The biggest and best supercomputers run Linux

virtually no restriction ? that's the problem - it is insecure.
Don't get me wrong, it's just that 90% of the world's 100 million or so PCs/laptops run Windows, which is why they are so targeted by hackers, phishers, viruses, bots, etc.
Once Linux machines are more widely used, then they are going to be openly prone to attacks.
Spoken like an armchair professional. Regardless of what actually does happen if Linux became widely used on the desktop, one thing linux and other open source projects have demonstrated over and over is their vastly faster response times to security threats.

I loaded Ubuntu on some of my old systems that were running BOINC 24/7 for the last past months. Actually looks like they are getting slightly more work done on Linux, but I'll see how it goes in the long run.

For everyday use and to click anywhere run anything I'll stick with Windows, but its nice to play around with Linux and to see what alternatives it has for the common tasks I perform in Windows.
