Because the M1 is a totally different car and a once off from 1979.

I thought it was because after that car, they made the m3, and 3m was obviously already a trademark.

The first m car was a Bmw m535i followed by the 1m and then the m5 Bmw. During the time there were other models in the 5 series range. Then Bmw decided to create an m3 in the 3 series range and the rest then was history

Truth be told the 1m is actually called the "1 series m coupe"
