Audi drops details on updated TTS coupé and roadster

The Audi TT range was given a facelift in July 2018. Now the Ingolstadt-based automaker has finally revealed more details about its all-wheel-drive TTS – offered in both coupé and cabriolet body styles – as well as revealed a new “competition” special model.

Both the soft- and hardtop models employ a 2,0 TFSI engine with outputs of 225 kW (down three units) and 400 N.m (up 20 N.m). The TTS coupé will thus hit 100 km/h from standstill in a claimed 4,5 seconds, while the TTS roadster will take three-tenths longer.

Top speed is electronically restricted to 250 km/h, while the seven-speed dual-clutch transmission boasts close ratios in the lower gears (Audi says the “wide ratio” of the highest gear reduces engine speed and thus improves fuel consumption).

Visual changes include a new horizontal blade in the bumper, along with a revised front splitter, vertical air inlets and aluminium-finished trim strips. The rear gains a similar treatment, with vertical air inlets placed below the taillamps. A wider diffuser with more prominent exhaust outlets adds aggression to the redesign.

If you desire a more visually appealing TTS, the “competition” model adds LED head- and taillamps, a fixed rear wing, red brake callipers and 20-inch high-gloss black alloy wheels. The cabin, meanwhile, gets an array of gloss black finishes while the exterior can be painted in glacier white, tango red or mythos black. The interior offers two leather upholstery options as well as Alcantara elements and carbon-fibre inlays.

Hotter Audi TTS for SA

While you can expect to see the facelifted Audi TT in South Africa in the third quarter of 2019, we are also looking forward to seeing the hotter version of the TTS Coupe.

Slotting in below the range-topping TT RS in the TT lineup is the TTS and while it’s not as hardcore, it still packs a mighty punch from its turbocharged 2.0-litre petrol engine.

The latest iteration features revised exterior styling but more importantly, the TTS now has 20 Nm more than before, bringing the maximum torque figure to 400 Nm. Power output has, however, been reduced by 3 kW to 225 kW.

Nonetheless, performance is still impressive with the TTS Coupe sprinting from zero to 100 kph in 4.5 seconds while its Roadster sibling is slightly slower at 4.8 seconds. Top speed is limited to 250 kph and both the TTS Coupe and Roadster are equipped with an enhanced 7-speed dual clutch transmission as well as quattro all-wheel drive and Audi’s magnetic ride controlled shock absorber system. All TT's are fitted with a particulate filter to reduce emissions.

The TTS's cockpit is driver-focused and is arguably one of the most aesthetically pleasing interiors on the market.

In terms of styling, 18-inch wheels are standard while 19- and 20-inch wheels will be available as an option. Two new exterior colours will also be offered including Pulse Orange and Turbo Blue. Other nice details include S sport seats with contrasting stitching and an additional sport screen in the Audi Virtual Cockpit.

A TTS Competition special edition model is also expected to be offered in limited numbers. It will feature bespoke styling details such as LED headlights, laminated Audi rings on the side sills, privacy glazing for the TTS Coupe, a fixed rear wing, red brake callipers and 20-inch wheels in high-gloss black. The TTS Competition special edition is offered in either Tango Red, Mythos Black or Glacier White exterior body colours. Two choices of leather upholstery and trim will also be available.

The facelifted Audi TT range can be expected in South Africa in Q3 of 2019 but the TTS Roadster will sadly not be offered locally.

Audi TT Coupe 45 TFSI quattro 2019 UK review

Should I buy one?

The TT had no shortage of fans. If you count yourself as one, then absolutely. By retaining the car’s core character, Audi has likely ensured this new version proves just as popular.

Drivers searching for more engagement will be better served by the BMW Z4, and once you’ve ticked a few options boxes on the Audi, a Porsche Cayman doesn’t seem too far out of reach, either, but neither are as accessible as this.

It’s through usable performance, interior refinement and some semblance of practicality that the TT continues to make a convincing case for itself.

Audi TT Roadster 45 TFSI S line quattro 2019 UK review

Should I buy one?

If you’re a fan of the TT’s distinctive looks and don’t mind that it isn’t the most engaging of convertibles, then absolutely.

Audi’s Roadster is well equipped and reassuringly powerful and it undercuts its major rivals. You’d need to spend a few thousand pounds more on a BMW Z4 for a more dynamic, rear-wheel-drive experience, or add at least another £10k to get a Porsche 718 Boxster.

