The Audi Thread

Xposted from the Fuel Consumption thread as posted by me. I took the A4 in to have, initially, only valve stem seals replaced. It ended up a much bigger job:

Ag, basically it turns out that the guy who previously worked on the engine patched it enough for it to run for a while, because there was absolute carnage inside it when it was stripped. There was also evidence of it being worked on quite recently before I took ownership as per my mecchie, and also evidence of the car being overheated many times prior to me taking ownership of it. Surprisingly it ran well up until...it didn't.

It went in for valve stem seals and carbon cleaning, but that snowballed. Here's what was replaced/repaired with a little story of how it happened.

The valve stem seals were replaced as the old ones were hard and leaking oil. Then it was found that the valve guides were ovalled due to the head which had metal contamination inside which chewed up the journals as well as the camshafts, which were badly gouged and worn from metallic debris stemming from the oil pump, which seized up due to a locked up balancing assembly, which also ripped the crankshaft sprocket off and broke the teeth and seized the chain. The oil consumption also caused detonation so the pistons, rings, gudgeon pins, bearings and conrods were also replaced, but then they found that the bore was oval so it had to be machined and rehoned. The oil filter housing is also busted and was leaking, so that was replaced, as well as a heater hose running from the back of the car that was held on with Pratley epoxy. They also polished the crank but it was still in good enough condition, and it was basically the only part in the entire engine that was still in workable condition.

I did consider dropping in another engine, but either way, I would have been out the same amount of cash, but going the repair route I know that the engine's weak points are addressed (seizing balancing shaft, incorrect spec oil control rings, hollow camshafts) and I have a 5-year warranty on the workmanship vs 90 days for an import engine.

To satisfy my own curiosity I called Audi and asked them for a price on a head for the car, which came to just over R89k + exchange. Needless to say I did not pursue that route at all.
Remind us again which engine is this?

I guess I can participate in this thread now.

Bought a 2013 B8.5 S4, two months back. Really enjoying the car. Fuel consumption is higher. But I work from home and only drive weekends with the family. Wife has a MK5 GTi.

Indeed. BWE.

PB Garage has a nice video out of why the balance shafts often get deleted before they fail, and what options exist.

My balance shafts are being deleted as well, as the car doesn't run much rougher without them anyways.

Congrats dude! Those facelift B8's aged really well. My B7 has the same motor as your wife's GTi, in fact :)

I suspect I'm in for this job:

Oof, that is a big one. Looks like the cooler sits inside the valley by the looks of things? How many kilos are on the clock? If it's close to the camchain service, maybe best to pull the engine out and do both jobs at the same time vs doing that one in situ?

When I ask Audi, they say cam chains are lifetime so not sure when is the appropriate time to change them.

I think that the chain is 'lifetime' (for the lifetime of the vehicle, usually 250 - 300k km as per the manufacturer) but the issue is more the tensioners, and a lot of folks replace them as preventative maintenance. But, it is a big job as the engine has to come out.

If you don't have any rattles then you should be okay, as rattling chain guides are the telltale sign that they are packing their bags and are on their way out.

Recently did the oil cooler on my 3.0tdi...was less than 9k at my Cape mechanic...not cheap at all but if you want one of these engines it seems a common item.
Also did the gearbox oil on the ZF box which Audi claims is "lifetime" but other cars using it say 80-100kkms.

Can you break that 9k down into parts and labour please? I always do gearbox oil every 60k.

Also had to do the oil cooler on my 3.0tdi earlier this year, also did it at RMH :)

Only people I trust to work on my Audi!

EDIT:
I have the DSG box, but also elected to replace all the diff oils as I'm on around 150 000km now.

Did RMH do the diffs? What was the cost, parts and labour?

Mines a 2013 B8.5.

front diff is connected to gearbox, and from memory it uses gearbox oil.
Rear diff required special oil... was a few R.

Ask them for a quote if you are interested, I had a quote done to get an accurate cost before I committed.

Thanks. Isn't there a centre diff aswell? I thought the front and rear use the same oil and the centre uses the special stuff?
