The awesome network behind R40 uncapped ADSL services

all props to him, but i don't understand how its uncapped, if the account has a 400gb cap on.

When I saw the name that's the first thing that popped into my mind.

If this concept is legally allowed why hasn't this been introduced to student accommodation/residences
It has been in some private buildings from what I understand, but instead of using DSL and twisted pairs, normal ethernet cable is used, along with a suitable router

It would be cheaper to deploy ethernet in res, estates have distance issues thus the need for alternative tech which in most cases involve fibre. an adsl rack is gonna cost you way more than a couple of ethernet switches.

Not just that.. why is it that estates in SA not do similar to reduce the cost of connectivity on the estate.. heck this sharing resource concept aka the uber way, could be used for the estates to deploy solar power too...

But it all boils down to corruption, fraud, mismanagement within these structures and unless u have a good one in place.. which is not the norm, it ain't gonna happen.

400gig per month?

Ya'all are doing it wrong...

Kudos to Mike for not sitting back in his retirement and coming up with a solution.
I know a 82 year old who uses 30-40 GB per month on her iPad and Nexus 7,
so not underestimate the browsing habits of the old timers,

On the other hand the vast majority of old folks are still stuck in the
paraffin era and are battling to adopt to new technology.

Agreed. Nice for him to potter about with stuff he knows and loves.

Not my ideas of fun wiring up the DSLAM, but I guess it's all part of finding something useful and interesting to do. :p

Any idea what the price of the DSLAM is ?
I haven't looked in years, sorry. Assuming you're not buying in bulk, expect to pay around R150-R170 per port for a Marconi. He should have picked up a 40-50 port DSLAM for around R6500-ish. Maybe, though industry contacts, he found a second-hand one for half that.

The 400GB cap is only for 6pm - 12am, as 12am to 6pm is uncapped on every billable amount at Afrihost.
