The Audi Thread

I do hope you keep it for a long time. Pretty much every Audi driver I have spoken to that rant and rave about how awesome they are tend to replace them quite rapidly. Not really proving they are reliable and affordable in the long run. Maybe you can resist that :-)

Anyone in the position to would replace any car no matter the brand or model regularly. Just because they do this, does not infer that they aren't reliable or affordable in the long run. Most/all modern vehicles can go many hundreds of thousands of kilometers if maintained and serviced regularly.

This thread is for Audi/B7 enthusiasts, not for poking holes to try and make points about VAG hate. I would appreciate it if you retreat to the sideline of this thread. Any further attention seeking comments and questions will be reported.

I recently bought a B7 A4 2.0tdi avant 85000km for R110 000.

I average 7.2l / 100km town driving and I get her down to 6.2l on the open road.

Now bare in mind that I was looking at buying a car for almost an year. The main options were bmw, Mercedes and Audi. I did my fair research into this and settled for the Audi. For value for money nothing came close.

She will be serviced by an independent workshop.

Very nice, good mileage for the price. Feel free to post some pics. Indeed nothing comes close to the value of a B7.

Decent efficiency, I do 6.5 - 8L on the highway and 8 - 10L in town depending on my foot. I think it's quite good considering the aircon is always on. If I'm doing highway cruising at 80km/h for a while I can get it down to 6L and even 5.8L IIRC.

Filling up costs R850 and I get 650 - 700km.

Sorry if I hit a nerve. I am interested in a W203 or B6/B7 if they can deliver at least 200,000km of reliable and affordable motoring. Hence my participation in this thread and my hopes of having feedback from long term owners.

Plenty high mileage Audis and VWs on Gumtree from dealers presumably accepted as trade-ins.

You could also start a thread, phone Audi Centre, mechanics, etc. for more definitive answers.

Personally I plan to sell at around 125k km.

There could be many reasons for so many being on sale and I have no intention of being brainwashed by dealers. I'd much rather hear from ownerd that have first hand experience on long term ownership and what typical part replacements to expect.

There aren't that many really. My point wasn't to ask dealers, it was to show you that dealers are happy to sell high mileage ones/have them traded in. This proves there is less risk than you think there is.

Parts costs are on par with Polos and Golfs/Jettas, many are shared between these models. You can speak to an independent mechanic about this in terms of what to expect. I can tell you that my water pump and thermostat were around R2,000 total. Servicing is cheap enough too, around R2,000 for a major service. Cheaper than Mercs AFAIK.

What are you worried about going besides the usual wear and tear parts? Why would it be anything more than an Opel or another brand?

If you are wanting an upgrade over an entry Opel, and have a R100k budget and want the best bang for buck and style/comfort/luxury, you can't go wrong.

For what its worth parts etc are similar priced on polo's and audi's.
Fixing my electric window set me back R5k last year on my polo, a mate of mine had the same thing happen in his A3 and it was the same price.

Personally I am more of a Mercedes guy, but in my price range I can't take chances with maintenance costs. The waterpump and thermostat you mentioned are indeed on par with what I am used to. Labour cost and cosmetic wear and tear are the other concerns I have and that is something you only hear and see from long time owners. The B6 1.9tdi belonging to a relative of mine does show wear now that its beyond 200,000, but I'd say its still acceptable.

I've been dreaming of RS4 wheels... :(

(And 2.0L Ts...)

How much? Where?

Replicas?

I was getting 2 new tyres fitted at Mintys in Bedfordview 1.5 weeks back and saw RS8 replicas. They looked freaking identical! R6,999 if I recall correctly.
They were 18" as Audi would apparently have a fit if they did them as 19". I am all good with that.
I plan on having them fitted at my next tyre change. Current mags will go into the shed and kept.

On reliability posts (don't feel like quoting them), my previous Audi was just under 200k kms when I traded it in for my current (want - not need) and current rolled over to 165k kms yesterday on the way home from the coast. The single only issue I have is my left water jet for the windscreen has clogged up. Simple fix. I also need to get some new electric window switches for the rear doors as they are showing wear.
Average service cost is about R1,200 (don't use the dealer now that out of motor plan).

Based on my experience over 4 Audi's, I will upgrade again sometime - and it will be another Audi.

Edit: My bad. Minty has R8, not RS8 replicas. Too early in the AM.

My B5 was on 265000km when i bought my 2.0T and my B5 is still running now on 270k

Over on the audi forums there are a few guys over 200 000 with their B7's and are still running well.

I intend to drive my one till we'll over 200k

I just said this in another post - I'll change the wording here a bit as the other one was on a BMW - my opinion - Audi with AUDI motor plan / warranty or no Audi. You want bell and whistles...you need be covered for when those break cause they won't be cheap to repair or replace 90% of the time. Also...a 2.0L naturally aspirated engine will be heavier on fuel than a 2.0L turbo engine if driven normally.

Hope this helps.

Please..

I've owned BMW's and Mercedes and Audi's without motorplans and been quite fine...

They just need to be maintained properly and serviced regularly.

Also, should something big go whilst you are under motor plan, you can watch the dealerships start jumping through hoops to not pay for it, I've seen it happen too often.

It all depends on where you go to service it... One thing for certain is that I'll never go to Merc Grand Central Motors.... They actually sabotaged one of our cars while under maintenance plan (the stepped one so we would still have to pay)

FYI, an example of high mileage Audis. My friend sold his B5 A4 (I think it was a 1.8) for R40k recently. 280,000km on the clock.

Clearly you have never owned an Audi or BMW.

They are fine if you look after them and maintain them as Toxic said.

+1. Only my latest (the fourth) had motor plan from Audi (expired end 2012). Never felt the need to be concerned. All 4 have treated me well and even though my current A6 has no plan left, I am holding on to her. Superb cars.
