BMW M2 CS Auction: How much did those 20 cars sell for?

BMW recently auctioned its limited run of M2 CS (Clubsport) sports coupes in South Africa. Will this sort of sales method cause a surge in pricing and inspire other manufacturers to auction off their distinctive nameplates in a similar manner? Brent vd Schyff uncovers the details from behind the closed doors of the M2 CS auction.

These are odd times that we find ourselves in and, on the backend of a rather dreary history of inflated vehicle values in the South African car market, BMW recently made a bold statement by auctioning off the limited allocation of insanely desirable track-focused BMW M2 CS.

I, however, curb my enthusiasm, erring on the side of caution that this isn’t the best situation for the consumer. The auction effectively eliminates countless prospective buyers and reserves the cars for a select few with bigger wallets, who may care little about depreciation. Worse, it enables buyers who’re only interested in making buy-to-flip deals. If this is the future blueprint of how to sell rare models, I’m afraid that the biggest losers will be the brand loyalists, especially those shopping on a tight budget. They're going to be totally out-priced – and that doesn’t sit well with me.

About the pricing. Brace yourselves and be careful not to spill your coffee but, to add perspective to this conversation, the original M2 cost R841 000, the M2 Competition starts at R1 121 000 and the M2 CS was listed at R1.6 million – all in DCT guise. On the night of the auction, the reserve was set at R1.6 million, and a reliable source told me bids went up to R1.9 million, with the highest being R2.135 million! Ouch. To add insult to injury, there are still another 10 M2 CS units in containers on the sea waiting to land and their values are increasing as you read this.

So do you buy one over the M2 Competition? We simply have to say no to this based on pricing alone. The M2 CS retailed from R1.6 million making it around R500k more expensive than the Competition variant. With just 30 units making their way to our shores, 20 units were auctioned off for well above their retail price which topped out at R2.135 million for a unit with a dual-clutch transmission and carbon ceramic brakes. That sort of money gets you in to a very low mileage M5 Competition and that is a whole lot more car.

Only time will tell if the M2 CS prices increase in South Africa, making the initial 30 owners very happy, or if they take a ‘tumble’ and someone in the future ends up snagging a M2 CS for its actual retail price or less.

So yes this is technically the best driving BMW on the market but that is only because its starting point is already so fantastic. It is up to you to decide if you want to spend that much more money for something that is just a bit better.

That said, we are genuinely grateful for being able to spend some time with this special M car on track and on the road.

I'd rather save R1m and get an M2 Competition. Buying an M2 CS for R2.1m hoping it will appreciate in value is risky. Limited BMW M4 GTS, M3 CS and M4 CS are depreciating.

Manhart Performance Crank BMW M2 CS Up To 592 HP (441 KW) With MH2 GTR

The BMW M2 CS is technically the best M car on the market which would generally mean the package is perfect, but German tuner Manhart Performance clearly had other ideas and have cooked up the MH2 GTR.

Cosmetically you will notice a few significant changes with a bunch of carbon aerodynamic components including a prominent stacked rear wing and some BMW M Performance graphics.

Hop inside and you will notice a pair of Recaro bucket seats and some additional carbon. The centre left air vent on the dash has also now swapped for an Awron data display, providing the driver with important information about the powertrain.

The S55 3.0-litre twin-turbo straight-six develops 444 hp (331 kw) and 550 Nm of torque in stock form but thanks to the addition of an uprated intercooler, a carbon fibre intake, upgraded turbochargers and an ECU tune, output has been significantly lifted.

New 2022 BMW M2 coupé spotted for the first time

Rear-drive 420bhp M2 will pave the way for an M2 Gran Coupé and fiery full-fat M 1 Series

BMW is developing a new rear-wheel-drive M2performance coupé, as part of a future compact M car line-up that will include a four-wheel-drive M2 Gran Coupé and a 1 Series with more than 400bhp.

Spotted for the first time bearing similar cab-backward proportions to today's car, the second-generation M2 coupé, which takes the internal codename G87, is scheduled to go on sale in the UK in 2022. It will bring with it a detuned version of BMW M’s latest six-cylinder petrol engine, sourced from the new M3 and M4.

Despite the heavy camouflage of this newly spotted prototype, it looks as if the M2 will feature angular front end styling influenced more by the Z4 and M8 than the controversially big-grilled M3 and M4. Flared arches, big performance wheels and a quad-exit exhaust will be the most obvious visual differentiators from the standard 2 Series, but upsized air intakes and aero-enhancing trim will likely complete the look.

This twin-turbocharged 3.0-litre petrol unit, dubbed S58, replaces the similarly configured S55 used by the current M2 and promises the same high-revving characteristics, with a redline of 7200rpm.

G-Power Give BMW M2 CS A Ridiculous Output Of 651 HP (485 KW)

The BMW M2 CS is one of the finest BMW’s we have ever driven and considering it leaves the factory with 444 hp (331 kw) and 550 Nm of torque, you would need to be a power freak to want to tinker with that output.

G-Power as their name suggests are power freaks and have decided to offer a four-stage power kit for the brilliant Bavarian.

Stage 1 will see output rise to 493 hp (368 kW) and 650 Nm (479 lb-ft) of torque thanks to some software optimization and a central screw lock for the crankshaft that protects engine.

Next-gen BMW M2 to follow M4 ‘recipe’ but have ‘different character’

Executives at BMW M have suggested the next-generation M2 will again be closely related to its larger M4 sibling, though the two coupés will feature distinct “characters”.

During a recent online roundtable event, CARmag.co.za asked whether the upcoming M2 – which will reportedly hit the market in 2022 in G87-generation form – would again draw heavily on the latest M4.

“The outgoing M2, M3 and M4 were sharing many components. It turned out to be quite a good recipe for all of these cars,” Hagen Franke, head of product management for the new BMW M3 and M4, told us.

“So if you have a convincing recipe, you might continue that,” he said.

Spanish Driver High On Cocaine Caught Doing 160 MPH In A BMW M2 CS

Over the weekend on the coastal Autopista 7 in Tarragona, a beautiful Mediterranean town in Spain’s Catalonia, the Guardia Civil caught a brand new BMW M2 CS doing more than double the posted speed limit. An M2 CS is an $85,000 car in the U.S., but over in Spain it’ll run you the equivalent of $122,000. Yikes! You might think that anyone who would pay such a sum for a BMW 2 series would have to be high on copious amounts of drugs, and you’d be right, because the driver tested positive for cocaine consumption.

The 48-year-old driver was scooting along at 160 miles per hour (256 kph) in a zone where the limit was just shy of 75 miles per hour. Technically the M2 CS is quoted as having a top speed of 174, so it took a bit of restraint to refrain from keeping the throttle buried all the way to V max. This is a good opportunity to remind everyone that it is a bad idea to do cocaine while driving, it is a bad idea to put everyone in danger by going so fast on public streets, and it’s probably a bad idea in general to sell a car with a top speed of 174.
