The Audi Thread

My matrix headlights stopped working after the last service at Audi. According to the technician it is because I have a aftermarket windscreen installed and then they quoted me 18k for a new windscreen. I explained to them it was the same windscreen that I've had in the car since I got it and the matrix lights have been workign for 2+ years. Now they are getting Audi Germany involved because the technician admitted that he doesn't really know what was causing it but he thinks it might be the windscreen.

I've also had an experience where I had issues after a service. Never the happy ending you hope for when picking up your car.

Good luck with getting it sorted, I'm sure if you stand firm they will come to the table. It sjust not acceptable for them/technician to not take some responsibility.

Thoughts on a 2018 A5 40tsi. 66k km.
Considering I do low mileage, I am considering spending 10k per year on extending motorplan with Audi.

I extended my Q7’s motor plan by 3 years. And currently doing the self insured way.

Read the fine print on the motorplan (as in R10000 dont cover alot). Lets say the engine goes, what then?

My advice, pull all info from audi self before buying. (As in car’s history etc)

The Freeway plan covers everything mechanical. Tyres and cosmetic items are not covered.

I am saying it again, if the engine goes, look what it would cost to replace. Mine at that stage only covered R45k for an engine, but new it was R110k

I realized if I needed to claim, what do I need to pay from my side.

Just another note, if you dont use the car alot, it comes with 2 year or 60k km (which ever comes firms).

Lastly, get a quote from bidvest as well

Wife has the a3, they said it’s 10k to extend time.
They also said it is same freeway plan, so I assume it will cover everything.
Never extend it as yet, still time. Will look at the t&c

I recently extended my A4 Freeway Plan by an additional 2 years and my understanding is also that there are no limits for mechanical claims. Aftermarket warranties and maintenance plans however do have these limits and that is one reason why they are so much cheaper than the Audi Freeway or BMW Motorplans.

You can't compare the Freeway plan to a third party warranty. Everything is included and there are no additional payments.

The benefits of the Audi Freeway Plan include:

- 24 hour Audi Assist roadside assistance
- No hidden costs
- No limit in terms of claim value
- No limit in terms of individual parts
- Highly trained Audi technicians
- Audi Genuine Parts (with a 2 year warranty)
- Protection of residual value
- Protection from parts inflation – no additional costs
- Safety, performance, reliability

Audi Freeway plan

So just to confirm, if I extend the freeway plan, can go to 10 years, everything is covered.
It’s not like Motorite, which is much cheaper, but has limits?
That’s my premise of buy an older a5 as I can extend the freeway plan up to 10 years and not worry about breakdowns

Yes, everything is covered. Brake pads, windshield wipers etc. Only tyres and cosmetic trim is not covered.

For some indication of price of extending the freeway plan - Audi A3 1.4 was quoted R39k for extension of 2 years / and up to 120,000km (this quote was issued in 2020).

Yep, sounds right as it’s mileage that’s expensive.
10k per year to extend on time and 20k on time and mileage.
I am doing < 10k Km per year hence not looking at extending mileage

Reminds me the time I had the similar warranty on my GTI, they told me they changed rear brake pads only after the warranty expired and when i was doing the next set of brake pads I realised they lied as the rear ones had the date stamped on them and it was the year the car was manufactured

Did they charge for it? It should reflect on the vehicle's maintenance history if you can get the print-out. Audi VW SA pays for it (I imagine) so if they billed for it but never did the work then I would think there would be hell to pay if Audi VW SA were to find out.

It was on the invoice copy I got , so the dealer charged the warranty but never replaced the pads for some reason, could have been human error or direct unethical behavior.

Xposted from the Fuel Consumption thread as posted by me. I took the A4 in to have, initially, only valve stem seals replaced. It ended up a much bigger job:

Ag, basically it turns out that the guy who previously worked on the engine patched it enough for it to run for a while, because there was absolute carnage inside it when it was stripped. There was also evidence of it being worked on quite recently before I took ownership as per my mecchie, and also evidence of the car being overheated many times prior to me taking ownership of it. Surprisingly it ran well up until...it didn't.

It went in for valve stem seals and carbon cleaning, but that snowballed. Here's what was replaced/repaired with a little story of how it happened.

The valve stem seals were replaced as the old ones were hard and leaking oil. Then it was found that the valve guides were ovalled due to the head which had metal contamination inside which chewed up the journals as well as the camshafts, which were badly gouged and worn from metallic debris stemming from the oil pump, which seized up due to a locked up balancing assembly, which also ripped the crankshaft sprocket off and broke the teeth and seized the chain. The oil consumption also caused detonation so the pistons, rings, gudgeon pins, bearings and conrods were also replaced, but then they found that the bore was oval so it had to be machined and rehoned. The oil filter housing is also busted and was leaking, so that was replaced, as well as a heater hose running from the back of the car that was held on with Pratley epoxy. They also polished the crank but it was still in good enough condition, and it was basically the only part in the entire engine that was still in workable condition.

I did consider dropping in another engine, but either way, I would have been out the same amount of cash, but going the repair route I know that the engine's weak points are addressed (seizing balancing shaft, incorrect spec oil control rings, hollow camshafts) and I have a 5-year warranty on the workmanship vs 90 days for an import engine.

To satisfy my own curiosity I called Audi and asked them for a price on a head for the car, which came to just over R89k + exchange. Needless to say I did not pursue that route at all.
