Audi Sport division to go electric, build more SUVs

The Audi Sport division, known for its S and RS models, plans to embrace future trends by introducing electric models from the beginning of the next decade, while also expanding its portfolio of SUV models.

According to Autocar, the division will increase the number of Q derivatives that it offers as the company capitalises on the growing popularity of crossovers and SUVs.

Audi Sport’s SUV portfolio is currently limited to the SQ5 and SQ7 as well as the RS Q3.

It could easily be expanded in future, however, with racier versions of the upcoming Q4 and Q8 models, and perhaps even an SQ2 and an RS Q5 in a bid to fill just about every niche that exists.

Stephan Winkelmann, who heads Audi Sport, told Autocar that expanding its Q line-up would help the company bolster its presence in global markets, particularly in Asia and the Americas, but that this could not come at the expense of the Sport division’s core models.

Those sentiments also apply to the electrification of the Sport range, which will begin around 2020.

The first sporty EV is likely to be based on Audi’s upcoming ‘e-tron’ model that’s due to hit the market in 2018. The coupe version of this vehicle was previewed by the Audi e-tron Sportback Concept that was revealed in Shanghai earlier this year. Audi promises that the production car will have a range of over 500km, making it the company’s first truly useable full electric vehicle.

A performance-oriented electric car would allow Audi to compete with Tesla and Volvo’s new Polestar brand in what could eventually become a hotly contested market.

Hi people,

I am in the market for a used A4 between 2012 and 2015, preferably below 100 000km, with a budget of ±200k. What model is the safest to buy with the least common faults. I am starting to get a liking in these cars but I am a bit scared of any hidden issues which I do not want to discover after the effect. TIA

2.0T and 2.0TDI are the safest motors to buy, stay away from the multitronic gearbox.

honestly, new to cape town and been driving it. Im pretty much near dead centre with most places about 30mins away. If they are a good and reputable place I wouldnt mind the drive. Just looking for someone really solid that can sort the problem and give my car a full once over.

Audi ditches 'Russian doll' car design

As the brand is now recognised in emerging markets such as China, Audi now has the ability to differentiate its models

Audi is ditching the ‘Russian doll’ design philosophy it has become synonymous with in order to give upcoming models more defined looks.

Like its German rivals Mercedes and BMW, the Ingolstadt car maker’s designers have in recent years employed a technique of consistency across the bulk of its line-up. However, since the launch of the Q2, model designs have become more varied.

“This [repetition] design process was used to make Audis more recognisable in newer and emerging markets like China,” explained the company’s chief executive, Rupert Stadler. “Now we are well known in China, we can begin to change this philosophy and give each car its own look.”

Design boss Marc Lichte added: “We recognise that there is a place for more differentiation now. Since our cars are in production for a minimum of six years, in today’s world I think each model should have its own design to be attractive for this long time.”

Lichte believes the biggest step forward for design at Audi will come when the marque launches more electric cars after the E-tron quattro SUV, which is due on roads next year.

He said that the more compact dimensions of electric powertrains means “proportions can change” for the better.

“Design will go in a very different way,” Lichte continued. “[Designers] will have more material space to play with, so we’ll be able to produce [vehicles with] shorter overhangs and lower bonnets. It makes for a more attractive design overall.”

Audi Says Its Cars Will No Longer Look Alike

A common criticism we see on our comments section when we report on a new Audi reveal is that the design philosophy of the German manufacturer makes all of its cars look alike. This is a criticism that Audi has apparently taken to heart as Autocar reports that it will be doing away with its ‘Russian doll’ tactic.

This is something that it made somewhat apparent with the launch of the Q2 which does visually deviate itself from other models in the line-up. Audi’s head of design Marc Lichte says that its initial reasoning behind assimilating its line-up design was to make the brand more recognisable in emerging markets such as China. Now that the brand has more of a presence there, Lichte feels that his department can now experiment a bit more with regards to design.

Lichte also stated that Audi’s new electrified models after the E-tron SUV will big step forward with regards to design seeing that the compact dimensions of electric powertrains give the designers more room to play with. This means that future models will adopt shorter overhangs, lower bonnets and more cabin room while maintaining an attractive design.

Hi all, need some advise. I'm looking at buying a 2012 Audi A5 2.0Tdi sportback multitronic, it has 110 000km on the clock but is going for a very good price from a dealer which is rare, hence my question.

How reliable are the multitronic gearboxes and what would I be looking at cost wise for the next service, I'm guessing it's at 120 000km.

Other than that the car is very clean.

I think they have to change the gearbox’s oil at 120k kms.

Not sure of the cost and it depends of the models.

If the box is not good, they will have to change it though, so maybe get a specific warranty from the dealer regarding that (that they will bear the cost should it happen).

In the newer ones with the MMI, you can .

In the previous ones without MMI, I have looked many times but could never find a way.

With reference to the adding-Bluetooth-audio-to-car-radio thread, if an Audi has BT that you can connect to for making phone calls, is it possible (or if not why not) to play other audio via BT from one's smartphone to the car audio?

You can, but making calls over blutooth uses the hands free profile which came out with Bluetooth 1.0 and is therefore very limited in bandwidth. Playing audio over it will sound like playing audio over a telephone.

For good audio quality you need the Advanced Audio Distribution Profile (A2DP) which came out with Bluetooth 2.1 and allows for hi-fi sound.

I'm toying with the idea of adding the A2DP module to my car (not an Audi though).

On BMW there actual device required for it, you can buy it and retro fit on bmw. On Canadian cars they all had the device fitted, just not wired up and coded.
Not sure if it same on audi.
