The Banting/LCHF Thread

I've been thinking of purchasing "Low Carb is Lekker".

The only thing putting me off is the fact that I don't eat red meat: only chicken, fish & vegetables.

Question: does the book have sufficient non-meat recipes to justify its purchase ?

Oh yeah, it has a good variety when it comes to chicken and veggie dishes too.

I broke banting protocol today ....... stopped for coffee at Mugg and Bean and the biccy tortured me until I ate it, lol.

I have become so used to giving my wife or daughter the wrapped biscuit at Wimpy that everytime I have a coffee at such places I don't even see the biscuit anymore :)

First I thought this ^

Then when I did this ^, I told myself "I'm good".

Edit: I just saw this on Makro website: Hellmanns-Makro
Compared to the one I was talking about: Hellmanns
The ingredients seem different. The one from Makro is made out of Sunflower oil and it's only 55% of it whereas the other one uses soybean oil and it's 75% of it.
Has anyone tried the one from Makro vs the other one?

According to the container the Hellmans from Makro is locally manufactured

I dunno if you would have been able to overlook this one. Freshly baked, about as big as my palm and a few chopped nuts and choc chips on top. It truly looked and smelled too good to ignore :D

Soy may be a banned product on Banting/lchf however it's not because of carb content but rather because soy is considered toxic. However, I have mayo maybe once a fortnight and in limited quantities, probably no more than a tablespoon at a time, so I'm not going to stress about it. If I was chowing soy products everyday and guzzling down Hellman's by the jar then its a different story.

My approach is to at least apply a level of thinking to what you're eating, how much and how often.

Whatever you do, DO NOT try these: http://www.woolworths.co.za/store/f...uct-details-index.jsp?productId=6009178950791

I did and now I am hooked... They are awesome!!!

There's a whole bunch of bad stuff in those. Rather buy raw plain almonds.

Almonds, BBQ Flavouring [Maltodextrin, Salt, Sugar, Acidity regulators, Yeast extract, Vegetable powder (Onion, Garlic), Colourants, Cayenne pepper, Paprika powder, Flavourings (Soya), Anti-caking agent, Vegetable Fat (Palm Fruit), Flavour enhancer(nucleotides), Non-nutritive sweetner, Sucralose, Exacts of spices (Paprika Oleoresin, Capsicum Oleoresin)], Tapioca Starch.

There might be other bad ingredients, not sure.

I agree - but I am in maintenance so allow myself treats like those - better than sweets and chocolate

I was wrong, checked the jar it's 1.1mg/100mg transfats and 1mg carbs, so yes it's not good if you're going to eat half a jar but a dollop or two here and there would be OK.

agreed

much better to buy raw nuts and then make your own bacon nut snacks as per the book, totally addictive

Also, more importantly (to me), cheaper to buy them raw and in bulk

The price of these little <100g packets are ridiculous! And then there's the flour, R100 for 300g? That's more than R300 a kilo, you can get 2kg of raw almonds and just grind them yourself or something... *grumbles*

Hey Guys, just a quick one, started banting "again" today.

My concern is I am not going to have enough energy to gym properly this evening, anything I can eat before gym to help with that?

I purchased the book last week. Last night my wife made the curry recipe (with green beans and pumpkin) with cauliflower rice and some sort of chutney from the book. Only substituted the mince with chicken. Tasted good!

Even the kids says we are eating nicer food now on this diet of ours.

There's nothing wrong with 1 pinch of sugar.
You can replace it with xylitol if you want...

So Maybe you would agree with me that there's nothing wrong with a pinch of sugar once in a while? ;)
Some of us here still use sugar - even if it's half a teaspoon - in their coffee. I enjoy it once in a (long) while in my baking.

I was wrong, checked the jar it's 1.1mg/100mg transfats and 1mg carbs, so yes it's not good if you're going to eat half a jar but a dollop or two here and there would be OK.

Yes. If I agreed with you it's because I considered those proportions almost nothing, compared to the recommended 5g/100g.
So once again, back to what Bastid said: "... some level of thinking...".

I introduced exercises this week. I chew a good piece of hard cheese about 1 hour or so before starting, just the time for it to kick in. Works for me.
