The gear shifts are smooth, because there are none... The Multitronic is a CVT gearbox.

Although the Audi gearbox has 8 fixed ratios programmed and there were no problem switching between them. A friend advised me to check the manual mode as sometimes problematic Multitronic gearboxes tend to get stuck in a certain "gear". This was not the case with this Audi, but thanks for the reply

Hi guys! I posted earlier in the thread about a 2009 A4 2.0 TFSI Multitronic Ambition. I went and drove it today, and that is just a monster! I really didn't expect that much power from a 2 litre. The gearshifts were also extremely smooth and no rattles or wierd sounds from the engine. It's just an amazing car, I'm in love with it. The owner also agreed to lower the price to R185k, it's trade value is R220k

BUT, now for the realistic part. It has 80 000kms on the clock and the motorplan expires at the end of this year. It had just been serviced by an Audi dealer. I will probably be driving 60 000km in the next 6 years. Can anyone tell me is it will be better to extend the motorplan to 7 years or take my chances without a service plan?? Before I buy it the owner agreed to a 160 point AA approved check on the car, which will also identify some hassles with the car. I am most worried about the Turbo, Gearbox and cambelt breaking, because it's expensive to fix.

I must say that on the A6 I was also blown away by the power! It was a lot more impressive than the previous A6 we had...

The maintenance plan is piece of mind. I would say that one can't really anticipate whether or not a car will give issues. In my case, Renault has been extremely reliable and others wouldn't touch another.
Deciding factor I guess would be the costs involved

With the mileage you will do though, I don't think it will be worth it

I haven't read that - but with the AFP I think you're fairly safe :

Audi Freeway Plan is a comprehensive maintenance plan which covers
services, wear and tear items, and certain repairs.

Every new Audi is sold with a standard 5 year/100 000 kilometres Audi
Freeway Plan to afford you, the customer, peace of mind motoring.

Certain items such as tyres, body, trim, paint work, or accidental damage
are excluded from Audi Freeway Plan.

You can extend your freeway plan to beyond 100 000 k's, I've done it in the past. Will probably do it with the Q5 I'm getting tomorrow as well

Ye. I was quoted R140k or something to get another 3 years. I laughed. Then cried. Then laughed. FML.

I use a guy here in Edenvale to take care if my Audi's when out of plan. Very reasonable costs and does a better job than Audi themselves - most of the time.

AFAIK you can extend to 7 years / 200 000 km. Not sure on costs but as I said, you will only have your annual service and any repairs covered with the mileage you plan on driving so I doubt it will be worth it.

Well I just have to take my chances!! What are the chances that the gearbox will give a problem? I've heard that the B8 models' gearboxes are much better than the B7's??

You never know. I just let my Jeep go. One of the reasons was because it had a CVT and the maintenance plan was coming to an end. Might have had many more trouble free years from it, but I was not willing to take a chance. I wouldn't take a chance with any CVT, to tell you the truth... My one friend and his father both have CVT X-Trails. His is problem free, but his dads, not so much. He recently had to replace it and it wasn't pretty.

The first time my box failed I took it to Audi Airport and they quoted me R118k to replace the transmission. Seeing as that was more than the vehicle was actually worth, replacing wasn't an option. I had a Motorite maintenance plan on the vehicle and they paid R28k to have the box repaired. Well, basically to replace the ECU!

The box failed again in December 2013, out of warranty and again the ECU was replaced, this time at a cost of R21k!!!

The challenge is to find a decent mechanic that can service the vehicle, out of maintenance plan and do a good enough job of it without breaking the bank.

Martin Le Roux motors in Honeydew is one such service centre. TorqueTuning in Krugersdorp is another.

For gearbox repairs, Erlemanns in Laub street downtown JHB are the ones to use...

If you choose to do your out of warranty servicing through the Audi service centers prepare to pay ridiculously inflated rates.
