The Brexit Thread

Both sides can spin the numbers to suit themselves, the bottom line remains the same.

The people had a vote, leave won, now get on with it.

Best of three is not an option.

That's just the thing, though - it's not at all clear what 'leaving' meant. Many of the most prominent Brexiteers promised hard Brexit isn't on the cards - they were insistent soft Brexit is what they were promising. Some of the others, like Farage, want a hard Brexit.

There's no mandate for leaving from the latest EU election, either.

In such a situation, how is it inappropriate to present the deal that was negotiated for leaving to the electorate?

I’ve seen a YouTube video where all the prominent Brexit leaders advocated a soft Brexit. Even Farage.

Farage said something like “would it be so bad to have a deal like Norway”.

He also said he'd like to have a 2nd referendum if the result were close. ;)

I think Farage is one of those slimy politicians that just says whatever he thinks is the best sound bite for the day.

Quite right, Norway isn't forced to accept completely free movement or told what to do on their borders with other nations fyi

EU citizens who wish to reside in Norway actually have to register and apply. EU courts have no jurisdiction over Norway etc etc etc

Norway, Iceland, Sweden and Switzerland for that matter are all perfectly healthy examples that you can have trade agreements and significant trade with the EU without being bound like the UK is. Norway for example does not allow free movement of certain goods that are subsidized by the EU as it represents unfair competition.

The "deal" the bremoaners have "negotiated" is significantly worse than what any of those countries already have in place for decades.

Nice one Boris! The NHS £350 million lie may come back to bite him after all.

Lol. The politicisation of the judicial system is hilarious. Why is Blair not in the dock for far more egregious lies surrounding the Iraq War or Gordon Brown famously claiming he had ended "boom or bust"?

Such convenient timing when there is a leadership race underway although I don't think there will be any effect as most people won't know about it or rightly prioritise other stuff.

Norway is in the single market (but not customs union); restrictions on freedom of movement are about the same as those that the UK could have applied but chose not to.

Norway deal without customs union doesn't fix the Irish border issue, nor coping with the amount of traffic and goods trade between the UK and the mainland.

Yes there is a Twitter account based on the EFTA4UK model: https://mobile.twitter.com/EFTA4UK?ref_src=twsrc^google|twcamp^serp|twgr^author

Honestly I haven't read all the stuff about EFTA, but I am amazed it hasn't been at all pursued by Traitor May and funnily enough the UK was a founding member of EFTA.

Oh I want Boris to be PM, so he can fail and realise just how impossible his unicorn dream is. It may go a long way to ending this mess.

Edit - To add - I agree on Blair etc. I recall how the Sun and other newspapers happily regurgitated those lies. I remember climbing onto a tube at King's Cross and seeing the headline on The Sun's front page, saying Iraq can attack the UK in 14 minutes (or something astronomically ridculous like that).

Edit 2 - I actually found the headline - It was - The Brits 45 minutes from Doom

no, EUCU = unmitigated freedom of movement, that is the #1 issue
EFTA = at least some actual control over movement

The "emergency brake" is the only mechanism for EEA countries to limit immigration, but it has never been used. Is this what you are referring to?

It's amazing that some Brexiters are saying "no deal" is what everyone voted for, but even in this thread we have numerous interpretations (by self proclaimed Brexiters) of what it should mean. Surely a referendum on the preferred type of Brexit should be held? Completely take remain off the table.

The referendum question will be: Should the United Kingdom remain a member of the European Union or leave the European Union?

1) Remain a member of the European Union

2) Leave the European Union

Leave won, so the UK must just leave the European Union.

Seems they are trying to leave but let some parts stay, that's not ' leave '.

What a monumental mess.
