Cambelt on those cars is usually at 180,000km according to the manual but most mechanics just follow their own logic and replace it at 120,000km anyway.

Diesels also have valves and hence cambelts with similar wear characteristics. I have also heard cambelt every 60k is preferable on Vag vehicles, that can get a little pricey on some engines though but better than a stuffed motor.

That's the thing a mechanic will have one car in a hundred that failed at 60k and then decide that now all cars should get it at 60k.

Meanwhile back in Deutschland it's been R&D'd for 180,000km or whatever the book says.

Even mine was done at 170,000km because the mechanic was irrational about it with no sign of wear.

Like you say though rather safe than sorry, but I've had a cambelt go literally 20,000km after it was replaced so then one might as well argue it should be done at every major service.

The phone is just translating it through normal voice channels I would imagine so to the car it's one and the same really just passing microphone and headphone input along.

What happens when you try to play music? Just nothing?

Remind me what car it is and what head unit then I can check.
It's a late 2010 (VIN indicates MY 2011) A3 1.8T Ambition S-tronic with some of the extras being multi-purpose steering wheel, paddleshifts, BT, Symphony Sound & Bose speakers and iPod dock.

Yeah nothing happens when i play music. When I check my phone I see the following regardless of whether the phone is paired or not with the car's BT:Audi UHV 1232 20180112-2049 50%.jpg
 
And I'm guessing the dock is the old connector as well?

Well the dock is essentially that which fits the iPod Nano 3rd gen connector. The iPod dock setup in the cubby hole came with different attachments so can take a full sized iPod too and others AFAIK.

Usually a visual inspection is carried out to determine the state of the belt around 90k and/or 120k km. As far as I can remember, South Africa is considered a country with high dust levels, so our service intervals for a belt will be lower than Germany for example. As for changing it every 60k km, is probably overkill and a waste of money. Like you said, sometimes they just fail prematurely.
 
Cambelt manufacturers guarentee their belts. Some offer full service life and others only 60k km or what ever is specified. I change mine when the service book says. If it fails prematurely then the workshop needs to claim and not pass the cost on to you. Most premature failures are incorrect belt tension or worn idler pulleys. Once in a while a warped camshaft or a bit of overheating damaged the shaft bearing journals.
There is always something that causes a failure. It is not very often that a belt just fails without any help.
 
I wonder how the Nardo grey will look if you plasti-dip your car? A dude in my complex plasti-dipped his black RS3 in royal blue... looks cool but there was definitely nothing wrong with his RS3 in black!
