The BMW X3 Thread

At the rate that it depreciates I wont get it. But the X3 is my favourite.

Yet I know many that got offered a mere R100k trade value for their 7 year old BMWs X series.
Yet the cheapest 2018 G01 is R350k on Autotrader.

The new BMW iX3 gets L2+ autonomous driving powered by Qualcomm

The fresh design and electric powertrain of the all-new BMW iX3 are big news, but a really important story is tucked away under the sheet metal. The new iX3 is the debut vehicle for a brand-new automated driving system born from a three-year collaboration between BMW and the chip-making giant Qualcomm. Both companies claim that this new tech could fundamentally shift how we interact with our cars.

This new system is called the Snapdragon Ride Pilot, but it doesn't offer full self-driving, where you can take a nap in the back seat. Instead, it's an extremely advanced driver-assistance system designed to act as a highly competent co-pilot.

Built on Qualcomm's powerful Snapdragon Ride systems-on-chips (SoCs), the platform uses a sophisticated software stack jointly developed by the two companies. Its capabilities are scalable, meaning it can manage basic safety functions required for top crash-test ratings, but it can also scale up to handle Level 2+ automated driving - that's hands-free highway cruising and navigating complex urban environments, provided the driver remains alert and ready to take over.

BMW is calling the central computer running the show the "Superbrain of Automated Driving." The unit, powered by those Snapdragon SoCs, provides 20 times the computing power of the system it replaces. To process the world around it, the iX3 employs an array of high-definition cameras, with resolutions of 8 and 3 megapixels, alongside radar sensors.

BMW to launch 40-plus new cars by 2028 - all with their own look

Neue Klasse design language will be rolled out to every BMW, but the firm will avoid a 'Russian doll' approach

Future BMW models will all feature distinct designs as the company rapidly rolls out the new Neue Klasse design language across its line-up, according to design chief Adrian van Hooydonk.

The new iX3 is the first production vehicle to feature the radical new design language, which features cleaner lines, the removal of chrome and two new, illuminated interpretations of the kidney grille – an upright version for SUVs and a flat, wider interpretation for saloons.

BMW will rapidly roll out new Neue Klasse models, such as the new i3 due next year, but will also heavily facelift its current EV and combustion models to reflect the new design. That will involve more than 40 new model launches in the next two years.

While all the new models will feature variations on the two kidney grilles, Van Hooydonk said that while they would clearly be part of the “same family”, each model would have “very different features and characteristics”.

First look: BMW's Neue Klasse iX3 signals new era for the brand

BMW’s all new Neue Klasse iX3 revealed at the IAA Mobility Show in Munich, is the first of 40 new or updated models set to be released by 2027.

“You will remember that back in 2021, I promised we would lead BMW into a new era with the Neue Klasse. Today we stand here and we deliver on that promise,” said Oliver Zipse, the Chairman of the Board of Management of BMW AG, at the global reveal.

“Early this decade, we recognised an opportunity, a chance to set new benchmarks across all relevant technologies in the car. It was an opportunity that only comes once in a lifetime, a perfect BMW moment.

“The Neue Klasse is much more than just a new vehicle. It marks a completely new model generation, a massive leap that redefines the entire brand. The new BMW iX3 will be followed by more than 40 new or updated models from BMW by 2027, each carrying the Neue Klasse genes regardless of the drivetrain.”
