The BMW M2 & M2 Competition Thread

BMW M2 by Futura 2000

BMW M as contemporary art - in the wake of the further development of BMW Individual, the BMW M GmbH presented its latest collaboration: a multi-tiered project with eminent international contemporary artist FUTURA 2000; the partnership will debut at Frieze Los Angeles 2020. In this collaboration, FUTURA 2000, who is known for his mastery of color, concentric forms, and kinetic composition, will create three exclusive and unique versions of the BMW M2 Competition in his unmistakable style, whilst also designing a limited-edition of the BMW M2 Competition which is scheduled for public purchase in June 2020. One of the hand-painted BMW M2 by FUTURA 2000 vehicles celebrated its world premiere at the second Frieze Los Angeles - held at the Paramount Pictures Studios in Hollywood.

"The BMW M2 Competition is dynamic, extroverted and, to a certain degree, pleasantly provocative. I consider it a great honour to be able to add a special touch to this vehicle," says FUTURA 2000. Markus Flasch, CEO BMW M GmbH, adds: "We are very proud of having been able to gain such an internationally well-known artist as FUTURA 2000 for the collaboration on the three unique one-offs of the BMW M2 Competition. I'm already looking forward very much to seeing how he transforms our M2 into the edition intended for our customers. With his unique, constructive and rebellious style, Futura is perfectly suited to a young and wild automobile such as the BMW M2 Competition."

The artist will work extensively on the three unique versions of the BMW M2 by FUTURA 2000 both on the exterior and in the interior. The limited-production models will also bear his unique signature. The trim strips on the instrument panel and the centre console of each vehicle boast a special, individually created FUTURA 2000 design. The bi-coloured, Dakota leather M sports seats in black and ivory white feature polar blue contrast stitching. In addition, the interior package includes an M Alcantara leather-clad sports steering wheel with a grey 12 o'clock marking and special door sill trims bearing the consecutive limited-edition number and a Futura signature. From the outside, the BMW M2 Edition designed by FUTURA 2000 is recognisable by the painted surfaces on the front and rear aprons and the side sills. Moreover, each car is fitted with 19-inch jet black light alloy wheels.

BMW plans new M2 Coupe & M2 Gran Coupe

Fears that the BMW M2 – with its purist-pleasing RWD layout and longitudinally-mounted 3.0-litre straight-6 – will be mothballed by virtue of the new 1 Series and 2 Series Gran Coupe's FWD platform have been quashed. There’s a new 313-kW, rear-wheel-driven M2 Coupe in the works…

Autocar.co.uk reports the 2nd-generation BMW 2 Series Coupé (codenamed the G42) is scheduled to go on sale next year. However, unlike the current 1 Series hatchback and 2 Series Gran Coupe, which have transverse engine layouts and are based on BMW’s Front Architecture (FAAR) platform, the newcomer will adopt an evolution of the brand’s Cluster Architecture (CLAR) platform and be closely based on the platform of the Z4 roadster/Toyota GR Supra.

That, of course, means that the upcoming 2 Series Coupe will be rear-wheel-driven and suitably configured to be powered by BMW’s legendary 3.0-litre straight-6 motor. It’s believed the next M2 Coupe (codenamed G87) will be propelled by a detuned version of the twin-turbo 3.0-litre straight-6 S58 powerplant in the X3 M/X4 M (also the upcoming M3 and M4) and produce peak outputs of at least "313 kW and 550 Nm of torque".

Hockenheim Silver BMW M2 CS Filmed In Detail

When ordering the BMW M2 CS, you have the choice between four paint options; Misano Blue, Alpine White, Sapphire Black and Hockenheim Silver.

Next-Gen BMW M2 Rendered Using 2 Series Gran Coupé And M8 For Design Cues

Last month we spoke about the new BMW M2 (G87) and now thanks to digital artist, @zer.o.wt, we have our first ‘look’ at the baby M ahead of its estimated 2022 arrival.

As you can see, the rendering combined design elements from the M235i Gran Coupé as well as the range-topping M8. The front sees two large air intakes with carbon inserts, along with a carbon splitter attached to the bottom of the bumper. The kidney grille comes from the 8 Series family, so it stays away from the oversized kidneys we are expecting to see on the new M3 and M4.

New BMW M2 CSL on the cards? M boss says firm ‘hasn’t decided yet’…

BMW M boss Markus Flasch says the German firm “hasn’t decided yet” whether it will build a hardcore M2 CSL.

Speaking during an episode of BMW Today posted on the company’s YouTube channel (and embedded below), Flasch suggested the decision had yet to be made.

“To be honest, we haven’t decided yet. But we will do more sondermodelle [special models] than in the past,” he said.

Lightweight Performance BMW M2 Competition Ready To Tackle M2 CS

BMW took the covers off the M2 CS last year and the reviews confirm it could be the sweetest spot BMW M has ever hit.

