They allow me to bring a client in and remove a portion of their commission so the price stated is negotiable as long as I bring the client in myself...

I find of easier that way. I'm allowed to advertise the car at my price as well and they do their own advertising too.

That sounds like a good deal, if they find a buyer you make a bit less but if you find one you make a bit more.

So then... After studying all my materials for today's exam my mind drifted back to cars, specifically the future (not for the industry so much, but for me).

My mind is indecisive on what would work best for me. I'm in my early twenties and quite taken with the A3, but all things considered I know I will be buying something else within the next 3 years due to various factors. So while the A3 is a great car, I'm sitting here thinking: "I'm a young single dude, what should I buy myself in a few years time (say ~25)? Should I go with what is familiar, such as a plain A3, or an A4? Should I rather go for something more sporty yet still practical, like an A5? Should I go for comfort and sensibility with the big A6? Or should I say to hell with rationality and get a good nick TTS to enjoy myself with? Or lastly, be financially sound and get a Polo or something, saving up as much as possible?" The only ones I might buy new would be a Polo full spec, or an A3, and even then only if I can't find a secondhand one with the creature comforts I would like (adaptive cruise FTW).

This is further confounded by my longer term goal of emigrating somewhere in my 30's, as an expensive ride would delay my plans considerably, yet I am a car person at the end of the day and would like something I could at least take pride in.. Sigh, hate when my mind starts going off into detail about far away possibilities.

Buy the one you truly love. If you can afford it, the one you love will make you most happy and you will probably keep it the longest and enjoy it way more than the others. Drive them all and decide from there

I'd say an A4 would be a good blend to meet your requirements for the next few years however if you plan to emigrate I'd say buy second hand as your "break even" between amount owing on finance and what you could sell for would be sooner.

Just remember you can never go back from 4 to 3 or 5 to 4. So I recommend starting with an A3. You can get excellent deals from places like Zeda on almost new ex-rentals with some decent extras. Yeah yeah, rental cars are destroyed by the renters etc. whatever. Motorplan means you don't have to worry anyway and if you get DSG it is almost impossible for somebody to destroy the car - it is all computer controlled.

Same boat. Got my Alfa when I was 24. After very nearly getting a new Cherokee (circumstances have changed - no longer single and living by my own), have decided to keep her until a decision is taken on my future, which would be within the next two years.

Had I got something more expensive, or traded for the Cherokee, I would have had to sell the car at a loss should I move.

Just consider the financial impact clearly. Sacrificing that nice new car in your early 20s for a far more financially stable period in your 30s and beyond may be worth it, especially considering the costs of emigration. I understand the draw of an amazing car when you're young enough to enjoy it properly, but weigh up just how much you're going to be investing and see if there are other ways in which that money could be better spent. Look at what a R50,000 deposit and R5,000 a month (as an example) can get you in terms of property to rent out. Consider the benefits of investing in an appreciating asset that can generate income, rather than a depreciating asset that's going to cost you.

Get a TTS/S5

Except if it's an Sx or RSx

I'd go from an A4 to S3 or A5 to S4. In all honesty the S3 Sedan is something I'd really want!

Lol advice is everywhere on this. At current prices I would not buy over 400, if that. After sleeping on it though I think I'll see how the market looks then and decide, doesn't help to worry about it too much now with all the variables.

Think I'll look for another A3 sedan though, unless the next A4 is a big upgrade. The A3 sedan seems to have more tech in than the current A4 after all, not to mention my dislike of CVT.

Maybe in a few years I'll trade in this one for a 2.0 TDI S-Tronic version with choice extras, mainly adaptive cruise and the full parking system. Should be one of the cheaper options at least.

Well - no - sell it to one of us ;)

In other words let us spec the car for you, so you can sell it faster to us. I'd like a red DSG S3, please. Get 19", better sound, dynamic suspension, sport seats and sunroof. Don't forget smash and grab with a slight tint.

Thanks man!

Have to ask. What work do you do? you're looking at R400k cars and by my estimates you're about 22..

Estimates are correct on age. However I'm planning to work for Audi next year which would allow me quite a few options for buying in house. Failing that I have a guaranteed job at a VW dealer as backup

Both of these are sales positions, both of which would allow some level of in house benefit, whether that would be a car allowance or buying at cost price.

My plans are for at 25 or later for purchase however, not now. This would allow for some savings to build up etc, and I do currently have another car owned by the family to use (not the Audi, that is family car not my car).
