BMW M2 Competition Drifts & Cuts for Record

The new BMW M2 Competition, which is due to arrive in SA next month, has broken a new record by cutting a total of 117 bamboo mats in 60 seconds while drifting. Watch the video...

The latest stunt video releases by BMW, which was shot in Cape Town, shows the new BMW M2 Competition drifting around a set with the intention of destroying as many bamboo mats in 60 seconds with the help of a sharp blade attached to the car.

The mats were arranged in semi-circles so that the M2 Competition could slice them while drifting around the course. The video highlights the M2 Competition’s agility and handling capabilities.

“This is a very tricky bit of driving, it is virtually impossible. The demands on the M2 Competition are immense. Every drift has to be performed with absolute precision; there is no room for error. A strong presence and agility naturally help a lot” said stunt coordinator Marc Higgins.

The new BMW M2 Competition is fitted with a straight-6, 3.0-litre twin-turbocharged petrol engine from the M3/M4 with 302 kW and 550 Nm of torque. When equipped with a 7-speed dual-clutch (M-DCT) automatic transmission, the M2 Competition is claimed to sprint from 0 to 100 kph in 4.0 sec, while the 6-speed manual version will reach the benchmark in 4.2 sec. Top speed is limited to 250 kph, but an optional M Driver's Package will take the top speed to a heady 280 kph.

We recently drove the M2 Competition in Spain at its international launch and when it arrives in SA next month you can expect to pay R972 029 for the M2 Competition manual while the M2 Competition M-DCT will be priced from R1 026 505.

Dahler Push BMW M2 Competition Up To 503 HP (375 KW)

The BMW M2 Competition is so new, tuners have not really had time to tinker with it but Dahler must have got their hand on one of the first units and created a little monster.

It’s called the BMW M2 Competition2, and for a good reason as the Swiss company has already used the Competition moniker in the first M2 in 2016, when they stuffed an S55 engine into it.

The most potent offering for the Dahler M2 Competition packs a whopping 503 hp (375 kW) and 700 Nm of torque which is substantially higher than he stock car’s 410 hp (302 kW) and 550 Nm.

The tune included an in-house built stainless steel exhaust system with four tailpipes, said to provide the car with a “sporty-sonorous and unmistakable” sound.

Clubsport coilovers were also fitted for improved handling and, on request, the tuner can throw in a spring set that brings the ride closer to the ground.

Visually, Dahler’s M2 Competition2 is distinguished by a front spoiler lip with side flaps, rear spoiler or rear wing and 9×20-inch front and 10.5×20-inch rear wheels.

For those who plan on participating in track days can order a roll bar and racing seats, which are available at an extra cost.

Next-gen BMW M2 will be a ‘drift machine’, promises exec

A high-ranking BMW executive has confirmed the next-generation 2 Series will remain rear-driven, adding that the M2 will be a “drift machine”.

Speaking to drive.com.au at the Paris Motor Show, Klaus Fröhlich, member of the BMW board responsible for development, revealed the coupé would retain its rear-wheel-drive configuration, despite other models in the range (such as the 1 Series and X1) switching to front-drive platforms.

“The next-generation 2 Series will be called the drift machine. So, whenever I look at the design I can say ‘Adrian [van Hooydonk, the brand’s design chief], does that really look like a drift machine? It should have more thrill, do something more’,” he told the Australian publication.

Fröhlich said it was “important” for the M brand that drive still went to the rear of the coupé.

“People asked ‘does it [rear-wheel drive] really matter because the segment is too small?’. And I think it is so important for the brand and it’s so important for M, because the M2 is the entry model,” he said.

“So, I fought hard and I won, so you will have also a 2 Series successor that will have the power where you need it.”

The next-generation M2, of course, is still some way off, with the Bavarian brand having revealed its M2 Competition only in April 2018.

BMW M2 CS Or CSL Spotted Testing At The Nürburgring

A large amount of new spy shots shows us that BMW are currently evaluating an even hotter M2 variant with earlier rumors suggesting that it could be a CS or CSL version.

The biggest indication that this is not just an M2 Competition model fitted with M Performance Parts are the M Carbon Ceramic Brakes, which are not available (either as option nor M Performance Part) on the M2 Competition. Its trunk spoiler is also unique again different than the M Performance version and not yet seen before.

