Farron was very meh, and their alliance with the Tories soured them for a lot of people, as Dave mentions. Hopefully Cable can do better.

The problem is that because of FPTP people think they are wasting their vote by backing a party which definitely can't win. So they need to fix that problem as well. This is the only reason Labour did relatively well in the recent GE.

Yeah, FPTP is garbage. It's a fsckup in the US, too.

New Zealand has a much better system, with a mixture of electorate votes (with FPTP) and party votes (party lists).
 
Britain 'could remain under direct control of European court for years'

Britain could remain under the direct control of the European court of justice for years after Brexit, it has emerged, and still be forced to implement the court’s rulings on vexed issues such as immigration.

The expanding scale of the prime minister’s climbdown over her promise to “take back control of British law” was revealed as the government published its latest position paper on dispute resolution before the next round of Brexit talks.

While stressing that the range of options it contains are hypothetical, the government outlines only scenarios in which “direct” ECJ authority is eventually replaced by a new court or committee over which Europe maintains “indirect” control.

It has also become clear that the UK government is now open to preserving the direct authority of the ECJ throughout the interim transition period after March 2019 – during which it is expected to spend years negotiating a new trade agreement.

Quarter of Brexit voters say they were misled, poll finds
Remain would win if another referendum was held tomorrow, research shows

A quarter of Leave voters believe they were misled during the Brexit campaign, a poll has found.

According to a survey by Opinium, 26 per cent of all Brexit voters said they were misled by promises made during the campaign.

The poll also found that the UK voters would opt to remain in the EU if another referendum was held today.

One of the main arguments used by the Leave campaign was the false promise of an additional £350m a week for the NHS, which has since been proven not to be true.

In May, Jeremy Hunt admitted the government could not deliver on the Brexiteers' pledge.

When respondents were asked whether they believed the £350m pledge, a quarter of all voters said they did: 35 per cent of Leave voters and 16 per cent of voters who voted to Remain.

The poll found that more than a year after the vote, half of all respondents found the Leave campaign mostly or completely misleading with only 19 per cent describing it as truthful.

It also showed that if there was another referendum about whether or not the UK should leave the EU, 47 per cent of respondents said they would vote Remain, against 44 per cent who said they would vote to leave.

Five per cent of people responded that they did not know and three per cent said they would not vote.

Boris Johnson concedes UK will have to pay for Brexit

The UK will pay money to the EU as part of the Brexit process, Boris Johnson has conceded, having previously said the EU could “go whistle” over a reported bill of between €60bn and €100bn.

On Friday, the foreign secretary said he did not “recognise” that figure, but added: “We will certainly have to meet our obligations”.

“Some of the sums that I’ve seen seemed to be very high and, of course, we will meet our obligations,” he told BBC Radio 4’s Today programme. “We are law-abiding, bill-paying people. The UK has contributed hundreds of billions over the years.

Questioned about his comments last month, Johnson said: “I think I was being asked then about some very large sums of money, I think 100bn euros or pounds, that the EU commission suggested we were on the hook for. That’s not a figure I recognise.”

He declined to say what figure would be considered fair.

Theresa May under fire as student visa myth exposed

The Guardian said:
Theresa May’s determination to continue counting foreign students in the government’s immigration target left her increasingly isolated on Thursday night, after official figures revealed that fewer than 5,000 a year stay on after their visa expires.

A string of Conservative and opposition politicians called on the prime minister to end the focus on overseas students as it appeared the government had been drastically overestimating the risk that they remain in Britain illegally.

New data, published by the Office for National Statistics and based on recently created exit checks at Britain’s borders, showed just 4,600 overstayed their visa last year. Estimates for previous years had been close to 100,000.

The Liberal Democrat leader, Vince Cable, called on the prime minister to apologise for the Home Office crackdown on foreign students. Cable, who served in David Cameron’s cabinet alongside May, said: “We spent five years trying to persuade the Home Office that the figures they were using as evidence were bogus, but they persisted nonetheless on the basis of these phoney numbers.

“The consequences were very serious. I would hope they would not just apologise to the individual students, many of whom have paid large fees and even found themselves deported in some cases, but simply acknowledge that the figures are grossly distorted and wrong.”

Anyway...noticed there are huge apt blocks going up towards the east of canary wharf so someone out there still has a hell of a lot of confidence in London finance.

Anyway...noticed there are huge apt blocks going up towards the east of canary wharf so someone out there still has a hell of a lot of confidence in London finance.

Lots of construction still ongoing all over, either they aren't worried or haven't realised Brexit is underway ;)

Yeah would be curious about the timing of when they started it. Were they already committed to it when the vote went down? That's a hella lot apt space they're building & it's obvious targeted straight at fin. professionals.
 
Looks like UK Labour have taken notice of the change in opinion about Brexit in the country.

Who would have thought Corbyn had a chance before the retarded Tories imploded quite so badly...

Labour makes dramatic shift on Brexit and single market

Labour is to announce a dramatic policy shift by backing continued membership of the EU single market beyond March 2019, when Britain leaves the EU, establishing a clear dividing line with the Tories on Brexit for the first time.

In a move that positions it decisively as the party of “soft Brexit”, Labour will support full participation in the single market and customs union during a lengthy “transitional period” that it believes could last between two and four years after the day of departure, it is to announce on Sunday.

This will mean that under a Labour government the UK would continue to abide by the EU’s free movement rules, accept the jurisdiction of the European court of justice on trade and economic issues, and pay into the EU budget for a period of years after Brexit, in the hope of lessening the shock of leaving to the UK economy.

In a further move that will delight many pro-EU Labour backers, Jeremy Corbyn’s party will also leave open the option of the UK remaining a member of the customs union and single market for good, beyond the end of the transitional period.

Being a prominent leave campaigner, why has he not been leading this with all the plans and strategies he must have had in place for being a pro-leave campaigner?

This is bunk though, the majority of the press (particularly the gutter press) has been pro-Brexit. The bottom line is the leave campaign told just enough lies to swing it their way, and now the UK is the basket case of Europe, and things are only going to get worse.
