The Audi Thread

That really sux. Car booked in to see what the problem is?

Mine is still at the panel beaters. Expecting it back on Fri/Mon then into Audi for the gearbox.
You think driving with no cruise control is painful? I am driving this rental Toyota Etios to Hartees and back everyday with no auto gearbox, no cruise control, no auto wipers, no auto lights, no power, no decent sound,... This experience has renewed my appreciation for my A5 in a huge way.
Thankfully I only do the Hartees trip Mon to Wed so no pain and suffering for the next two days.

Good luck with getting your beauty fixed!

Yeah booked in, Google says it's either a broken sensor or broken wiring. Or dirty sensors... Etios must have been an experience.
Wtf. Just saw that you can't get the A4 2.0TDi or 1.8TFSi in S-tronic, only multitronic.

And look at the price differences between the S-tronics and the rest.

I will need to google this, thanks

To me, S-tronic means fast (instant), smooth shifts. It is more intelligent and plans ahead.

Multitronic is what most are used to, slower gear shifts. It is less intelligent and takes longer to 'think', therefore the driver feels the shift delay/lag.

Aww that is prettiness! Well done!

I had to drive my tazz again on Monday (wife took the Audi for a good cleaning after a day at the beach on Sunday).

Along with all of your "no this and no that", the tazz is a 1.3 engine with NO AIRCON. And weirdly uncomfortable seats (what's up with that?). How did I ever manage to drive that car for almost 12 years without feeling the lack of features, I'll never know.

Driving a multitronic is like driving a speed boat. You floor the throttle, the engine revs rise to a certain point and remain constant while the car/boat speeds up. It's more like an airplane-taking-off constant push in your back, rather than having distinct gear changes interrupting the power.

Thankfully, Audi is retiring the multitronic gearbox. It is the only thing I fear in my car that could bankrupt me or make the car worthless.

:D

I was impressed!

It would depend on how you drive, but the Rands cost is probably minimal for the satisfaction you'll get.

What's your average L/100km? Software does improve economy. To what degree, and for both slow and fast driving, I don't know.
If my memory serves correctly, my consumption is anything between 6.6 L/100km and 8.6 L/100km . Driving Miss Daisy is the former and when I and more likely evening driving driving home and not in a rush, and the latter is driving to somewhere (such as work) when I am in a definite rush.

How does chipping the vehicle differ to just driving the car in Sport mode? </noob question>

Difference? (excuse my ignorance)

Along with what PP and Gaz{M} mentioned, the experience of driving both is quite different. I much prefer S-tronic, and luckily that's all the new A3 comes in. It's the same thing as VW's DSG gearboxes. Wonderful boxes.

Yeah, almost 100k more for the 2.0TFSi with the exact same specs... :wtf:

Manual too, friend has the 1.8T.

CVT in auto mode does not have any shifts at all... In manual mode you have virtual shifts, which will be slower than dual clutch.

Cleaning the white head lining

Whats the best way to get a couple finger marks of the white head-lining you get in Audi's and VWs?

"Chipping" or mapping a vehicles ECU involves reprogramming a lot of parameters, like fuel, timing, boost etc. It will improve power and torque and probably improve fuel consumption.

Dropped my A4 at Auto Service Centre this morning for 120k cam belt and water pump replacement. Got quoted R8874. Still better than Audi's 20k a couple of months back though

When re-flashing the ecu it probably won't be detected at regular services and even if it is it would probably be overlooked.

The problem is if the engine does suffer catastrophic failure, the ecu will be checked out and then when they see that it has been reflashed there are going to be repercussions.

On a modern ecu a log of the flashing would be kept and then even if you flash the original firmware back, it will be detectable that the ecu firmware was tampered with at some stage.

There is already a bypass for that. The tuners are on the ball these days. They have managed to figure out how to reset the flash counter.
