The Audi Thread

I would take the car somewhere else, but don't know of any decent garages. Lots of people complaining on Hello Peter about Bosch service centre, Car service city, etc.

It's a 2006 A3, cost is about R9700.

Those are generally franchises so you don't know which ones are good or bad.

Where are you based?

There are a few well respected places around town, dependent on where you are based. They range from DDK in Midrand, Vagspec Centre, Torque Tuning in the West Rand, even some private guys like Stephan van Tonder out in the East. It would be worth checking out the Audi club and VW Club of SA forums.

I too had a bad experience many years ago with my old car at a Franchise Bosch which is now closed.

You probably dont even need to register to check our answers, as this is a very common question.

The only way it's worth keeping the car out of plan is to go private with servicing and repairs.

Hot and steamy: Estonian turns old Audi into road-going sauna

While South Africans are experiencing something of a freeze this month, much of Europe has felt like a sauna recently, which makes Willem Maesalu's weird car seem even weirder: the bright yellow Audi 100 Avant is a rolling sauna.

Maesalu, 29, got the idea to convert his car a couple of years ago, when he found out it would be too expensive to rent a sauna for his birthday party. He and some friends spent two weeks remodelling the vehicle into a working sauna: a SaunAudi, as he calls it.

It has all the accoutrements of a traditional Finnish steam bath: wooden panels, thermometers and a wood-fired stove beside the steering wheel. Actually, a traditional Finnish steam bath hasn't got a stove beside the steering wheel, because it is inert. But space was limited, and the stove had to go somewhere.

To use the sauna, Maesalu, 29, puts a chimney in the bonnet, fires up the wood stove, and heats the sauna to 60 degrees Celsius. If it got any hotter, the windows might crack.

"The hardest part was figuring out where to put the heater and to find a way for the windows to not get too hot and break," said Maesalu, a sprinkler systems maintenance technician and safety inspector.

Now you can configure your Audi in virtual reality

With thousands of different car spec combinations available these days, choosing the right configuration can be a daunting experience for customers, particularly since online car configurators often don’t provide a very clear or detailed picture of what you’re getting.

The solution, according to Audi South Africa, is to completely immerse customers in a virtual world.

To that end, Audi Centre Centurion recently launched a ‘Customer Private Lounge’ that includes a virtual reality (VR) experience, as well as a 190cm screen that allows sales consultants to present the entire Audi range.

While this is currently the only Audi Customer Private Lounge in South Africa at present (although one of 400 worldwide), Audi South Africa is planning to roll out the concept to more dealerships around South Africa in the coming years.

The VR solution allows customers to get “an extremely realistic experience of their individually configured car, down to the last detail,” Audi said.

Audi Teases RS Family for 2019

Audi's RS division has been hard at work and will be revealing a flurry of high-performance vehicles in 2019. Granted, we're already halfway through the year, so there's not much time left. This teaser image shows what's coming and we're quite excited to see what RS can offer, especially as rivals AMG and M have been hard at work.

We think the following cars are in this lineup: Audi RS6, RS7, RS Q3, RS Q3 Sportback and RS Q8. However, that's 5 vehicles and there are 6. So what is the mysterious 6th car? Some suggest its a facelift to the RS4.

We think the existing 4.0-biturbo V8 will be carried over, with some revisions and enhancements. Previously, this mill produced 412 kW and 700 Nm, which is fast for sure, but not enough to take the fight to the current versions of BMW M5 and Mercedes-AMG E63. We think this new Audi RS6 will need to be playing in the 440 kW / 800 Nm ballpark.

The RS Q3 and RS Q3 Sportback will be powered by the 2.5-litre 5-cylinder turbo engine, but we suspect it'll be producing similar numbers to the current RS3 hatchback. Previously, it was detuned, but if rumours are to be believed, 300 kW is the figure.

Finally, at the end of the queue is a big SUV. It can only be the Audi RS Q8, which we think will have the same powertrain as the Lamborghini Urus. For the record, a 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 produces 478 kW and 850 Nm.

That's insane!!!

Six Audi RS Models Coming This Year – Two Are New Additions

Audi Sport has a rather busy year ahead of them as they will introduce a total of six RS cars until the end of 2019. The shadowy teaser image previews all of them, and it’s really not all that hard to identify the cars we’ll see in the months to come with the signature dual oval exhausts.

So what are we expecting then? Firstly we will see the new RS Q3 and an RS Q3 Sportback. Both will share the glorious inline-five 2.5-litre turbocharged engine with somewhere in the region of 400 horsepower.

Then there is the new RS7 Sportback which could be revealed rather soon to compete against the likes of the Mercedes-AMG GT 4-Door Coupe and BMW M8 Gran Coupe. Then there will be an RS6 Avant sharing a powertrain with the RS7.

