It is exactly the other way around, have you not paid attention to how the EU is bending over backwards to offer the UK chances to stay? They've gotten the court to state outright that the UK can unilaterally revoke article 50, they called a committee to essentially agree to let the UK extend article 50 should they wish.
They simply would not have done that if they were not more scared of a hard brexit than the UK is, it is a damn pity the UK doesn't have competent negotiators to spot that obvious truth, but that doesn't change the fact that the UK very much has leverage, their representatives are just too stupid and/or unwilling to use it properly.