For a relaxed top-down drive with a respectable amount of power, however, the TT Roadster still makes a lot of sense.

The Interior on the New Audi TT 20th Anniversary Edition Is a Stunner

Audi might not always have the best ideas for car exteriors, hence why we joke about its huge grilles, nearly indistinguishable sedans and sometimes downright frightful designs. But with interiors, somebody at Audi gets a lot of things right, and it takes one look at the Audi TT 20th Anniversary Edition to remember that.

Audi announced the special edition of the TT on Tuesday, and while the exterior is, overall, about as unique as a playing card in a face-down deck, the interior is truly stunning—kind of like the rest of Audi’s cars, where the outsides might be bland but the insides are full of color choices and diamond stitching.

The 228-horsepower, turbocharged 20th Anniversary car, of course, celebrates 20 years of the two-seater TT, and production of the coupes and roadsters will be limited in the U.S. and globally. The car comes with an exterior color choice of gray, or, exclusive to U.S. buyers, another shade of gray, and a “Moccasin Brown” leather interior. The brown interior has yellow contrast stitching, which sounds atrocious on paper but actually looks quite lovely in practice.

Perhaps yellow and brown are the new black. You go ahead and try that one out first, though, and let the rest of us know how it goes.

Anyway, Audi said those colors are a “nod to the original TT,” but as everyone already knew, the transmission won’t honor every former TT—despite a shifter design that would look oh, so lovely with an H-pattern etched into the top, the anniversary car will only come with Audi’s seven-speed dual clutch.

Forget about it, though. The 20th Anniversary car will be adorned with “TT 20 Years” and “20 Years of TT” badges all over, reminding the driver of just how special they are to be driving it. That exclusivity all comes at the low, low price of $52,900 plus destination fees for the coupe and $56,800 plus destination for the roadster model, and Audi said the car is now available in U.S. showrooms.

But if dealerships want to get people’s attention, they better drop the top on these cars—at least, the ones they can drop—because the inside is where the real beauty is at with this one.

Next-gen Audi TT coupé NOT in the pipeline, says report

A fresh report out of the United Kingdom suggests Audi has no plans to build a next-generation TT coupé, with the Ingolstadt-based firm’s new chairman preferring to instead direct investment elsewhere.

Of course, the TT range was handed a facelift in July 2018, with a refreshed version of the high-performance TT RS following in February 2019.

But, according to Autocar, Audi is strongly considering killing off the entire range at the end of the third-generation model’s lifecycle (predicted to be around 2022) due to lagging sales in most major markets.

The publication added that “insiders” at the German firm claimed new chairman Bram Schothad already “devised a plan” to replace the TT with a fresh-faced liftback model to take the fight to the Mercedes-Benz CLA (as well as the rumoured BMW 2 Series Gran Coupé).

This lines up neatly with earlier rumours (as recent as November 2018) that the TT’s two-door coupé body style would be ditched in favour of a four-door configuration. Whether or not this rumoured replacement retains the TT badge, of course, remains to be seen.

That earlier AutoExpress report claimed the new four-door model would hit the market in “less than two years” (so, deep in 2020 at the latest), adding that it would function as “a direct replacement” for the current third-generation two-door version.

Future of Audi TT in question

Lack of demand in sports car segment confirmed as reason behind model's uncertain future

Prospects for the well-known sports car have long been in question, hampered by ongoing issues over profitability in the relatively low-volume sports car segment.

Autocar has previously reported that Audi was understood to be re-evaluating the TT's future and now Schot has confirmed this.

When asked whether the TT will continue, he said: “That’s a very good question. I think there’s a future for an [Audi] icon but I don’t know if it’s a TT. My heart bleeds when you ask that question!"

He added: “I’ve got some things cooking which could replace TT, though not necessarily directly.”

Sources have told Autocar that a future TT could take the shape of a four-door liftback.

Schot flagged the ongoing investment demands of electrification, mobility and technology as reasons for the re-evaluation.

He explained that since taking over as CEO last year, he has reduced complexity in the Audi line-up by 27% through simplifying variants and engine line-ups but said there is more to do.

“Audi has to be really prominent in future, but electrification has to be financed. I cannot afford to be in every country, in every segment,” Schot said.

A facelifted Audi TT will arrive in showrooms next month and is expected to stay on sale until 2022.

The future of the Audi TT is uncertain, admits CEO

The head of Audi has admitted the future of the TT range is uncertain, saying my heart bleeds when you ask that question.

