There are quite some RS6 C5 on offer at the moment and as I got one a year ago, I thought I hand over some learning experiences.
Should you buy one? Absolutely! I am more a old Porsche fan, restored 2 from scratch.. but ran last year into a RS6 C5 Avant, when I was looking to replace my old station wagon. Car was inside and outside scratch less and when I compared to Europe, rather a bargain to get. So I bought it. Did I regret it? I would say still on the positive side.
If you buy one, drive it till warm on oil.. not water temp.. and check to get some corners. Is in most cases enough to convince you. Check the turbo duct silicon hoses, they crumble, car didn't had a good service for a very long time. Check the breaks and in any case check the suspension, after 15 years, the DRC is gone, question is what was it replaced with, still the original on... mhhh take the price for some good coil overs off the price. There is no rattle or squeak coming from anywhere inside while driving. Open the sunroof (if it has one), try all the different settings and see how it runs. No nasty sounds, good sign. The steering should be butter soft, it goes hard.. pump is gone within the next 5k km.. the timing belt must get exchanged all 5 years or 75k km.. check that in the service history, no history, take a walk. And just to remind you, if the radiator just drips a little bit, we talk a 27k replacement part. Some parts you have to get to fix it, will make you dizzy. Beside you buy a rocket ship, and if you drive it like a rocket ship, it will eat petrol and tires.. C5 is still the lightest of the RS6 series.. 1860kg empty.
If this didn't scare you, I would suggest to have about 75-100k a year for maintenance ready. I might have been a bit unlucky, but there is just enough tech to break. 15 year old car tells you when the tires need replacing, air pressure for each tire, if low. And because you run 255 drums, you pick up ever key and nail with your back tires. Set of tires.. you don't want to go cheap

but 15k up.
The good news is, if you use Audi SA mainly as OEM No supplier, you can keep your parts cost rather down, when you buy and import yourself. Quite some stores in Europe and US offer genuine parts, same as you get from Audi SA.. just cheaper, as they empty their stocks. No, doesn't count for the 4B3121251F ^^ if you search this radiator and read this.. go to Audi.. pay the 27K.. I couldn't find any and imported 2 declared as F but were D versions. Rest, I always got what fitted the car, when shopping for parts.. if you look, you get away with 40-60% less of the cost.. ok, you will have to endure Post Office service. No joke, even importing the break rotors with Fedex Priority is cheaper as from Audi SA
Your normal Hilux mechanic will not do... actually it will make it more expensive. You bring the car to build in the new Racing Intercoolers and it comes back with a leaking radiator, due to rough handling. Some more broke.. main vent.. and all costs rather a lot for the RS6.. S6 or below, you get most standard, but not for the RS models. So yeah, you will pay a bit more for the mechanics.. and is worth it!
Not looking for a daily driver.. just the best Sleeper there is? C5 is for you.. I expect you are still reading and I didn't scared you off before. Every time I sit in the car and start it, I get a smile in my face. I removed the RS6 tags.. and now it looks like a Audi.. with a little more. Changed Air intake to 100% more flow, intercoolers to 100% more flow and 50% colder air and the exhaust got straight 78mm downpipes made in the UK for best flow.
Stage 2 from Germany, tuned over the Internet from a guy sitting at the Nuerburgring. 300 Euro.. just had to do the dyno runs, while he was connected to the car over the web. Love technology.. haven't lost a robot race yet
The cars you find on Gumtree.. always read out the chip and check, if the mileage makes sense, cars log running times and average speed.. if they dont make sense with what you have on the clock, take a walk. If there are oil drips under the car.. can be a 1000R fix or your living nightmare. I had the car now 12 months and had for about 2 months no issue at all ^^ Latest was the nut from the suspension front left control rod came off. I get that bill tomorrow, new arm, cv joint. I knew they replaced the DRC with a non generic DRC in my car.. I still have on the list to put a KW variant 2 in.. just didn't came to it yet.. and yeah.. happy I didn't totaled the car, because of a self locking nut some moron reused.
So.. should you buy one? If you have the wallet to maintain it, you get a unbelievable fun toy.. acceleration I got for 165k, you will get.. is just mind boggling. Uhh and yeah.. the car needs 98 octane minimum.. so your fuel will cost a little more. I put 60 liter 95 (and you are lucky it has 95) and a 6 octane Race NFS booster.. around 200 bugs on top.. and it does... around 300km with that load, and yes, you feel the engine runs way more "bitey". Driving to town is cheaper taking a Uber.. but way less fun either.
Hope it might help somebody... very! fun car the RS6 C5.. just nasty on the wallet.
--------------------------added later------
I should add what I did during the year I had it.
When I got it last March, I knew that the timing belt was up. Car was only documented till 100k from Audi Waterfront. Last 50k it got done by a back yard garage. But for 165k Rand, 9k Euro and in Germany a comparable car with condition and mileage is over 20k Euro. Gave a bit spare room to play with before it is a bad buy.
Timing Belt replacement gear came from the US.. just selected the biggest bundle including even the sticker, with water pump and the 300$ power steering pump, was 900$ with shipping.
Got new CV boots for 3 spots.. also from the US too.
Change the air filters and the race intercoolers (wagner), they were a bit pricey with 2700 Euro.
Downpipes from the UK I got shipped to Germany and took them with me on the way back.. zero import fees. Also took the screws with for the front left fender. Audi SA got me the fender, but couldn't provide the screws to fit the car. I scratched it.. outside, inside must be as perfect as the OK on the screen, when you start the car.. I rather enjoy taking care of it.
Payed 160 Pounds with shipping for both downpipes, was also the only way, they don't ship to SA.
MAF sensor needed replacement too.. came from the UK.
Oil level sensor (That is the cheap version when you have oil below the car). Got that from the UK too, can't remember the price right now.. in any case way cheaper as here.
Radiator.. nightmare.. was December. Got it finally done mid Jan.. 27k
Main radiator vent.. Audi SA wants 18600 for it.. got a used one (awesome condition) from Lithuania.. or something like that.. 170$ plus 200$ shipping.
Right the next day after I got a none leaking car, i get in and want to have a smile drive.. not starting. The mech comes, sits in, turns the key, WRUUUMMMMM I felt bad till error read out.. P0322.. Cam shaft sensor.
Audi SA.. 2000 Rand.. UK company I paid in Germany (combos you remember).. 12$ part, 3$ shipping.. as said, not using Audi SA makes the maintenance okisch.
And last.. 3 days ago, the self locking nut.. but that isn't really the cars fault.. more the mechanic, who changed the suspension.
And those are just part prices.. still needs to get build in.. timing belt is a good 9 hours job, if the mechanic knows what he is dealing with.. and I got the Cam shaft locking tool myself... 27$ just to be sure they have the right tool. The mechanic wanted to buy it right of my hands, na, stays with the car.
Curious what it has up for me next

still love it
