That example is shorting actual bitcoin too. For futures you don’t even have to borrow the underlying asset at all. It’s 100% based on contracts, and settled in US dollars, meaning you don’t even have to deliver the actual asset at all at the end of the settlement period.

Yes, but what I was saying is in order to 'win' on your future, you'd have to influence the actual btc price, and in order to do that, you have to own large amounts of btc to do so, which is what I was thinking is why would someone dump millions into btc to affect the price just to get the cash from their futures, just play btc then, but as sinbad said, you can just borrow it, no need to put money into it

You don't need to do any of that to influence the price. If people are bearish/bullish on futures it influences the underlying asset too, and vice versa. Why? Because traders will use the futures price as an indicator of investor sentiment and trade actual bitcoins accordingly.

You can play the futures game without ever buying or borrowing actual bitcoins at all.

Yarr, I get that, this was about the btc price going into the toilet because like the rumors are shorting and price fixing etc. eg, I take future to say btc will be below 10k next week, I will now make sure it happens. In order for me to make sure it is below 10k and profit from future, I'd have to buy a sizable chunk of btc, lets say 1k, thats $14million at current price, 10 or so just won't do anything, and would have to dump a huge sum all at once. Why would anyone put that amount of cash into btc just to **** out the price and get their future 'winnings'. To me thats pointless. That was my original thoughts and why I think price will be going up. But as in sinbads example, I don't have to buy or own them short, I could just borrow, so my point was pointless:D I guess we'll see over the next week or so

I don’t think you get it at all. I’m just saying to achieve your objective you would just short the hell out of the futures for as many contracts as you can with your other institutional buddies, which would in turn trigger panic selling of actual bitcoins, then you cover your short. Even borrowing is not necessary.

First time that 'institutional money' will be entering BitCoin.

"Enter" is such a strong word. I'd rephrase that sentence as:

"The first time big money can be made from Bitcoin without ever having to buy Bitcoin ever again"

So BTC up over $1000 within 2 minutes of futures trading opening.
I reckon you'll see zero effect immediately. The effect (if any) will be drawn out and slowly start setting a new trend. I reckon we wait for February and look again.

Not immune myself I'll be honest. But have learnt my lesson once before. Just once!

:D Since then i've been a short term hodler... Buy low, sell high. Almost at the profit margin i've set to get that boat :crylaugh:

Predicting 250K+ today ...

I've always been a skeptic of cryptocurrency so I never hold. Never know when this whole thing is going to go down. Thus I miss out on these "capital gains" but I make it up from trading. I've made around 60% from trading in the last two weeks without holding and catching a ride on these waves. It does take some time and effort though to monitor the charts.

Decent wall to get through, but its looking like it may happen today

Those people are sleeping! That 15 BTC wall has been like that for two weeks now. Dropped to 14 now I see, one oke woke up and smelt the coffee.
