With the impending change in jobs and the assumption that my time with an Apple MacBook Pro as a daily driver being open the Windows 10 presentation has finally convinced me to take the plunge.
As with all things in my life I like to make it difficult for myself, so instead of one change at a time I do it all at once, that's way you are so bewildered you don't have time to worry about it.
As a PC gamer I was always a Windows geek by default, until 2005 when I started to specialise in Apple and mostly converted to console gaming. So for most of the last 10 years I have been rocking a Mac in some form except for a brief stint on Windows in 2010 before switching to a Linux desktop for a long time and eventually getting back to OSX. Of course I work with Windows often enough, just not as a primary/personal OS.
Somewhere in between I left behind my stream of Sony Ericsson devices and took the plunge on the iPhone 3GS and later iPhone 4S and most recently the iPhone 5S. I will admit all of these were paid for by my company and therefore cost was never a concern.
In 2011 I got an iPad 2 and I'm typing on that right now as it's still rocking onwards for my purposes but I will admit getting a bit sluggish now.
So to summarise, I am a full blown certifiable (and actually certified) Apple super geek who is completely invested in the Eco system and therefore often miss many people's moans about Apple because a great many aren't applicable when you have everything the way Apple want it.
And then I ordered a Lumia 830 the other night.
Why? I will admit a big part of it is just my inner geek wanting to play with something new. The other motivation is that it's something I know nothing about in a personal hands on capacity.
What finally pushed me over the edge was the Windows 10 briefing and the evidence that Microsoft's time is coming again. The company is now run by people who "get it" and a younger bunch at that from my own generation. Good things are coming...or at least so I hope.
My hand is forced a bit by the job change as I'll have no choice but to go Windows. Well I could go Linux but to this day I don't feel the Desktop versions are quite there yet. Close, but for all the things I want to do and my conversion from Apple, Windows is the better answer.
Also I like closed systems. Yes I said it. So jumping from iOS to Windows makes more sense to me that going for the wide open system that is Android and the various caveats of that, but more than this I have always loved to support the Underdog.
Apple was that Underdog when I first started working in their products and that made it awesome. Microsoft is the new underdog (mobile at least) and I feel the same excitement for that all over again.
I'm also a big Cloud supporter. At the moment I cloud sync to three different locations. My phone backs up to iCloud which in turn syncs my photos to my MacBook and iPhoto. Which in turn gets synced back to Copy.com where I have a 150gb account for just photos and really important stuff. Google Docs is also a big thing in my life.
Beyond that my MacBook and iPhone also upload all my photos to Google+ which offers me free unlimited storage at lower resolution which is fine as its a fail safe backup and an easy sharing solution.
My Copy.com account syncs back down to my Microserver for offline backup so that if something goes horribly wrong I don't need to download all of it.
So that brings me to Office 365 Home and it's 5 x Users with 1TB of cloud storage each for R800 a year option. Microsoft is getting it right and offering all the right combinations to get me to buy into it. No wonder the OS is free, it doesn't make them money.
What is this thread about? Well in the next few days I'll receive a Lumia 830 and rather than put my commentary/complaints/questions somewhere else I figured I would focus it here. Although I'm familiar with Windows as an OS I'll also comment on that as I go along since I haven't used 8/8.1 Ina daily personal use capacity.
Expect some moans and groans and maybe some surprises.
