999 units, which are split between Coupe and Spyder variants. Audi South Africa says the car is under consideration for our market, but if it arrives it would be in extremely limited numbers.

Power comes from the same 5.2-litre V10 as used in the current non-Plus R8 Coupe quattro, with 397kW and 540Nm. Performance figures are quoted at 3.7 and 3.8 seconds for the Coupe and Spyder respectively in 0-100km/h tests, while top speeds are pegged at 320 and 318km/h.

The traction disadvantage does play a role off the line, but hardly as much as you’d think: the RWS’s quattrified siblings accelerate to 100km/h just two tenths quicker. Top speeds are identical.

The deletion of a propshaft, centre differential and front axle means a 50 kilogram drop in kerb weight to 1509kg and of course, without drive to the front it’s now much easier to get the R8 into a proper sideways powerslide - or, as Audi prefers, “controlled drifts”.

The RWS is far less racy in appearance than its LMS counterparts, with body-coloured side blades, relatively small 19-inch rims and a small retractable spoiler just behind the rear engine cover. It can be optionally spiced up though, with the same red decal job as the GT4 club racer. Inside, the seats are covered in leather and alcantara, and a plaque reading “1 of 999” is stuck to the dashboard.

Lamborghini developed a similar creation in 2010, when the Italian brand’s chief test driver, Valentino Balboni, requested a limited run of 250 Gallardos in rear-wheel drive. All Gallardo types until that point (and there were many) were all-wheel drive only, as that car shared its platform with the first generation Audi R8.

The Gallardo 550-2 Balboni edition is now highly sought after by collectors, just as the R8 RWS will probably be in a decade’s time