The folks over at Autocar asked Audi CEO Bram Schot whether there would be a next-generation TT.

Thats a very good question. I think theres a future for an [Audi] icon but I dont know if its a TT. My heart bleeds when you ask that question, he told the British publication.

Still, Schot revealed he had some things cooking which could replace TT, though not necessarily directly.

His comments lined up with an earlier report from February 2019 suggesting the Ingolstadt-based firm had no plans to build a next-generation TT, preferring to instead direct investment elsewhere.

Audi directors committed to TT's survival

Model's uncertain future has been an "emotional" topic of discussion in boardroom meetings

The Audi TT could live on in the brand's electrified future, according to board member for technical development Hans-Joachim Rothenpieler.

Asked if the two-seater could fall victim to line-up consolidation in an effort to meet WLTP regulations and improve profitability, he stated that the board has been "fighting for it".

Audi plans to introduce 12 electric models before 2030, but it's hopeful that the range will include a viable model in each segment.

"We want it", said Rothenpieler of the Porsche 718 rival, which has been the subject of "emotional discussions" taking place in recent Audi boardroom meetings.

Prospects for the long-running sports car have long been in question, hampered by ongoing issues over profitability in the relatively low-volume segment.

Autocar has previously reported that Audi was understood to be re-evaluating the TT's future, which was confirmed by company CEO Bram Schot at the recent Geneva motor show.

The Audi TT Is No Longer And Will Be Replaced By A Sporty EV

Since the late 1990s, the Audi TT has been regarded by some as the benchmark sportscar, the “daddy” as some have said before. If we look at the latest-generation TT RS, many have praised it as a baby R8. Unfortunately, though, Audi has announced that the TT is going to be phased out of production by 2022.

As per some rumours, the TT will be replaced by an all-electric sportscar (like almost everything these days) in Audi’s attempts to dethrone Tesla as the go-to brand for electric sportscars. “We want to have the strongest range of electric models amongst the premium competitors,” said Bram Schot, Audi’s chairman of the board of management. Schot stated that a new electric sportscar will be replacing it that is “emotive” and “in the same price range” as the TT.

Audi's TT is Dead

The Audi TT only gets to live until 21.

A design icon is ending. Audi’s new CEO Bram Schot has confirmed that the current third-generation TT will be the last, with Ingolstadt’s engineers not having produced a replacement for the compact sportscar.

Audi wowed the market when it debuted the Peter Schreyer designed TT back in 1998, but since the third-generation version was introduced in 2014, sales have stalled. Schot says that Audi’s priority has become electrification and the current TT is beyond the company’s immediate strategic goals.

The German premium brand is planning to reveal a flood of new battery-powered products in the next few years, with a promise to have 20 full electric-vehicles in its portfolio by 2025. As such a turbocharged two-door sportscar is not product priority.

Fans of the TT might be disappointed, especially those who still regard the original car as an all-time symbol of Audi’s brand resurgence in the 1990s. That disappointment might be cured if Audi’s product planners apply the same formula they did when considering the original TT.

Gen 1 & Gen 2 we did get the Roadster models. Gen 3 we didn't for some reason (they should have just offer it locally).

Ya, Gen 3 we didnt get, but people in SA does not like roadsters, this is a fact.

Audi to axe TT, expand Sportback range (and other plans revealed)

Just like the rest of the car making world, Audi is preparing for some big changes in the coming decade and its model line-up is set to change dramatically with the advent of the electric age, with some familiar models falling by the wayside.

Some of these plans were revealed by Audi’s Chairman of the Board of Management, Bram Schot, at the 130th Annual General Meeting on Thursday, and the future is certainly electric, with the German brand aiming to have 20 all-electric models on sale by 2025, accounting for 40 percent of its sales.

Schot stressed that there would be casualties of this product shake-up, and the first of these would be the TT coupe and roadster. The sports car range, he confirmed, would be replaced by a fully electric model. While there is no word on whether it will take the form of a low-slung two door, Schot did say that it would be an “emotive” model, and that it would compete in the same price range as the current TT.

The TT replacement would almost certainly be based around Volkswagen’s MEB electric vehicle architecture that’s set to underpin the ID3 and many other group products.

Schot hinted that the R8 could face the axe too, at least in its current form:

“For example, the R8 sports car. Do we need a successor with a combustion engine? Does this fit in with our vision? The discussion will give us an answer to that.”
