The Bafana Bafana Thread

Some more good news, the SA U20 side beat Botswana 4-0 on Saturday. They play each other again on Tuesday, as a curtain raiser to the Bafana vs Mozambique match.
 
A 2-0 win against Mozambique last night. Both goals were by Bernard Parker. Not an amazing display, but the team got a win.

Also thought I'd mention that Brazil beat China 8-0!

It's a nice place, with a great stadium, just wish there was a PSL team here.

BB should really take a few players from under 20. The thing of playing for BB when you are over 25 should be a thing of the past. I was impressed with Dean Furman and Kamohelo Mokotjo's five minutes display. I don't know why the coach didn't need Benni and Dino Ndlovu's replacements.

Bafana, and PSL clubs don't really get 18 and 19 year olds in the first team very quickly. I was hoping to see what Kgosi Ntlhe can do.

Gordon will try to convince some player to turn out for Bafana:

“There's a couple of players - I don't want to mention names - that are really playing at a very high level in Europe at the moment,” Igesund said after his team was cheered off the pitch at Mbombela Stadium.

“They were born here and never played [for South Africa]. They've represented those countries they're in now.

"Two of them have decided they want to play for South Africa, and one of them is an absolute world-class player from what I've seen.

“He will be introduced as soon as all his paperwork is done.”

Is it possible for a player who is already capped by one nation to switch to a different nation? I always thought that was not possible.

You can play youth football for one county, but senior football for another. FIFA allow a one time switch. Switching after a senior cap is much harder. You must have been a citizen of both countries when you first played. You must have only played friendlies, or there must be special circumstances.
 
The friendly against Poland has been postponed, as Gordon wants African opposiation. SAFA are now looking at Angola and Kenya for the 2 friendlies. This looks like setting up easy wins before the AFCON. It probably cost a lot to get out of the Poland contract too.
 
One of the players Gordon could try to convince to play for Bafana:

Gordon Igesund may well take note of another South African-born player making his way in Europe after right-back Joel Untersee has recently appeared for the first team at Italian champions Juventus.

The 18-year-old, who was born in Roodepoort but spent most of his life in Switzerland, has made his way through the Juventus academy having been signed by the club two years ago from FC Zurich.

He has already played at every junior level for Switzerland from Under-15 to Under-19 and is able to also operate as a right winger or defensive midfielder.

Kickoff

I haven't seen him play, but he will likely be hard to convince. He's young and has played in the Swiss national system. It would be good to have more players in Europe reperesent Bafana Bafana.
 
SAFA have now confirmed that Bafana will play away to Poland and Kenya on 12 and 16 October.
 
Pienaar has retired from international football:(

Safa CEO Robin Petersen confirmed Steven Pienaar has announced his retirement from international football at the Bafana Bafana squad announcement at Safa house on Tuesday.

In a letter from the Everton player addressed to coach Gordon Igesund and Safa, the former national captain informed the team of his decision on Monday.

In the letter, read out to the media by Petersen, the player said he was struggling physically with his Bafana role after 10

years of service.

“Dear sirs, it is with regret that I announce my retirement from international football,” said Pienaar in his letter.

“He's given us 10 years of service and his body is tired,” said Igesund.

He's been on form lately. He missed the a few games due to injury though. But yah, there are better players he could have chosen.

instead of Teko, he was supposed to select Jali.

Still waiting to see combination of Jali and Manyisa in the Bafana game.