Audi confirms six new RS models to be revealed this year

Audi's SUV-focused RS expansion will include hot Q3, Q3 Sportback and Q8, plus new RS6 Avant and RS7 Sportback

Audi Sport will significantly broaden its line-up in the next year, with a new preview image showing the number of new RS models due to launch before 2019 is out.

The darkened shot shows six models set to wear the performance flagship badge. The first two from the left are Audi's prominent Frankfurt motor show debutants: the new generation RS6 Avant and RS7 Sportback.

We will also see RS versions of the new Q3 and Q3 Sportback, alongside a facelifted version of the RS4 to round out the 2019 A4 range, and a range-topping RS Q8.

Stirred into action by the success of performance SUV ranges from rivals BMW M and Mercedes-AMG, newly appointed managing director Oliver Hoffmann previously confirmed that Audi Sport will begin offering range-topping RS versions of nearly every SUV model in the Audi line-up, starting with the heavily anticipated RS Q8.

He said: “We have to stretch our portfolio and the SUV segment is the segment with the most growth. There is high demand from our customers for high-performance SUVs. The RS Q8 we will launch this year. There is really, really high demand for this type of car.”

Forget The RS6. What You Want Is This RS2.

We all lost our minds this past Tuesday when Audi announced that its 2020 RS6 Avant is going to be available in the United States. That’s big news. Really, it is. But here’s the thing. A different hot Audi wagon can now be imported to the United States this year too, and now there’s finally one for sale here. Why wait for the RS6 when this RS2 is ready to go already?

As you may be able to tell from the 964 Turbo wheels, the RS2 was built in conjunction Porsche for a few years in the mid-90s. Like the Mercedes 500E, the RS2 was given a comprehensive going-over by the sports car boys from Stuttgart, improving the cars performance in almost every way over the stock 80 Avant the car is based on.

Porsche modified the 2.2 inline five-cylinder under the hood to send 311 horsepower to the ground through Audi’s famous quattro all-wheel-drive system and a six-speed manual transmission. The cooling, braking and exhaust systems also got Porsche’s attention, turning this family wagon into Audi’s first RS monster. If you’re still unconvinced, read Alex Goy’s review of an RS2 we published earlier this year.

This specific car is a 1994 model and was sold new in Turin, Italy. It will be listed shortly on BringATrailer with a clean Colorado title by Farland Classic Restoration out of Englewood, Colorado. The odometer reads about 89000 km and the car received a thorough mechanical servicing in Europe in 2018 and new tires and an A/C service upon arrival in the states. I really like the silver paint on this car, even if it’s less recognizable than the blue paint worn by many other RS2s. In silver, it’s much harder to tell this car from a stock Audi 80 Avant, which seems like the point to me, but the blue isn’t bad either.

Audi Sport aims to double sales by 2023

Performance sub-brand wants to speed up development times; RS1 and R8 successor under consideration

Audi Sport plans to double its sales by 2023 as part of a huge expansion of the Audi's performance arm.

Audi Sport, now under an entirely new management team led by joint managing directors Oliver Hoffmann and Julius Seebach, also plans to bring the high performance RS models to market much quicker than the standard Audis on which they are based, down from 18 months after the launch of a standard car to around six.

Sales of Audi Sport models were around 30,000 units globally in 2018 and the plan is to take that to 60,000 by 2023.

A big model expansion is already underway in 2019, with new RS4, RS6, RS7 and RSQ3 models joining the TTRS, RS3 and RS5 models already on sale, and RSQ3 Sportback and RSQ8 models confirmed as entirely new additions to the line-up.

The RS6 brings 48V mild hybrid technology that sees Audi Sport models electrified for the first time, and the company has confirmed that electrification will be a feature of all of its models in the future.

I saw a really awesome looking Audi S3/S1 in Midrand yesterday. Had a custom metallic ruby/crimson red gloss paint job. Not sure if anybody has more pics or knows about this car.

Was properly impressed with the paint work.

Right, so what can I expect to go wrong on a 2015 A4 2.0 TDi at roughly 90 000km if I was to buy today? Any tips would be most helpful folks. I've been quick to suss this deal out, but frankly I'm wary of the looming 100 000km (would they do the service on balance of plan at 99 000?).

After the 90k service the next one is 105k, so no service under plan left, only if something mayor goes wrong.

You didn’t say if Multi-, S Tronic or manual.
If Multitronic, give it a skip.
Otherwise it is a great car!

Cheers for the feedback :) Yup, multitronic. Why the caution, and would a 3rd party plan offset your concern (the manufacturer extension is ludicrous).

On the subject of Multitronic, who remembers an advert flighted some years ago - there were two pictures, one of a button set and the other of a zipper, thus inviting the comparison of manual vs Multitronic. I've tried searching for it but it seems my Google-fu is weak.

Perhaps this one? I suddenly aged 20 years more than my Vitality Age if it is :D
