The Banting/LCHF Thread

Dissapointed :(. I did a test when I got home and my Ketone measurement was 0.9 mmol/l. Way below 1.5. I can't believe it. I will test again tomorrow. I certainly feel like I am in ketosis.

How quickly can your ketone levels change?

I know the feeling...

Exogenous keto drinks can take you from 0.2 to 1.4 in 20 minutes

Not sure how quickly huge amount of fats and protein will affect reading but I know a normal cappuccino with all the sugar will kick you out within 10 minutes, getting back in however, I wonder how time lines work.

They say to not measure as soon as wake up and direct after training, as body uses ketones as well

Do you do IF, I started weekend 16/8 and will do this whole week and see how it goes

I had the worst weekend. So this was my 1st cheat mealssssssss and stuff ☹️☹️☹️☹️ my body rejected it terribly. I am feeling so tired and nauseous after this weekend it’s unbelievable. Anyways at least I haven’t picked up weight I said meals because I had everything and more

I did some reading about levels and it seems like the longer you keto and become fat adapted your levels will come down because your body will become much more efficient in the correct amount of ketones to produce. So 0.9mmol/l is not too bad and am in nutrional ketosis.

Did another test about 1 hour after eating. My ketones were 0.3mmol and my glucose was 5.1mmol
Im giving keto another 4weeks

If things don't improve ie. energy levels, hunger, head aches, weight loss etc etc then I'm going back to low carb eating plan as I know my body on those

Maybe I just have too much lack in knowledge about keto

How long have you been on keto and how is energy? By 7/8 at night im buggered and wanna fall asleep

I have been on keto for about 1 year and 1 month. I lost 20kg. And it changed my life, i feel great and have much more positive energy. I feel positive about life. Here is a way to eat lekker but be in such good shape. I am in the best shape of my life even though I am post 30.

If you feeling low on energy you might not be eating enough. Remember if you work at a desk you are burning calories in the brain and I do feel tired after a long slog at work. However, like today, I had a small breakfast of that ww carb clever nut mix (almond and coca nibs), 4g carb /100g and 40g fat /100g. I had 50g and some almond milk. That is very low calories (360 cal from fat) but the calories is in the form of fat. I went to play golf at 7.30 am and arrived at work at 9.30am. I worked till 1.30 and only around 1 ish did i start feeling remotely hungry. I had all the energy i need to lug my clubs around too.

Keto flu is a thing, can last up to a week. Remember to go full blown keto at the start. you need to kickstart ketone production. No cheating what so ever and keep carbs below 25g per day for starters.

a great breakfast that will last you nearly the whole day; is half a pack of bacon fried in coconut oil, 2 fried eggs, 6 halved rosa tomatoes also fried, and your choice of cheese some mozzarella or cheddar or gouda or feta (prob around 30g - 40g. I add the cheese when the bacon is nearly ready and let it melt around the bacon. That is one tasty fat bomb. Once all is on your plate carve up an avo and put it on top of everything. Remember to pour the left over bacon fat over your plate of food. I have this in the morning sometimes and I only start getting hungry or even thinking of food by 5pm

Trying this for a couple of days

TLDW summary from Reddit.

Summary

  • Gluconeogenesis: It’s real, but not a problem
  • Cites a study saying “Dietary protein contributes little to glucose production, even under optimal gluconeogenic conditions in healthy humans.
  • The study had folks eat traceable proteins (“radio labeled”) so they could track the metabolic pathway.
  • This chart shows that glucose flux was nearly completely unaffected from dietary amino acids https://i.imgur.com/u7vRMPj.png
  • He spends a minute or 2 ripping all people who claim too much protein spikes insulin also https://i.imgur.com/FkQMhdE.png
  • He reiterates that we should deal in grams, not percentages in macronutrient breakdown
  • Uses a lady who was keeping her protein under 20% and after looking into grams she was getting less than 40 grams per day and was seeing backwards progress.
  • This lady was losing weight, but started losing muscle mass and gaining body fat even though the scaled went down at first, then she stalled. She also was getting weaker in the weight room.
  • Mentions the 30 Bananas a day diet that some vegan suggests and that diet got more protein than this woman was getting.
  • Mentions Protein Leverage Hypothesis. Basically, if you eat too little protein, your appetite will compensate and you will eat my carbs and fat to round it out.
  • Protein Leverage Hypothesis suggests that us and animals eat to a protein minimum and tend to overeat if we don’t hit that protein minimum.
  • He mentions his own success using keto diet yet his ketone level hardly ever leaves .4 mmol
  • To sum this part up, don’t chase ketones, chase results.
  • Brings up the folks claiming if you eat too much protein that mTOR will kill you, says that’s straight bull****.
  • Mentions that eating too high of fat has its place for therapeutic treatments (epilepsy, cancer, etc)
  • Uses all of this to talk about how paying for the Keto Masterclass is not a bad deal because so many people get roped into the bad info out there on keto diets.
  • Mentions how the Keto Masterclass helped him figure out his electrolyte deficiency mentioning Tyler and Luis.
  • TL;DR - protein does not spike glucose or insulin, woman was not eating enough protein and saw bad results, don’t chase ketones chase results, be careful with all of the bad keto info on this here interweb

TLDW summary from Reddit.

Thanks, the summary is interesting, a few things that I did not know.

I plan to change my diet on Monday. I'm reintroducing intermittent fasting 3 days a week, and I'll be eating more meat (and more kinds of meat). Stopping breakfast, and that includes the Woolies low carb cereal I have been buying. And yogurt - stopping that too.

I will continue to eat eggs a few days per week as well as a little mature gouda every day. Mature gouda is rich in Vitamin K2, which is very beneficial for bones and teeth.

You going to fast for 3 days straight?

Seems like he's going to be doing IF three days a week, which is a shorter fast.

Nothing wrong with longer fasts though, I've done up to 6 days iirc.

Not eating for 6 days!!? that is insane.

My longest fast was 24 hours. But it gets one in line which I like.

I'm comfortable now Sunday's no fast, 24h fast Monday's, 1pm-8pm every other day. Amazing how quickly your body just get's used to it and I feel great to boot

Go to /r/fasting. People have done 50/60 day fasts. I'm planning another 6 day fast starting Monday.

Also read up on Angus Barbieri.

Angus Barbieri went to Maryfield Hospital in Dundee in 1965 where he remained for just over a year and shed an incredible 21 stone after going without solid food for almost 400 days.

He dropped from 33st 10lb to 12st 10lb after subsisting on a diet of tea, coffee, water and soda water, along with vitamins given to him by doctors. He ate nothing at all — not even a piece of fruit.

Angus, unrecognisable from older pictures, finally broke his fast with a breakfast of one boiled egg and some bread with butter.

I wouldn't call it a fast, but I eat lunch at 12pm during the week and then eat around 6 - 7 pm a small dinner
