Can anyone tell me if the weight plates in the VA gyms are in pounds or in kgs. I have been using one of the FreeMotion machines for a weighted step up but I'm not sure if the plates on there is in lbs or kgs. Thanks again for the assistance.

each VA is different, some VA's have a mix between pounds and kg's on the machines
a bit retarded really

The VA at CapeGate has thier's in KG's.

I have not seen a gym where the machines were in lbs tbh. Not here in SA anyway.

Started squats and leg raises yesterday, yip I did it, got my foot in the door, my upper, outer, inner legs are hurting today.
Did not really move anything heavy on squats, did 4 sets of 50kg.
Leg raises only pushed 4 sets of 30kg.

I did shoulders and upper back on Wednesday so resting 50kg behind my neck dug in a bit, think I need to use a towel from now on.

Nothing grates me more than the guys who use ***** pads.... my SO doesn't even use them.

I always used to be put off by squats because it seemed like such a schlep, but I must say it is one of, if not the most, rewarding workouts. When you are done with it, you are done.

And I'm doing the same with some padding/cushioning. I'm not the most bulky of guys (hence my working out), so when I squat it gets very uncomfortable for me and can be quite painful at times.

I am not bulky either, even when I was 10kg less, I used zero padding. It just feels easier to balance the bar with heavier weights without the padding.

To the guys using the pads on squats...are you resting the bar on your necks or are you resting it on your traps? Your trapezius muscles are there as a nice cusion to take the load from the bar...

I assume you are doing high bar squats then and resting the bar on the neck...let it roll a little lower and rest on the traps.

Doing heavy squats 180kg+ if you just rest bar on the traps then you should be fine.

I had done shoulders and back the day before so entire girdle was sore , most likely why it hurt more than usual, I usually let it rest on my lower traps, i'd say just above scapula it seems to rest there nicely.
BUT I can feel the bar resting on bone, just doesn't seem clever.

Are you not complaining of back problems now :)

I was a bit wobbly towards the end, surprised at how quickly my legs tired, I have steps leading into the house and could feel it when I ascended.

I rest it on my traps, but as Hemps mentioned, I can still feel the weight pressing on bone, which I find discomforting. Maybe when I start adding mass and muscle it will change, but right now I just can't get comfortable without some kind of padding.

By my 4th set of reps I'm swearing at the weights as my legs are starting to shake and are on fire. :o

Are you able to go below parallel when squating?

Err... whats that got to do with ***** pads, my wife squats 60kg+ without them? I lift like you should, raw... some guys come kitted out as if they're about to play an American Footbal match.

Injuries are part of all sports ;) Using a ***** pad doesn't stop you from getting injured.

Yip, went below parallel.

What I mean is that I avoid things that clearly are not good for me, my body and common sense guide me.
My brother is a medical doctor and he has warned me before that it's not ideal to have any heavy weight resting on your spine at an angle, any pressure what so ever is no good.

Who knows who's right or not, I'll just listen to my body , I desperately want to do squats, it's a must I know.
I'll see by the end of the month when I start to increase the weight.
I was hurting before I started squatting and am a newb so still plenty to learn.

My knees also go past my toes as well, from the videos I have seen, this seems normal?

I wrap a hand towel around the bar when I squat, that does not mean my exercise is any less effective than yours. As long as their form and motion is correct it really does not matter what people do or do not wear/use.

I'm able to go just below parallel, which isn't ideal as there is still a lot of pressure on the knee and it isn't a full movement. But I'm hoping that with stretching and regular squatting my hammies will loosen up in the coming weeks.

Mine do too. I assume it is perfectly normal from the vids and pictures I've seen.

I didn't say it makes a difference to the effectiveness of the squat.

And your blanket statement of what people wear/use is wrong- it does make a difference.
