There is nothing slow about BMW's giant-killing M2 coupé but, according to tuner Rob Green, the nicest thing about the M2 is that BMW has left considerable scope for improvement.

In many ways, he says, it's a tuner's dream. Squeezing more power out of BMW's three-litre turbosix is pretty straightforward; the challenge is to do it without compromising driveability, midrange or throttle response.

After all, anybody who's spent upwards of R850 000 on a boulevard bolide doesn't want it turned into a fractious, temperamental track beast. Which is why RGM Motorsport took the conservative approach on this customer's M2, opting for a Plug-in Power software module and a chip tuning package with a bridge plug.

This customer also runs a can of Torco Race octane booster with every tankful of fuel, even for everyday driving on the street; the car deserves high-quality fuel, he says, and he can feel the difference.

Peak power is up from 272kW to 286kW, maximum torque from 465Nm to a tar-wrinkling 570Nm, a 14 percent gain - but the most impressive number is the extra 33kW at 3500rpm, for huge mid-range punch right where it does the most good.

I will never understand people who chip tune already fast nearly 1 million rand cars. Some poor bugger who buys it second hand in 4 years time gets a lemon.