The styling changes aren’t radical, but the car has been equipped with a larger front spoiler and what appears to be a power dome hood. The bulge is pretty noticeable in certain pictures and it’s not present on the M2 Competition.

Only time will tell what model this actually is but previous reports have suggested the M2 CS will be a limited edition model that is available exclusively in the United States.

BMW M2 Competition Officially Sets 7:50 Nurburgring Lap Time

Sport Auto recently got their test driver, Christian Gebhardt in the BMW M2 Competition on the famous Nordschleife who managed to set a time of 7:52,36.

The publication did confirm in the YouTube comments section that BMW’s official test driver Jörg Weidinger was able to lap the circuit in 7:50 flat making it as fast as a Lamborghini Murcielago and faster than a Mercedes-Benz SL65 AMG Black Series.

It also makes it two seconds quicker than the BMW M4 and a whopping 8 seconds faster than the standard M2.

This M Bimmer is quite the package so plug in your headphones, push play and watch sport auto’s Christian Gebhardt handle the little 405 horsepower (302 kW) German coupe.

BMW M2 CS Will Be Limited With Production To Start In March 2020

Yesterday we saw our first glimpse of a hotted up M2 and while we cannot confirm 100% that that was the future M2 CS, it certainly ticks all the boxes.

According to BMWBlog, the hardcore M2 will be called the M2 CS and not the CSL as it “falls in line with the other CS models of the M family.”

The publication also stated that the production of the new BMW M2 CS is scheduled to begin in March 2020 which should give the car about a year run before the production of the M2 makes room for the next generation.

They added by saying “at this time, we don’t know the number of M2 CS planned, but we can assume that it would be fairly limited, just like the M3 CS and M4 CS were before.”

The publication did not state their source of information so take it with a pinch of salt for now but they have rarely been wrong when it comes to the Bavarian automaker.

BMW M2 CS coming with less weight, more power – report

A fresh report out of Europe suggests BMW is hard at work developing a new M2 CS, with plans to kick off production of the sharper coupé by the end of the first quarter of 2020.

According to the folks over at BMW Blog, the harder-edged version of the M2 Competition will wear the CS badge and slot in neatly below the M3 CS and M4 CS.

With assembly slated to start by March 2020, the M2 CS model’s production run should last only around a year, before the next-generation version – which a Munich executive has already confirmed will be a “drift machine” – arrives to take up the mantle. And, as BMW Blog points out, that suggests a fairly limited number will be built.

Like the M3 and M4 derivatives sporting the same badge, the M2 CS will all but certainly shed some weight, while its 3,0-litre straight-six S55 engine looks likely to gain a little extra oomph over the already significant 302 kW and 550 N.m outputs churned out in M2 Competition form.

Of course, back in late 2017, a report suggested the Bavarian brand had scrapped its plans to build an M2 CSL, although it added that the M2 CS was still very much on the table.

BMW M2 Competition 2018 UK review

Should I buy one?

For existing M2 owners the answer to that should be blindingly obvious. The new model is far more enjoyable to drive than the old version while giving next to nothing away.

It used to be the case the M2 was the circa-£50,000 sports coupe of choice for people who needed more space than was offered by a mid-engined, two-seater alternative, but the M2 Competition is now so good to drive that it would stand toe-to-toe with its supremely talented rivals even if it didn’t have rear seats.

Meet Manhart’s brutal (404 kW!) M2 Competition

German company Manhart, best known for its love of tuning BMW products, has released its latest take on the Bavarian-brand’s M2 Competition, the mighty MH2 550.

In true Manhart fashion, the most notable changes to the BMW M2 Competition take place under the bonnet. The 3,0-litre twin-turbo straight-six, which originally produced 302 kW and 550 N.m of torque, has received an injection of 102 kW and 250 N.m of torque. Do some quick maths and the numbers add up to the tuned M2 Competition producing a whopping 404 kW and 800 N.m, which is sent to the rear wheels via a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission. The 0-100 km/h time, however, has remained a respectable 4,0 seconds.

A carbon-fibre front splitter and rear spoiler, side wings and 20-inch black Concave One aluminium alloys, contribute to this performance car’s menacing look. This MH2 550 also rides 20 mm lower than the original M2 Competition upon which it’s based. Other cosmetic updates include Manhart logo’s and gold accents seen round the car.

The Wuppertal-based tuner has also fitted an in-house developed exhaust system to add some aural drama to proceedings.
