Points-based immigration system 'to be brought in by end of 2020'

A points-based immigration system could be in place two years earlier than originally planned, according to reports.

Home Secretary Priti Patel is reportedly set to tell her cabinet colleagues that Britain should implement an Australian-style system before the end of the year - to coincide with the end of Britain's transition period with the EU.

A government source told the Daily Express: "We need to deliver change and businesses need to be prepared for uncontrolled migration of low-skilled workers to end this year.
"There is a clear drive for talented and skilled workers from around the world to come to the UK, but we also need to see a reduction in the number of unskilled workers entering the UK and that's why this will be coming to an end."
The reports come as Boris Johnson called for the UK to be the "investment partner of choice" for Africa and said his government would put "people before passports".

He said: "Change is coming and our system is becoming fairer and more equal between all our global friends and partners, treating people the same, wherever they come from.
"By putting people before passports, we will be able to attract the best talent from around the world, wherever they may be.

I agree with the amendment regarding an ID document. I have one, as does anyone other non EU citizen currently residing in the UK. While it may no longer be stuck in passports, the BRP displays vital information to anyone who needs to see it, i.e. right of abode and right to work and/or right to public funds. Also, at £20 a pop, the HO could make a bit of change out of it.

I'm not convinced by the idea of automatically giving every EU citizen currently in the UK ILR, though. It's dangerous to not have them all properly screened first. And a slap in the face to the over 2 million who have already formally applied.

Members of the House of Lords seem to be on a collision course with the Government after Boris Johnson's Brexit deal suffered its fifth defeat in the upper chamber.

In the latest reverses today, the Government was heavily defeated as peers backed a move to ensure the rights of unaccompanied child refugees to be reunited with their families in the UK post-Brexit.


Voting was 300 to 220, majority 80, in a fourth defeat for the Prime Minister in just 24 hours.

Later, the Government suffered a fifth as peers narrowly backed a move underlining the commitment to the so-called Sewel Convention, which states that the UK Parliament "will not normally" legislate for devolved matters without the consent of the devolved legislature affected.

BORIS JOHNSON’s Brexit deal is expected to pass its final parliamentary hurdle today, paving the way for Britain to finally leave the EU.

The Withdrawal Agreement Bill - the legislationn eeded to make Brexit happen on January 31 - is set to be passed by MPs in the House of Commons.

They are expected to vote to remove changes made by peers as the draft law enters the “ping pong” process which will see it go back and forth between the Commons and the House of Lords until both houses can agree to what is in it.

MPs have overwhelmingly rejected all the changes made by peers to the government's Brexit bill and sent the legislation back to the House of Lords.

The Commons overturned five amendments passed by the Lords, including one on unaccompanied refugee children being allowed to join relatives in the UK.

Ministers say they back the principle of the Dubs amendment but the Brexit bill is not the right vehicle for it.
