Okay I have found a very good ideal in my opinion. Going for a test drive tomorrow - found a true beauty! A4 1.8T FSI 2012 facelift model with VERY low mileage on.

Be careful that you aren't buying someone else's oil guzzler.

Forgive my ignorance but I thought this issue was mainly related to the 2.0T engine?

Other way round I believe.

It's more the 1.8T and then some 2.0T's as well.

Everyone I know who had the problem has a 1.8T. Then there is also StrontiumDog on this very forum currently fighting the fight with Audi SA.

Well that is not very good news then. I am hoping the car I'm looking at will be free from this or hopefully had it resolved by previous owner if it had any issues. The car is actually being sold by an Audi dealership but I think it would probably be best if I can contact the original seller and ask him/her.

If it has any oil issues I will be absolutely gutted!

Interesting. I had major oil problems with my 2.0T. On my second 1.8T, and not a day's problems with either.

Well from what I have found on the internet it does seem like a hit and miss situation with not all engines affected. I would presume the earlier models have a higher probability of having this issue.

The fact that the car I am going for is a manual, I am also hoping to save a bit on maintenance cost as have read how costly it can be should the multitronic gearbox give any issues.

Depends on model year.

But I seem to recall 2012 was one of the bad years.

I must admit, I haven't read up on this in years. My first 1.8 was a 2006 model(A4, multitronic). Sold just before 100k km, no problems. Then I got an A5 with the 2.0 T, with Quattro suspension - 2011 model. It was really heavy on fuel, partly due to the heavier suspension, but the oil was the worst. I used to have 5l of oil in my boot, especially if we went on holiday to somewhere I might not be able to get oil. Sold it at about 30k km, it was really too expensive to maintain.

Now I have an A6 with the new 1.8T. 30k km, and no issues so far. Pleasure to drive, normal oil consumption, enough power and pretty good fuel consumption to boot. And speaking of boot - it's HUGE!

Perhaps if I do go ahead with my purchase it would be wise to get them to agree to an oil consumption test before I buy it. That is now if it isn't clear from service history etc whether this car has the oil issue.

You have to travel 1000km to get results from an oil consumption test, but perhaps you could get some kind of assurance from them that it should not exceed Audi's acceptable oil consumption which is 500ml per 1000km, which is still not acceptable though in many people's eyes.

Details on the issue is described here: www.a5oc.com/forums/a5-general-q/90849-2-0-tfsi-oil.html
which is in line with what Niner relayed on his A5 experience.

The issue is supposed to have been fixed in Q4 of 2011 for the affected engine models (certain 1.8T and 2.0T engine codes).

If they don't sort me out then when the time is right I will be updating my signature so everyone can know about their shady ethics and I'll be contacting Wendy Knowler the consumer journalist about the story. There are many Audi owners affected by this, though percentage wise I wouldn't know. At least a couple PM'ed me recently about this asking for advice.

Does anybody here know more or less what a 1 year with 15000km/20000km warranty extension would be on a Audi RS5?

What are Audi thinking with this horrendous ad?

For those interested I just got the numbers from an Audi dealership. They charge separately for a year extension and km extension. For just 1 year motorplan extension I was quoted R27,000. To add a 20000km extension it is about R45,000.

Thanks that was actually quite a good/informative read.

After I went for a test drive today, I discussed the oil issue with the dealership and they are aware of this and said they have had very few issue and will do what they can to assist.

I went through the service booklet and nothing looked out of the ordinary. I have also got the engine number/code to check against those listed in your link above. Luckily it is not one of those. Also have the VIN number. The car has a 1 year maintenance plan and 2 year warranty on it which makes me feel a lot better.

This car is in CPT but someone in JHB has shown interest and potentialy put in an offer to purchase. I am seriously hoping I can get this car! I have put in an offer to purchase in the meantime, should the other offer not happen.

Kind of a no brainer then - those high performance parts are mighty $$$. Just a service with brakes will cost you R15k + i'm guessing.
