err.. yes - I did - considerably stronger than me, and still thinking the weight should be deadlifted off of him. Just about everyone who asks you for a spot seems to expect that - they get a bit of a surprise when I don't touch the bar until they're turning blue.

With regards to my wife spotting me, she has no problem doing so when I was benching 140kg - you do not need to be strong to spot someone - that defeats the purpose. (and I'm not a "light fit guy" - I'm 6.2", 110kg.

She only ever had a problem with dumbbells, but that solved by passing one at a time.

Each to their own, but as soon as I need a spotter that's required to make what I'm lifting more than maximum of 20kg lighter, I'm going to heavy.
+1000

If you are a serious lifter, you will know when you are going to heavy, in which case you are going down a road where you will hurt yourself without a beast partner. When you know what you are doing, and how far you can push yourself safely, your GF can spot you, she only needs to move that small feather weight you just just miss the strength for.

fully agree that the spotter should not be doing the work but when you are trying to push those last 2 reps and your left arms starts giving in it is nice to have a strong hand under your elbow for stability.

Good for you I guess. Except that a training partner is more than just a spotter.

Another reason I forgot to mention is security. If you are busy benching 140, and your wife is spotting you, what happens if lets say, you pop your elbow or your forearm gets hurt or you just drop the weight on your chest unexpectedly?

A training partner is more than a spotter? Ok. Woman can't be more than a spotter?

Probably the same thing that will happen if a 150kg spotter is spotting you, someone is going to get hurt, you or him.

If my spotter needs to put more than 2 fingers on the bar to spot the weight I'm benching then that means I am going too heavy. Unless of course I am specifically training negatives or beyond failure.

What? Of course women can be more than spotters, if their goals concerning building their bodies are the same as yours, then I don't see the problem. OP wants to put on mass. Now you tell me how many women want to get huge? As you said you are a 6"2 110kg guy with years of experience, why are you asking me these things? Surely you know that very few women want to put on raw mass & therefore it's very rare that if the boyfriend wants to put on size, the girlfriend will want the same thing.

Why is it so hard to understand that training with a proper training partner who is more or less on your level and has the same goals as you is a lot better than training with your gf? If I trained with my gf ( I don't have one, let's just pretend for now that I do ), will I get the same results as when I train with my beast of a partner? No!

Funny.

Say what you want and will about a GF not being a good training partner. If you don't have any training partner, a GF is still better than having no one at all. At least if the 2 of you get each other to the gym, that is a great start vs the guy staying at home with zero motivation.

I will argue that if you know what you want and you have the right drive you don't need a training partner.

I do a mental check before I walk into the weight room. I'm there to work. Not pussyfoot around.

Training alone gives me better focus anyway. Earphones in, music on. Besides I can better control my rest periods.

So if you're speaking about intensity...you can have that training with a partner, a gf (which is damn fun to do) or alone.

meh this is so trivial if you dont agree and think the guy is dumb let him be dumb

I don't think he is dumb. Our opinions differ.

I agree 100% , I never said a GF who doesn't have the same goals as you is a bad training partner per se, but as I said before, a training partner who is similar ( or even bigger ) than you in size and strength, who has the same goals as you, is much better.

You don't need one, but a good training partner will help you achieve your goals faster, or even break plateaus.

Trust me when I tell you, you will never ever achieve the same amount of intensity alone than with a partner who pushes you. Ask any pro, or even an amateur bodybuilder, they will tell you the same thing. Look at Dorian Yates for instance, when he used to be the undisputed Mr.O in the 90's. He trained in the "dungeon" with his training buddy, and oh boy was that intense. I haven't seen anybody train that hard since Arnie. Watch what his training partner had to say about their regime.

Been there, watched all those vids and I still respectfully disagree.

Nothing wrong with needing a proxy to get you fired up...I simply don't.

THe only way to work out with a gf doesnt involve any weights at all , just a sofa, shower or bed :D

Why do you need to have the same goals? If you need some sort of inspiration from a "large male training partner", or your hand held by a guy "your size" - that's your issue. I don't need to have some "beast of a partner" to inspire me to be better.

I know what I did last time, therefore I know what I need to beat, that's all the inspiration I need. I don't need mirrors or a training partner to get where I need, My mind is in the right space before I set foot in the gym.

Each to himself I guess.

100%.

The idea here is not to force others to do the same thing as you, but to give them ideas on what they can do for their own situation.
This whole conversation started with D3x looking for an idea on how to find motivation to go to the gym. I just gave an alternative to the training partner buddy, use a GF instead which work as a another way. It was never intended to be a better method, just an alternative, and I am sure that is what he was looking for.

Just like people have different goals, people also have different situations, and unfortunately not everyone is lucky enough to have a gym buddy, or a GF that likes to join in at the gym ect. For another guy, it will just be easier to have a home gym, I think I would fall into that class.

Anyways, its about ideas and alternatives sometimes, not what is the only way to go at something.

But that's what I did :( .

i've had a few training partners over the years, but i train alone now.. gym partners can be more admin and commitment than a girlfriend..
