Sent my A5 in for a checkup today and was given a new A3 1.4 TFSi to drive around while they had my car.
I was not impressed on hearing what they were loaning me - but damn was I impressed when I drove it. Was not expecting a 1.4 A3 to be so flipping zippy and comfortable. Really enjoyed driving out to Hartees and back in it.
Expected fuel consumption to be a lot better than my 3.2 but it wasn't much better. That stumped me. Such a small engine yet only around 1.8L/100km better than mine. Not bad though.

To top it off I scored myself 2 new rear Michelin 245/40/18 tyres. Well - not scored yet. Salesman running it by his manager and will let me know tomorrow. Should hey them though.

Aye, don't knock the A3 Mikey! Very nice little car.

Fuel consumption would be due to the turbo, as that really chows petrol if it gets to full boost and/or not driven correctly, as the optimal way to drive is slightly different than an N/A engine. Well plus the fact that it has less total power than your 3.2 so it would need more urge to do the same thing.

At the same time, the turbo does give a lot of low down torque which is what brings about the quick pickup in speed. Was the one you got manual or auto?

Not knocking at all dude. Was very impressed. I would happily own one. Just the lack of internal features would put me off. But the drive it's-self - awesome. Had fun.

It was an S-Tronic.

Haha no I know, but was referring to your initial thoughts more than the final ones. Yeah not the most tech laden when specced basically, but with a few things added it becomes very nice actually, with some things that even higher up cars have unavailable (or at huge cost).

How did you find the gearbox in that one compared to your A5?

Driving around town I found the gearbox in the A3 to be better. More responsive and no lag (which my A5 has). At higher speeds or long periods of acceleration I found the A5 to be better.

The engineer at Audi said lag in mine will disappear in time as the car learns me. So will see. It's irritating. Especially when navigating right spots.

Hmmm interesting.. would like to take yours for a drive then, maybe see if I can figure out any specific reasons for the lag.

Friend wants to buy a new Golf 7 out the box. Told him he's mad. Hoping he'll consider a second hand/demo Audi A3 with <10,000km.

Impressive power and sports car driving performance - Audi is celebrating the 25th anniversary of TDI technology with a dynamic special edition model. The Audi A7 Sportback 3.0 TDI competition makes its potential clear - it delivers 240 kW (326 hp), combined with a powerful 650 Nm (479.4 lb-ft) of torque, and accelerates from zero to 100 km/h (62.1 mph) in 5.1 seconds.

The A3 is a great car. But advise him to save some $ and get the new Polo with all the extra's instead, that would be my $ 0.02

He's upgrading from the new Polo (±'11-12), which is quite kitted out - suede, seat warmers, etc.

In that case he's upgrading from the old polo, as the new one launched on the 18th of last month. Has about 80% of what the A3 has at a much lower price, and if I were to be offered the choice now, I would go for the Polo in order to save the aforementioned moola

I think he's looking for more car, be it the feeling of it or what is perceived of it.

So basically a new Polo vs a second hand very low mileage A3.
