The Audi Thread

Hi all,

Been reading this thread obsessively the last day or so. Some really nice conversations going on!

I was hoping y'all could help me - I am considering a second hand vehicle - an Audi A4 1.8T automatic, 2008. It's going for what I think is a good price (a little sub-R120k) and seems relatively low mileage. What do you guys think of this as a buy?

Would appreciate any insight!

Audi parts can get extremely expensive - you'll have to be prepared for that risk if something major breaks.

Let's say the auto gearbox dies on you in 5 months, are you ok with having to spend 40k (hypothetically) for a new one?

That's an interesting question actually, because after reading through many pages of this thread, I am actually on the fence about this one. Being a second hand vehicle, I intend to buy a motor plan through some 3rd party (any suggestions?), and I don't ever intend to use Audi dealers for services, parts, or anything else. I've also read that these cars can go for miles, and generally things can go wrong with any car really, but being that I won't go Audi would the parts still be so expensive?

I'm on the fence, because although it is a factor, given all the reading I've done in this thread I don't know where to come down on this particular issue.

Best bet it to take the car somewhere for a full inspection before signing the deal (the dealer's own inspection is not sufficient) - you'll want to them to throughly check all the major parts for any signs trouble. This may cost you a bit to do, but at least then you'll know where you stand with it.

Good advice.

Get it checked out.

I just dropped R250k on a bit of a lemon 2010 A6 3.0TFSI. Looked good on paper but previous owner abused this vehicle. I bought it from a dodgy backstreet dealership and have little to no recourse without going through legal channels.

Inspection is good but what kind of inspection exactly, can't have the car stripped?

Even the most thorough inspection can't prevent random failure, the R60k kitty needs to be there before you buy an out of warranty Audi(actually any higher end car these days) , stick it in a high yield 30 call account and most of the time you'll never need it and still score an amazing ride for relatively peanuts.

End of the day you'll have a nice lump sum and a fully paid off car instead of if you had bought new or near new you'd just have a rapidly depreciating in value car and a residual to bite you in the ass.

They would never release something like this though, would they?

^ Saw one this morning exactly like that around Century City, but personalised plates. He drove like a granny though.

Here's a quick vid of my 3.0TFSI A6 accelerating from 0-130kmh... Enjoy!!! I did!!! :crylaugh:

Cool man. Looking good. Give me the (stock) power & torque figures again. Too busy/lazy to check + if you done or are planning on doing (light) mods.

220kw, 420nm @ 2500rpm give or take... Thing pulls beautifully, particularly at altitude where it's equivalent to 250kw normally aspirated engines.

Cars been abused though, previous owner didn't look after her very well and I even suspect there's already been a remap done on this vehicle. If not, I plan on getting one done at some stage but for now I'm very satisfied with the power output.

Just took my 2011 A4 B8 1.8T in for a service on R102000KM. It was a minor service with 4 new break pads, 2 new break disks, oil change and new windscreen wipers. Cost me R12500. Just a bit of info if anyone is looking for it.

Not bad. I took my A6 to a private workshop, 4 new brake pads (front and rear), front brake discs, oil change, oil filter, gearbox transmission fluid change, remove seat buckle stuck in rear seat, repair wiring to rear number plate light... R9.2k...

EDIT: While in Umhlanga on holiday I took the vehicle to Audi Gateway for the brakes. Was quoted R9k.

Told them, no thanks. Still had to pay R1.2k for their quote.

Anyone here ever tried a branch of Steve's auto clinic? They look professional and pricing reasonable.

Had a remap done on a B6 1.8T quite some time back. Was an easy in and out transaction, minimal fuss. Car was reliable although I didn't keep it very long.
