BMW M2 CS (2020) International First Drive

It's widely believed the M2 Competition is the best M car BMW makes, but when we got word the Munich-based brand was readying a CS (ClubSport) version, our eyes lit up in anticipation. Only 30 units of the visceral compact sportscar will be coming to South Africa (later this year) and our international correspondent Greg Kable got to sample it before its official debut.

The folks over at JMS Fahrzeugteile GmbH have created an interesting package for the BMW M2 Competition, focusing on track performance over power figures.

Featuring products from a number of other brands, this build includes a new set of wheels, tuned suspension, a beefier exhaust system and a head-turning body wrap.

Should I buy one?

Or rather, the regular M2 Competition wearing 'regular' Michelin Pilot Super Sport tyres is.

And this is the thing. Had BMW plonked down the M2 CS out of nowhere and simply said ‘It’s £75,000, take it or leave it’, we’d have cracked out the calculators. This is a sensationally good car to drive on the road, and one that doesn’t come apart on the track.

What you might understandably struggle with is the premium over the existing M2 Competition. That car lacks the more hardcore derivative’s brutal agility but gives nothing away in terms of fun and satisfaction. In fact, on the road, the ‘lesser’ car is actually the more expressive, usable and therefore likeable device – plus it gets the same magnificent and highly developed engine.

Obviously people who do regular trackdays will see slightly things differently, and it’s on circuit that the CS will hit its fast and playful stride.

But even so: it’s difficult to escape the feeling of what might have been. Had BMW found a way to chase 110kg out of the car with intelligence and engineering guile, as it did for the E46 M3 CSL, it might have created something markedly different to the M2 Competition, something even more capable and quick than this M2 CS on track, and therefore something that fully justified the £23,000 mark-up. Something like an M2 CSL.

As it is, the new BMW M2 CS flirts with the strange classification of being an utterly brilliant disappointment.

BMW M2 CS Takes On The Nurburgring

A German publication has taken the new BMW M2 CS for a lap around the famous Green Hell and posts a respectable time.

We at Cars.co.za are big fans of the baby M2 and you can imagine that we're eagerly awaiting the hardcore M2 CS's arrival in South Africa towards the end of November 2020. We know already that it's going to be one agile sports coupe and ready to take on any twisting stretch of road.

The engine is the long-serving S55 unit used by standard versions of the old M3 and the M4, but with a newly designed exhaust system. The twin-turbo 3.0-litre inline-6 delivers 331 kW at 6 250 rpm and 550 Nm of torque between 2 350 rpm and 5 500 rpm – an improvement of 29 kW on the less heavily tuned version of the S55 used by the M2 Competition, although torque is the same.

Munich's latest M car is a true monster, but should the Porsche Cayman GTS and Alpine A110 S be running scared?

But in the end, these are very different sports cars that do their respective things in very different ways. So it’s the Alpine that feels like the stranger in this group; I hope you’ve worked out as much already. The BMW is the emphatic and spectacular new friend you’re growing to like more and more (and let’s hope the affection grows with the upcoming next-generation M2). And the Porsche is the old mate, back from the wilderness and ready with your favourite old stories and gags.

Pick who you like, but you know who the odds-on best company is.

BMW M2 CS Is As Fast As A Porsche 996 GT3 RS Around The ‘Ring

The BMW M2 CS is shaping up to be one of the best modern BMW M cars and it seems the engineers have done a fine job on making it more track-focused than ever.

It is always interesting to see what sort of lap time a new car can achieve on the gruelling Nurburgring and now the folks from SportAuto have put the M2 CS through its paces to set a time of 7:42.99.


 
Dähler Push BMW M2 CS Up To New M3 Beating 543 HP (405 KW)

Swiss tuner Dähler has got their hands on the mighty little BMW M and the result is rather impressive.

The BMW M2 CS leaves the factory with 444 hp (331 kW) and 550 Nm of torque but if that is not enough Dähler can offer you something from their Competition Line.

Stage 1 modifies the S55 3.0-litre inline-six engine to make 512 hp (382 kW) and 700 Nm (516 lb ft) of torque while the top speed also boosts to 302 km/h (188 mph).

BMW M2 CS Racing

The BMW M2 CS Racing is available from 95,000.00 Euros (plus value-added tax) and meets all the prerequisites for a successful entry-level model. The new customer racing car is powered by an S55 six-cylinder in-line engine with BMW M TwinPower Turbo Technology, which with a capacity of 2,979 cc in the racing version achieves between 280 hp (205 kW) and 365 hp (268 kW), depending on the Balance of Performance or Permit B classification. The maximum torque of 550 Nm is transmitted by a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission, which has been applied using specialist motorsport software.

Another highlight of the BMW M2 CS Racing is the engine management. As for the BMW M4 GT4, this will be via power sticks in the future, which enable various performance levels to be programmed and retrieved depending on the stipulated Balance of Performance.

Motorsport-specific driving aids such as ABS and DSC guarantee that newcomers will be able to handle the car safely. A mechanical limited slip differential with pre-load and separate cooling also comes as standard, as do specially manufactured drive shafts. Like its production counterpart, the roof is also made of carbon.

BMW M2 gets cosmetic upgrades from 3D Design Japan

3D Design Japan has put together a collection of cosmetic upgrades for the F87 BMW M2. These parts are specifically designed for the base and Competition derivatives.

At the front, the Japanese designer offers a two-piece front spoiler lip that increases downforce and a pair of side canards. For the profile, the compact coupe can be fitted with a set of carbon mirror covers and a side skirt. The rear dons a rear diffuser available in two different designs and a rather prominent racing wing