If you have an M2 Competition already and you want to take things to the CS level, Lightweight Performance has a solution that might work for you.

The tuner has replaced various components with lightweight items, fettling the suspension for better dynamic performance and including a power upgrade for more straight-line go.

The S55 turbo straight-six delivers 405 hp (302 kW) in stock form but LP has cranked it up to 487 hp (363 kW) and 654 Nm of torque. That is more than enough to surpass the 450 hp (330 kW) delivered by the M2 CS.

New BMW M2 CS: just 28 units set aside for ‘auction’ in South Africa

BMW Group South Africa has announced just 28 units of the new M2 CS will be offered for sale locally, with all set to be sold via a dedicated “auction” event.

Gennaro Bonafede, head of BMW M South Africa, made the announcement during a Q&A session on Facebook.

Bonafede confirmed while 30 units had been set aside for South Africa, two would go into BMW SA’s press fleet. He also revealed there would be a mix of six-speed manual and seven-speed M-DCT variants.

Interestingly, he suggested BMW SA’s “top clients” would get first dibs on the special-edition models at a dedicated auction event likely to take place at Kyalami Grand Prix Circuit at the end of 2020.

Bonafede said the Munich-based firm’s local arm had some 300 people on the waiting list for the new M2 CS. He revealed four exterior colours would be offered locally, along with lightweight 19-inch Y-spoke forged wheels in either black or gold.

BMW M2 CS Pricing And Availability For South Africa

If you missed the news, the BMW M2 CS is the hottest variant of the hugely popular M2 lineup and as you would expect is in big demand all around the world, especially in South Africa.

Under the hood sits a 3.0-litre, twin-turbo straight-six engine which has been tuned up to churn out 444 hp (331 kW) and 550 Nm of torque. This is delivered to the rear wheels via a six-speed manual transmission as standard or an optional seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox. When ordering the BMW M2 CS, you have the choice between four paint options; Misano Blue, Alpine White, Sapphire Black and Hockenheim Silver.

BMW South Africa has confirmed that 30 units will be headed our way with two of those belonging to the local arm for events and tests. At this stage, they are hoping all 30 units will land before the end of the year.

Over 300 people have expressed interest in purchasing one of them so selecting the 28 future owners is not going to be an easy task for BMW SA.

Each BMW M2 CS in South Africa will receive an aluminium plaque installed behind the iDrive system indicating the number of the car such as “ZA 1/30”, the month it was produced and the colour of the car.

BMW South Africa is estimating the base price will be around R1,5 million but with the exchange rate volatility and all units headed for an auction, it is hard to specify an exact price at this stage.

Wait, what? BMW M2 Competition coupé handed tyre-shredding 515 kW!

German tuner GP infinitas has released an upgrade for the BMW M2 Competition that pushes its peak power to a tyre-shredding 515 kW.

Using BMW's S55 twin-turbo 3,0-litre straight-six engine, the tuning firm has installed a stage-three performance upgrade, which includes a turbocharger upgrade, software changes, a revised central screw lock for the crankshaft and a sports filter. The M-DCT gearbox, meanwhile, has also been tweaked for more precise gear shifting.

BMW M2 Production Ending Soon

European production of the BMW M2 is reportedly coming to an end in coming months.

The current-generation BMW M2 is a fine piece of machinery and not only has it impressed us thoroughly in the numerous performance match-ups we have enjoyed with it, all of which can be viewed on our YouTube channel, but it's also been a deserving multiple #CarsAwards powered by WesBank Performance Car winner and finalist over the years.

In a report on BMWBlog, production of the M2 (M2 Competition and M2 CS) is due to come to an end in Europe in coming months, reportedly due to more stringent emissions standards. The M2, however, is not the latest BMW product to be shown the door. BMW's sole V12 engine which does service in the M760Li is also on the way out because of stricter emissions regulations.

While this development is sad news for M2 fans, BMW is currently developing the new 2-Series Coupe which is due to be revealed in 2022. The new M2 Coupe is expected to employ a longitudinally-mounted 313 kW 3.0-litre straight-6 engine.

BMW M2 CS 2020 review

Should I buy one?

The M2 CS is everything we expected – and more. It's a noticeably keener, more incisive and ultimately more entertaining car to drive than the M2 Competition on the track. The key to its attraction lies with its reworked chassis, which, with the adoption of adaptive damping, is really quite exceptional. That’s taking nothing away from its engine, which although a well-known quantity, delivers the performance to give the junior M car outstanding pace.

When BMW launched the M2 Competition last year, we wondered how it could be topped. The answer is with the M2 CS. Question marks about its ride aside, it's one of the best driver’s cars you’ll see this year. Yes, it’s expensive – almost half as much again as its standard sibling. But the rewards run deep. We're already counting the days until we get to drive it on the road.
