It managed to stay above $18k (Bitfinex) for a couple hours. Seems like it's back on its way down.

What makes you pretty sure?

I'm no expert. I do my best to find the right experts to follow. Quite a few that get it right surprisingly often are mentioning a trading chart pattern called a bull flag that has formed that suggests a turnaround from a bearish period. Could be wrong.

I think current BTC weakness is due to the insane price rise of Bitcoin Cash today. But that should slow down soon enough.

Yes. A scary couple of days with BTC is making people switch to BCH and other alts. But they will be back.
One of these days they won't come back. The Koreans and Japan are testing Ripple for bank transfers, the Scandinavians are making use of Ether to buy shares and the Germans (Bosch) just pushed 1.7 billion USD into IOTA. They all have much better transaction fees and better underlying tech than Bitcoin.

The only thing happening with Bitcoin is futures trading on it in USD and getting dropped as a payment method on services.

It might be the "gold standard" but soon enough people just won't have a reason to come back.

That said, let's hope XRP doesn't skyrocket, stays cheap and actually gets implemented worldwide as a "currency".

Right now it is starting to show it's age, but if the lightning network solution works out so that most transactions can be offloaded from the blockchain and completed off the chain, then BTC's issues of transaction fees and speed will be next to nothing.

>>>if the lightning network solution works out

When should we expect to know?
