The lengths you guys would go to :D
He probably dropped the most ignorant post on the NI situation. Just get over their insecurities ... LOL

So I tried to draw him a picture of what it would feel like for someone in NI being told to get over their insecurities and join the other side.

Would it feel better if we tell them "give back the land you were gifted by the pope in the 1500's"?

I mean it's not like Northern Ireland's physical territory was always Britain's ...

To you yes. But to them no.

An ANC supporter will say your insecurity over the ANC is also not rational.

It is easy just to say get over it mate and get along ...

Yes, it is not easy to get over insecurities. Does that mean we must just accept it, and not highlight that said insecurities is irrational?

Yes, they have been doing this for decades. It will take time, but they cannot just do it now by the 31st of October 2019 and say there you go boys, get along now.

Deeper issues at play, which cannot be solved by telling them to get over it in 3 months time.

Nobody said they must do it in 3 months. The hard border will take time.

To you it's irrational, to them it's fundamental. But then I guess the situation is that they have to live there and you have no idea what you are talking about.

Or maybe you can explain why it is irrational for a British Protestant to want to remain part of the UK with the Queen as the head of your religion, rather than dissolve your country and join another one with different laws, religious leanings and traditions simply because it's your neighbour? I assume you are aware that the Reformation and rejecting the Popes supremacy have some significance to Protestants?

I do understand the history and why they have these insecurities. I still don't see why it is a bad thing to address these insecurities.

The most ridiculous BS ever. Their religious tribalism is exactly the same as the ANCs tribal tribalism. Saying it isn't rational after the 1800's is exactly right. They should get over it.

It’s not. It’s just that the insecurities are so deep rooted that they are probably the reason for their being. It’s going to take a few more decades yet.

I’d say it was more of an Israel/Palestine situation than an ANC. Two tribes religiously opposed and both believing they are the rightful occupants of the land they inhabit.

It seems we agree that they must get over their insecurities.

It will diffenitly help to speed up the process if the politicians stop using these insecurities to gain votes.
