The Audi Thread

VCDS is a must with VAG cars, not only for diagnostics but also for tweaking stuff like how many times your indicator flashes when using the comfort flasher, how long your coming-home lights stay on, disabling features you don't need (headlight washers) etc.

It's pretty pricey though, I think around R4k for one with a three-VIN limit. But well worth it if you are planning on doing your own repairs

Or just make friend with someone who has an unlimited VIN version...

I got the bumper buttoned back up today and gave the car a good wash, then took it for a trip to the local Takealot depot to pick up some goodies and to see how it behaved on its maiden voyage.

It felt really strange sitting so low (compared to the wife's Picanto) but it pulls well and the trip went well with no drama. I'm still running it in (got a piece of masking tape on my cluster reminding me thereof) so I'll be taking it easy for the next 1000km, after which it will get another oil and filter change.

At a later stage I will sort out the cosmetics, but for now I am all too happy to have it up and running again.

It looks the part!
I'm assuming you managed to get the oil filter housing with the pressure relief valve and it's all working as expected?

Thank you!

Yes, I created this abomination which consists of the FSI housing wearing a TFSI 'hat', joined together with Sikaflex 221. The FSI 'hat' has a different breather pipe location and size, and doesn't fit as it needs to be slightly chamfered to fit with the TFSI manifold. I also had to extend the oil pressure sender unit wires by about 15cm to accommodate the new location for it (on the front of the housing and not on the side).

I've put around 150km on it since and it's been running flawlessly (touch wood).

For those of us with the stock RNS-E head units on the B7-era cars, I see there is an unofficial firmware update that adds a lot of features.

I'm going to order some writeable CD's (what a throwback) and see if I can get mine updated. It would be great to finally unlock reading SD cards larger than 4GB in size along with the other features and enhancements it offers.

It would be great if there was a firmware update to add bluetooth music (I have bluetooth calling only) to my B8, the cellphone in the cubbie's AMI works but you need to like every song on your playlist LOL

I wonder if something like this will work for you (since you have AMI)

Well, if it helps, I couldn't get my RNS-E updated.

Borrowed a DVD-writer from a friend and found a pack of CD's at the local gift shop. Got home, burnt the update image, connected VCDS to enable the eject button, now the damn navigation DVD is stuck and won't eject. So I will need to borrow some radio keys from someone to get the unit out, unscrew it and eject the disc that way.

Always a battle with this damn car in one way or another

My Q5 b8 chassis ,has same headunit as a4 b8 and the bluetooth plays sound through from the phone. I run my hand over the phone little sensor next to the camera so it switchs the screen off then it just starts playing through the bluetooth. I managed to get it to play gps commands through bluetooth too but thats a setting in the phone

Oh, so the DVD is like the memory? So it can't play CDs?
How I understand it the DVD slot behind the RNS-E display has the maps for the navigation as well as any firmware updates. Then there is a six-CD shuttle in the glovebox for normal music CD’s. Mine was coded to 255 so I changed it to 000 - let's just hope nobody breaks in and tries to steal my precious navigation DVD from yonks ago

This hurts to look at...a confusing pavement-special spec B7 Avant that's been severely neglected. Some highlights from what is a very obvious money pit. Linky

What's to like:

3.0 V6 TDI
Quattro Tiptronic
RNS-E Radio Unit
Wood trim
Factory fitted towbar
Colour DIS
Sunroof (not sure if solar or just normal glass)
Factory-fitted cruise control
Electrically adjustable seats

What's not to like:

Tattered seats
The bodywork is in need of a respray and dent removal
The front bumper would also need plastic welding or replacement
Every tyre is unique, incl. the spare
More fault codes than you can shake a stick at
Needs control arms all round
Oil leaks galore
Cracked windscreen
Brake rotors are all shot
No xenon lights
Centre console lid broken (common with the B7's)

Got around to some maintenance and preventive maintenance this weekend

Changed the rear brake pads - got a set from Midas Brembos - was not the cheapest around R1600.00 for the rear brake pads set but it came with sensors , got Ferrado for the front around R900.00 but it doesnt come with sensors lucky my front sensors werent out yet only the back, got a Mann cabin filter and 6 bosch glow plugs ( not bad around R196.00 each at Goldwagen but due to limited stock of these had to get 3 from one branch and another 3 from another branch) still outstanding waiting for the guy to come get me a set of from rotors looking at the ATE ones, can find a fuel filter anywhere for the car so which means dealer

Actually been to the Northgate Dome 2 weeks ago with a friend to look for a car and I have to say about roughly 70 of the cars there were involved in some sort of panelwork and respray, there were the odd really good finds but above her 300K cash budget and they dont negotiate. Found a pretty nice 2015 Q3 2.0Tdi for R239 000.00 window stickers when inquired about buying the car they said its been put into an online auction that we have to register and bid for it the current price on auction was R232 000.00 at the time. I was like dude R239 000.00 right now right here cash deal and he was like nope so we went to Renault and bought a new Captiva thingy for R234 000.00 all in, she plans on keeping it for 3 years so it made sense the warranty and service plans would cover her for well over that period.

Do you have the navigation kit and voice commands or are your radio controls beneath your gear lever? Those are different MMIs and that determines whether you have bluetooth music, mine definitely doesn't have it.

Yeah webuycars is dodgy AF, they wanted to sell me a car with a known steering rack issue and they would only fix it if I financed through them.
