Nope, took my friend to Audi today to look at A3s. Very nice. Test drove the 2.0 TDI myself. Decent amount of torque!

A3 Sedan is a serious looker. But he's more keen on the A3 Sportback.

So as it stands:

R330k Golf 7 1.4 TSI Comfortline Bluemotion + bells & whistles incl. leather

R399k Audi A3 Sportback 1.8 TFSI + bells & whistles excl. leather.

If he must have the extra punch in acceleration then the 1.8 is a great motor, just a bit thirsty for my taste though. The Quattro would be worth a look as well though for extra grip etc. Just tell him to get the adaptive cruise if he is buying new!

^^ Nice pics, damn those bays are narrow!

Are those new or demo/low mileage prices?

I think they're classified as new? The Audi has 250km on the clock. We tested it today (1.8 TFSI manual), as well as the 1.4 TFSI S-Tronic, and 2.0 TDI manual.

They've brought the price down from R429k to R399k.

His limit is R370k, so we're already over. I'm hoping to see the Golf soon. But I think he's fallen in love with the A3... :D

The MMI is of particular interest. Loves his tech, and it worked seamlessly with his Galaxy S4.

Nope, demo. Technically new but not really as fully new would allow him to spec it to his desires.

MMI does work great overall, very intuitive as well. Too bad about NAV pricing (though it can be retrofitted elsewhere for much less).

Only dislike I have about the hatch is that it can work out more than the sedan if you elect to take certain extras. Won't be easy to keep either under 370 though unfortunately

Neither of those really stand out to me in terms of extras... Pretty sparse actually. Perhaps try a different dealer? At the least you want to have hold assist (in manual), xenon's and fogs, and adaptive cruise

Yeah, we should take a look at Audi V&A. There is a very active salesman on the Audi Forums, would be good to touch base with him. Will try arrange this after viewing the Golf 7.

Seems he's changing his mind - umming and ahhing over the A3 Sedan now.

Even though he saw/drove it, I knew my taking pics of it and mailing them to him afterwards would pay off. :D

As much as I like Audi, I just can't get myself to like a hatchback. I definitely prefer the looks of the A3 sedan, though its a bit light for my tastes. I prefer something heavy, just for incase something does go wrong...

On another note, mine is at Audi, have been busy bleeding the shocks for the past 2 days. I have a slight hope to have her back tomorrow. PITA not having a car, but it had to be done.

What is the 'adaptive cruise' and do you use it often?

Basically like normal cruise control, however it also regulates speed from 0 to wherever you set it, while keeping a set distance from the car in front. In other words, you can set it to 60 while in traffic and it will both accelerate the car by itself and slow down to a stop without you having to do anything beyond steering inputs, and would naturally do it efficiently.

The reason the sedan appealed to me is that the 1.4 on the sedan has the same basic spec as the 1.8 or 2.0 TDI plain A3 (sports seats, climate control, 3 spoke steering, sports suspension, 17" wheels, drive select, LSD etc) which allows you to save a bit if you are willing to go with the 1.4 instead of a higher up model. The sedan does have a slightly lower roof though, and with the sport seats I would recommend lumbar support as well since it can be a bit harsh on certain body types.

Interesting, thanks. I have a feeling he might do the sedan in 1.4. It's more powerful than his 1.6 'newish' Polo, so still an upgrade.

Oh definitely. The sedan is a bit heavier than the polo though at about 1.3 ton vs the new polo at 1.1, and the small power difference makes them both about equally fast (if you take the 1.2 auto Polo as comparison). The 1.4 isn't as fast as either of the other engines, but for my uses still quite satisfactory unless you have major inclines where the auto might get confused for a second or two (only happened once at a parking lot with a huge incline where I had to shift down manually)

Very nice!! Wow!! Brand spanking new?!! Sweeeeet!!! Sure he's paying a packet for the privilege?

Can't get over what new cars cost these days. Frightening!! I doubt I'll ever be in a position to buy a new Audi again. Mind you none of my 6 Audis were new.

Only car I ever bought new was my 2nd, a Citi Golf purchased over 20 years ago for the princely sum of R28000... Give or take....

Very nice! Go on, tell us all the goodies he has in there?

Well...

B&O sound
'Leather'
MMI
Upgraded rims
Something about boot capacity
Couple other minor things like smash and grab film/tint, nano tracker, etc.

Stunning vehicle. Epic power band on the 1.8 TFSI.
